26、Tips for Upcoming Senior Two
The upperclassmen often describe Senior Two in No.7 High as a year with “much more homework, more frequent exams and more fierce competitions”. 【1】
●Manage your time carefully and make the most of it.
Try to study not only hard but efficiently. Make a to-do-list for your time after school. Don’t just spend quite a long time on only one subject, especially a science subject. 【2】 Remember to take breaks when you feel exhausted.
●Treat competition in class in a right way.
Competition cannot be avoided, but everyone wants to study and live in a friendly environment. Don’t treat your classmates as potential enemies.【3】By helping others solve problems, you inspire others, consolidate your own knowledge and gain lasting friendship.
●【4】
Don’t let your former rankings limit you. What really matters is how you treat exams and rankings. Forget the class or grade rankings, but compete with yourself. In a while, you will see yourself climbing in scores and rankings.
All in all, the coming new school year is sure to be full of challenges. Too much worry only adds to your difficulties in your development. 【5】 Wish you the best of luck in the new academic year in No.7 High!
A.Treat yourself as the rival.
B.Have a right attitude towards your rankings.
C.However, rearrange your time table is of great importance.
D.Instead, divide the hours into small periods for different subjects.
E.So when they turn to you for help, just share your wisdom generously.
F.If you keep my advice in mind, you will achieve a lot and lead a happy life.
G.When you prepare for the upcoming challenges, some advice from me may be helpful.
27、Among rich countries, people in the United States work the longest hours. They work much longer than in Europe. This difference is quite surprising because productivity per hour worked is the same in the United States as it is in France, Spain and Germany, and it is growing at a similar speed.
In most countries and at most times in history, as people have become richer they have chosen to work less. In other words they have decided to “spend” a part of their extra income on a fuller personal life. Over the last fifty years Europeans have continued this pattern, and hours of work have fallen sharply. But not in the United States. We do not fully know why this is. One reason may be greatly lower taxes in America, which increase the rewards to work. Another may be more satisfying work, or less satisfying personal lives.
Longer hours do of course increase the GDP (国内生产总值). So the United States has produced more per worker than, say, France. The United States also has more of its people at work, while in France many more mothers and older workers have decided to stay at home. The overall result is that American GDP per head is 40% higher than in France, even though productivity per hour worked is the same.
It is not clear which of the two situations is better. As we have seen, work has to be compared with other values like family life, which often get lost in interest. It is too early to explain the different trends(趋势)in happiness over time in different countries. But it is a disappointing idea that in the United States happiness has made no progress since 1975, while it has risen in Europe. Could this have anything to do with trends in the work-life balance?
【1】From the text we know that the author___________.
A.believes that longer working hours is better
B.prefers shorter working hours to longer ones
C.says nothing certain about which pattern is better
D.thinks neither of the patterns is good
【2】Which of the following countries has more of its people at work?
A.Spain.
B.France.
C.Germany.
D.America.
【3】In the last paragraph, the underlined word “which” refers to ______.
A.family life
B.situations
C.other values
D.trends
【4】What message can we get from the text?
A.The GDP of Europe is higher than that of America.
B.Two possible reasons are given for working longer hours in the US.
C.People all over the world choose to work less when they are richer.
D.Americans are happier than Europeans.
【5】Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Americans and Europeans
B.Staying at Home
C.Work and Productivity
D.Work and Happiness
28、How to Quiet the Complainer
You may want to know why people complain. In fact, even the kindest, most considerate people complain. And complaining doesn’t always have a negative impact. 【1】. However, the problems start when complaining becomes a frequent action. So, how to quiet a complaining considering your health and his?
Change the subject.
Some complainers will switch the topic if you change the conversation in a direction that interests them. If your neighbor is complaining about the phone company, tell her about an unexpected call you received from an old friend. 【2】.
Summarize the complaint.
If your complainer keeps repeating himself, ask something like, “Can I tell you that I’ve heard and gotten it?” Using “I” statements (“I’ve heard ...”) rather than “you” statements (“You keep repeating yourself”) shows that you’re interested rather than trying to shut the person down.
【3】.
When a frequent complainer tells you about her latest problem, ask nicely what she’s done to improve it. This isn’t the usual direction a grievance-laden conversation takes, and it may help to abruptly end a rant.
Be honest.
【4】, tell the complainer that you must cut the conversation short. You can simply be honest, saying you need to move on so the conversation doesn’t bring you down—especially if it’s someone who’s complained to you many times before.
Have a heart-to-heart.
If someone very close to you, like your partner or best friend stresses you out with loads of pessimism. 【5】. Otherwise, if you hide your feelings and continue listening to repeated complaints, you may start avoiding the person.
A.Focus on the effect.
B.Challenge the person to act.
C.When you have things to do
D.Avoid saying the word complaining.
E.It’s important to talk about the problem.
F.Sometimes a complaint changes an unfavorable situation into a more desirable one.
G.If your coworker is saying bad words about your boss, ask whether he met the new employee.
29、 When to go:The Magic Kingdom, which was opened in 1971,was the first theme park at Walt Disney World. All Disney World theme parks are opened 365 days a year, although opening and closing time for each park changes from day to day. If you plan to make a trip to the Magic Kingdom without kids, try to visit on a school day to avoid the largest crowds. If you need to visit during a school vacation, try at least to avoid the week between Christmas and New Year's Day and the Fourth of July.

Before you go: Buy your Walt Disney World tickets online at Disney World's website. For advice on picking the right ticket, see our guide to Disney World tickets.
You will also need to call in advance to make lunch or dinner reservations. Disney accepts reservations up to 180 days in advance, but you need to contact 1407WDWDINE.
When you get there: Plan to arrive at the Magic Kingdom's front gate before the park opens in the morning. Keep in mind that to reach the Magic Kingdom, you must park at Disney World's Transportation and Ticket Centre parking lot, ride a tram(有轨电车) to the TTC,then take a ferry boat across the Seven Seas Lagoon to the Magic Kingdom. It makes a fantastic approach, but takes extra time. Give yourself an extra hour in the summer and half an hour during the school year.

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. When Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!
After planning the trip, we began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house far away in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester (护林人) worked.
After a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, Steve started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to a place near the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.
