  • 25、Last fall a beaver(海狸) moved into the small stream(小溪;溪流) beside our house. He began taking down small trees right away, and in a couple of weeks our stream turned into a pond(水塘). Every day, he added more to his dam(水坝) and to his house. We're sure you've all heard the saying, “as busy as a beaver”. Now, we understand this saying as we saw the work that this beaver did over a very short period(时期) of time.

We thought that would be the last of the beaver's busy activity as winter came. To our amazement, however, he started chewing(咀嚼) on a very large tree. The tree was over 18 metres tall and around 1.5 metres in diameter(直径). We were amazed at the challenge(挑战) this beaver was trying. All winter, he chewed and chewed. He had setbacks(挫折) as we faced major winter storms and ice cold weather. But sure enough, when the weather allowed, he would come back and chew a bit more.

The beaver's first goal(目标) was to survive(生存)—to build home for the winter. Working every day with that goal in mind, he successfully achieved that goal. But the large tree he started chewing on last fall was a future goal—he wanted the large tree to provide new food and branches(树枝) for the coming spring. Even with the setbacks he faced over the winter, he never gave up until he reached it.

Our beaver's experience reminds us that we need to set goals for tomorrow. Sometimes just surviving seems to take up all of our time. But, if you do just a little bit when time allows and stick to your future goal, you will achieve it.

When faced with setbacks, have your goal in heart and don't let the setbacks stop you. Keep chewing like the beaver, and you will achieve(实现;获得) your goal in the end.

1What is the purpose of the beaver's chewing on the large tree?

    A. To provide more food for the winter because of the snow.

    B. To add more branches to his dam and his house.

    C. To prepare new food and branches for the coming spring.

    D. To keep working every day with a goal in mind.

2Here is a paragraph()“When spring arrived, we went down to see the beaver's progress. The tree was about to fall. Our beaver had almost completely chewed around and through the whole tree.” According to the passage, it should be put ________.

    A. between Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2

    B. between Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3

    C. between Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4

    D. between Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5

3The best title of this passage might be________.

    A. Keep Chewing   B. Be Like the Beaver

    C. As Busy as a Beaver   D. Set Proper Goals

    4The beaver's experience reminds us that ________.

    A. we need to set goals for tomorrow

    B. we have to get up early in the morning

    C. everybody has a bright tomorrow

    D. everybody will achieve his goal

    5When faced with setbacks, ________.

    A. have your goal in heart

    B. don't let the setbacks stop you

    C. give up

    D. both A and B

As he was working, a couple of boys stopped by to watch. “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “I want to dig a deep hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that it was impossible to do it. Then they left.

The little boy kept on digging and digging. Suddenly, a few small colorful stones caught his eyes. He collected them and put them into a glass jar (罐) patiently. Humming (哼唱) a song, he went on digging. The jar was full soon. Then he talked to himself calmly and proudly, “Maybe I can’t finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I have found in the process (过程) of digging!”

The boy’s goal (目标) was too difficult, but it did cause him to go on, in other words, to cause us to keep working!

Not every goal will be achieved. Not every job will end up with a success. Not every dream will come true. But when you can’t achieve your goal, maybe you can say, “Yes, but look what I’ve found along the way! There are so many wonderful things that have come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived. • 27、Xiao Li, a college student born after 1995, used to wash her hair every two days. But as the weather gets colder, she has become lazier. She has bought a mist spray(免洗喷雾), which allows her to wash her hair less often. “I would like to have a product that could save me the trouble of putting on make-up,” she told Orient Today, a newspaper office of Henan Television.

She is not the only young Chinese who spends money because she’s “lazy”. According to a report of December by Taobao on China’s “lazy economy(经济)”, Chinese people spent 16 billion yuan on products and services online in 2018. The post-1995 generation was the “laziest” as its consumption(消费)increased by 82 percent, compared with that in 2017.

The “lazy economy” refers to a new type of consumption which helps to save time and effort.

According to the report, many people of the post-1995 buy high-tech electronic products such as floor sweeping robots and automatic window cleaners, which save the trouble of doing housework. Meanwhile, take-out food delivery(传递)services are also popular among people born after 1995.

Young people are willing to spend money on such products because they want to enjoy the valuable spare time after a busy day at work or school, reported Global Times. Because they need to focus on their studies or jobs, these so-called lazy people want to use their own time better.

For example,Wei Duo, a 21-year-old college student, is an active user of take-out food delivery services. “I once had a birthday cake sent to my friend who lives far from my home. It cost me 50 yuan but it saved me almost half a day that would have been needed to do it myself. My friend was also happy because she got to eat the cake in no time,” Wei told the Global Times.

While the “lazy economy” might be convenient for young people, it might also create problems.

People buy food or other things without leaving home. As a result, they stay at home all day long, playing on computers and smart-phones. According to Jinan Daily, this situation could develop problems of communicating with others.

“The lazy economy is a choice of lifestyle. The saved time should be used to do valuable things.” commented(评论)Orient Today.
