21、“A good book might clarify something you knew little about, transform your world view, or move you in ways you didn’t think possible. The Soul of an Octopus(章鱼)delivers on all three, ”the magazine New Scientist commented.
After writing about birds, pigs and tigers, US naturalist Sy Montgomery decided to choose these many-footed animals as the subject of her latest book, The Soul of an Octopus: a surprising exploration into the wonder of consciousness.
“Here is animal with poisonous liquid like a snake,a beak(喙)like a parrot, and ink like an old-fashioned pen. It can weigh as much as a man and extend as long as a car, yet it can pour its baggy; boneless body through an opening the size of all orange. It can change color and shape. It has a tongue covered with teeth. It can taste with its skin.” Montgomery explained to the National Geographic on why octopuses inspired her.
What Montgomery is able to show in The Soul of an Octopus is that octopuses are creatures who exhibit personality, intelligence and emotion, despite having nervous systems completely different from our own. She uses different experiments to show that they possess consciousness as well as individual personalities. For example, based on her research, she finds out that Octavia, an octopus caught in the wild, is friendly and good at multi-tasking. And Kali, another octopus, who has been living at the New England Aquarium, is playful and loves exploring.
Montgomery is a good storyteller. Through her study of, and communication with, these extraordinary creatures she shares what she learns from both science and her experiences. Her skillful writing presents facts together with personal description, which makes the book very informative but easy to read.

23、 Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself on Chinese soil, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he’d seen before.
And how great must it have been to listen to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia? His brain must have been packed with everything he’d seen and heard, leading to the founding of the Silk Road.
Some people have traveled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. They perhaps know what to expect before they travel. That’s why the best travel is when it’s for the first time. Imagine a person who has always wanted to travel to the United States. Of course, they’ve probably seen the Statue of Liberty a thousand times on TV, and the White House, and all the other famous sights. But none of that would compare to the thrill of looking out of the cabin window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into view.
Although travel is often just for recreation, it’s also educational. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are.
We’re learning every day: new words in a new language, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not the classroom. One of the lessons we learn is undoubtedly a moral one. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. The British politician Benjamin Disraeli summed this up well when he said, “Travel teaches toleration.”
【1】The writer uses Marco Polo and Zhang Qian as examples to ________.
A.explain how the Silk Road was founded
B.present travel as an amazing experience
C.show how the way people travel has changed
D.describe important cultural exchanges in history
【2】The underlined word in paragraph 4 probably means ________.
A.learning B.knowledge
C.fun D.risk
【3】According to the last two paragraphs, the writer believes that ________.
A.traveling should be included in formal education
B.traveling improves people’s confidence in their lifestyle
C.a foreign journey may raise people’s cultural understanding
D.there is more to learn from adventures than being in classrooms
24、When I became a budget traveler, and I discovered some of the cheapest ways to travel around the world. Don’t let money problems stop you from traveling. Here are a few ways to travel cheap that can help you see the world on a budget.
1. Pay with points
You’re smart enough to know money doesn’t grow on trees, but earning credit card points and miles may have you thinking otherwise.
Figure out how much money you regularly spend, and consider making those purchases on a travel card, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, so that you have the potential to be rewarded with points and miles every time you swipe. You can redeem (兑换) these rewards for airfare, hotels and other qualifying expenses.
2. Want to score even cheaper flights?
You may want to subscribe to Scott’s Cheap Flights. This email newsletter alerts budget travelers when airlines hold sales or mistakenly lower their prices. In the past, Scott’s Cheap Rights has notified subscribers about amazing deals like a $260 flight from New York to Paris and a flight from San Francisco to Bali for $ 364.
TheFlightDeal.com and SecretFlying.com are two more sites that may be able to help you find cheap flights, according to Nico Atienza, a front desk agent at the Travel Hacking Cartel.
3. Timing is everything
It’s typically easier to find cheap flights when your travel schedule is flexible.
Often, you’ll find the best deals when you travel in the middle of the week or take a red-eye flight overnight. If you’re prepared to face less-than-idyllic weather, you could save even more money on airfare and hotels by traveling during off-peak seasons.
“The most important thing is to be flexible on timing”, says Atienza. “The tighter your time frame, the less chance you’re going to get a cheap fare”.
It can also help to book early.
4. When you travel together, you can split the costs with your friends and family
There’s something to be said about solo travel.
But if you’re on a budget, you can split the costs of hotels and rental cars when you travel with a small group of friends or family. So don’t be shy about squeezing into a small motel room or renting an entire home on Airbnb if it’s less expensive per person.
“The optimal party size tends to work out to be four people,” says Atienza.
Any more than that and the hotel might charge you for another room.
You should also be able to fit about four people in your rental car, depending on the type of car you rent.
【1】What is learned from the passage?
A.The airfare from San Francisco to Bali is only $ 364.
B.You may find cheap flights from TheFlightDeal. com and SecretFlying. com.
C.The tighter your time frame, the more chance you’re going to get a cheap fare.
D.Atienza believes that the optimal party size tends to work out to be three people.
【2】According to this article, which of the following is NOT a way to get cheap airline tickets?
A.Redeem Points for Airline Tickets.
B.Notice the airlines’ price reduction and discount emails.
C.Choose off-season travel times.
D.Split the costs with your friends and family.
