二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、“Do you know what love is?” It replies, “As an AI language model, I do not have personal experiences or emotions, so I do not know what love is in the way that humans do. However, in general, love can be described as a strong feeling of affection, care, and attachment towards someone or something. It can take many forms, such as romantic love, familial love, or platonic love, and is often associated with feelings of happiness, fulfillment, and connection.”

You see, ChatGPT is a new artificial intelligence (AI) technology that enables natural language conversations between humans and machines, which is, quite simply, the best and most special artificial intelligence chatbot ever released to the general public. It was built by Open AI, the San Francisco A. I. company that is also responsible for tools like GPT-3 and DALL-E 2, the breakthrough image generator that came out this year.

“Tools such as ChatGPT presents a real risk of skilled and semi-skilled workers losing their jobs. For example, chatbots can be developed to train employees in an organization, resulting in the redundancy of human trainers.” “Certain jobs in sectors such as journalism, higher education, graphic and software design-these are at risk of being replaced by AI, ” said Chinmay Hegde, a computer science and electrical engineering associate professor at New York University, who calls ChatGPT in its current state “very, very good, but not perfect. “

Thus, ChatGPT isn’t perfect, by any means. Especially the way it generates responses makes it tend to give wrong answers, even on seemingly simple math problems. There are also plenty of things ChatGPT won’t do, as a matter of principle.

Problems do not stop. New York City’s Department of Education announced a ban on the wildly popular chatbot ChatGPT-which some have warned could inspire more student cheating-from its schools’ devices and networks. In order to find out what the public thinks about using ChatGPT in schools, online course provider Study. com surveyed more than 100 educators and more than 1, 000 students over the age of 18.

【1】How does the author start this text?

A.By listing astonishing figures about ChatGPT.

B.By providing a conversation between him and ChatGPT.

C.By showing the effect of ChatGPT on people’s daily life.

D.By explaining the way ChatGPT works.

【2】Why is ChatGPT different, from the previous chat robots?

A.It has more advanced and sophisticated functions.

B.It can contribute to more natural conversations.

C.It enables people to solve more difficult questions.

D.It can bring people comfort and inspirations.

【3】What will probably be written following the last paragraph?

    A.The advantages of ChatGPT.

    B.The potential users of ChatGPT.

C.The results of a survey on ChatGPT.

D.The feedback from the users on ChatGPT.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.ChatGPT Inspires and Helps the Whole World.

    B.The Positive Advent of ChatGPT.

C.Advanced Chatbot ChatGPT Comes with Its Own Limits.

D.ChatGPT and Its Negative and Gloomy Future.

  • 22、Helen Keller once wrote, “The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves.” 【1】 The UN has set December 5 as International Volunteers Day to give recognition to these people.

Nineteen-year-old Andrew Makhoul was a communications major at the University of Pennsylvania. It was coming up to spring break, but unlike his classmates, Makhoul wasn’t planning on spending the break relaxing. 【2】

He traveled to Guatemala. He went to an orphanage in one of the most violent and poor parts of Guatemala City. It depends upon volunteers to stay open. Although he didn’t speak much Spanish, he found communication wasn’t a problem: 【3】 And what he gave out, he got back: “You could see love when you looked in their eyes.”

Makhoul’s first time as a volunteer only lasted a week, but by the end of that week, he knew he’d be back in the future.

【4】 The UN highlighted the case of Palestinian women who are survivors of breast cancer. As part of the UN’s Aid and Hope Programme for Patient Care, the women have been volunteering their time to create low-cost breast prosthetics (假体) to be distributed to women for free, among whom Shahd El-Swerki is a brilliant example. 【5】 By the end of her time there, she admired these women who are “not only survivors but also volunteers”.

About 2,400 years ago, Greek philosopher Aristotle said, “The essence of life is to serve others and do good.” Volunteers all around the world are making these words come true, each and every day.

    A.“You communicated with love.”

B.She volunteered in curing thousands of women.

C.She worked with the women as part of the programme.

D.Unexpectedly, volunteers benefit from their experiences.

E.Sometimes, volunteers themselves live with huge challenges.

F.He decided to spend his time doing something useful for people.

G.These words certainly prove true for the millions of volunteers all over the world.

  • 23、Life in lockdown has been hard on people for many reasons, but it has presented unique challenges to those who are used to wandering far from home. For professional adventurers like Alastair Humphreys, who has biked around the world and walked across southern India, the prospect of staying close to home is particularly frightening.

Humphreys’ concept of the “microadventure” has been covered before on Treehugger, so he’s no stranger to finding adventure in the seemingly boring places of home. But to create an ongoing sense of discovery throughout the long months of lockdown at his home in southeastern England, Humphreys had to come up with another plan. He designed a project called “A Single Map Is Enough”. For this, Humphreys ordered a big paper map of his region that measured 20 kilometers along either side. He aimed to explore this map, one small area at a time, for a year.

This project is a pleasant reminder of just how much there is to see around us — if we choose to notice it. There’s nothing wrong with staying close to home; it can offer far more opportunities for discovery than we may realize. Humphreys told Treehugger, “At the start of the project, I feared a year on one map. I was sure it would be boring. By the end of the year, I was astonished by how little of my map I had seen, and how much there was still to explore.”

“A Single Map Is Enough” will be coming out in book form, allowing us readers to travel through Humphreys’ stories and photos. But this time, his adventure won’t be nearly as difficult to replicate as his earlier ones. We can all get a local map, divide it into squares, and start getting to know our backyards better than ever. And like him, we’ll probably be amazed at what we discover.

【1】What does Humphreys’ new project focus on?

A.Making a big map of his region.

B.Exploring areas near his home for a year.

C.Encouraging people to take up a new hobby.

D.Meeting like-minded people around his home.

【2】How did Humphreys feel at the beginning of his project?

    A.Confused.

    B.Disappointed.

    C.Anxious.

    D.Amazed.

【3】What does the underlined word “replicate” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Predict.

    B.Record.

    C.Discover.

    D.Copy.

【4】What would be the best title for this text?

    A.Developing our map reading habits

B.Limiting our adventures to one map

C.Reading is the new way of travelling

D.Lockdown has brought more rewards than challenges

  • 24、The largest land animal remaining on the earth, the African elephant is of much importance to African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a giant plant-eater, it significantly shapes the forest-and-savanna (大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore deciding the conditions of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.

It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it both a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, as well as pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in not only deep tropical forests but also the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth, which attract a variety of other plant-eaters.

Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants create open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large-hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small-sized plant-eaters to obtain their food as well.

Scientists are worried now that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant dies out, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

    A. Disappearance of African elephants.

    B. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.

    C. The effect of African elephants' search for food.

    D. The eating habit of African elephants.

【2The African elephant influences the ecosystem in the following ways except that .

    A. it creates open areas in deep tropical forests as well as woodlands

    B. it pulls off the branches and leaves, shutting out the sunshine

    C. its eating habit can be made use of by large-hoofed and small-sized animals

    D. it encourages some kinds of plants growing in an indirect way

【3According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?

    A. Numerous grown plants are the favorites of plant-eaters.

    B. The extinction of the African elephant has nothing to do with the ecosystem.

    C. Quantities of plants are consumed by African elephants, including branches and underbushes.

    D. The forest floor in rain forests is scarcely dotted with new shoots.

【4The passage is developed mainly by .

    A. presenting the changes in time order

    B. making comparisons and giving examples

    C. classifying similarities and differences

    D. showing the effect and then explaining the reasons
