21、Give a little sunshine!
The Council on Aging (COA) runs a telephone friendship project called the Sunshine Call Program, matching over-60s with a friendly volunteer for a daily chat over the phone. The aim is simple-to help ease the loneliness and repair social networks.
Sheila, 77, a retired teacher, lived alone. She has been receiving calls from Rianne, a volunteer, for over two months. “Talking to Rianne is something I really look forward to—a breath of fresh air. We talk about everything—theatre, her work, books we’ve read…Listening to someone else’s life enriches you and gives you something positive to focus on.” “At the beginning, I had no expectation of how the phone calls would go, but it’s wonderful that it’s led to a genuine friendship. Rianne helps me a lot …” |
Are you ready to add a little sunshine to a senior’s life?
The Sunshine Call Program initially links a volunteer with an isolated (独居的) senior for a daily call. When comfortable, the volunteer introduces a second senior to the call. Then another, until there are four seniors to one volunteer on what is essentially a conference call. Without having to leave the house, you will help the seniors meet and make new friends. They will then exchange phone numbers to chat on their own and reduce their isolation.
What are the volunteer qualifications?
Volunteers must have access to the Internet and be willing to be trained on the use of a chat app. COA will provide all supplies required to make the calls. Besides, volunteers must agree to participate in monthly meetings with other volunteers and guest speakers. All volunteers must be willing to provide a recent Criminal Record Check, the cost of which will be borne by COA. And the most important volunteer qualification is a sense of caring and a desire to help seniors in the community!
If you wish to volunteer with our Sunshine Call program, never hesitate! Just CLICK HERE to fill out the application form.

22、In some snow-covered villages in Altay district of Xinjiang, it’s common in winter to see local herdsmen (牧民) with planks attached to their feet, climb the snowy slopes without any other form of assistance. The pair of planks are wrapped with horsehide (马皮), which serves a double purpose. Remarkably, the horsehide not only can provide friction to prevent skiers from slipping while going up the hills, but also helps them slide more smoothly down the hills.
According to rock carvings uncovered in the area by archaeologists, such skis have served for around 12, 000 years as a means of transportation for the snowfield people of Altay, especially those who had to travel a long way in the snow to herd animals or hunt. The fur skis gradually lost their popularity in recent decades after paved roads linked houses to the outside world. However, in response to the nation’s goal of brightening up grassroots enthusiasm for ice and snow sports, Altay plans to protect and promote its skiing culture and better pass along its skiing tradition to future generations.
Silambek Sakish, 67, a herdsman in the village of Altay, began to learn the craft at the age of 15 from his father. He would cut high-quality pine into a plank and then bend the plank’s front end after the wood was heated in a fire. Wrapping the plank with horsehide was the last step.
Sakish was honored as an heritor of the craft of making fur skis in 2010, which had been assigned as an intangible (非物质) cultural heritage of Xinjiang. His works are exhibited in ski places, airports and train stations across Altay and also at the display center for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics to promote the district's deep historical connection to skiing. More young people have come to him to learn the craft, and his youngest son, who is 31, has followed in his footsteps to carry on the tradition.

【3】Which is the correct order of making fur skis?
a. Bending the plank’s front end.

23、How to get a good letter of recommendation
Your professors are often asked to write hundreds of letters of recommendation during teaching in colleges. 【1】, they do play a key role in helping employers get an idea of an applicant’s personality, persistence, and passion. Here are four points to keep in mind when it comes to asking for letters of recommendation.
【2】. Ideally, the letter writer will know you well and have plenty of positive things to say without much make-up. But it never hurts to share your personal statement that includes your accomplishments and passions. After all, it’s you that know how to let your highlights stand out.
Don’t tell your professor what to say. This one is a little tricky, because it seems to contradict the tip above. 【3】, but avoid telling him exactly what to write. Professors know how to pen an effective letter of recommendation well.
Don’t ask for a letter at the last minute. Rule of thumb: Give the professor at least a few months’ notice. Remember, your professor will spend quite a while composing the letter of recommendation, so express your request in a respectful, appreciative and thoughtful way. A last minute request will annoy the professor, and it may also lead to a sub- standard letter. 【4】.
Express your gratitude. A thoughtful letter of recommendation takes time. 【5】. Most professors write dozens of recommendations, if not more. Be sure to let them know that you appreciate their time and effort. Don’t risk ending up with a regret by forgetting to send a handwritten note with a sincere thank you.
A.Nobody wins in such a hurry
B.Expose a real yourself accordingly
C.Maintain a good relationship with them
D.And chances are you aren’t the only one asking
E.Give the professor a broad outline about your request
F.While these letters may not be as important as test scores
G.Because the employers care much about the recommendation
24、The Roman Colosseum( 罗马圆形大剧场), built around two thousand years ago, survived a 14th century earthquake and most of the 150-some foot high building is still standing. It has seen the rise and fall of enormous structures as well as the Roman Empire. Why could the ancient structure stand the test of time while many modern constructions fall apart after a few decades? Scientists believe the ancient Romans used a specific concrete which may account for its super-long existence.
Previous discoveries have confirmed the components of the Roman concrete: volcanic material, limestone (石灰石) and water. Architects suppose the volcanic material is what makes the building strong—which it does. But this is not enough to explain the architecture’s durability. A team of researchers recently discovered a magical power of the Roman concrete: self-healing. And the key actually lies in the tiny pieces of limestone. Worth mentioning is that researchers had taken them as impurities (杂质) due to the limitation of ancient technology. But it turned out that ancient Romans seemed to have discovered the secret.
When the Romans made the mixture, they heated up the limestone to turn it into quicklime, a very reactive chemical. Quicklime reacted with water and produced heat that set up a chemical foundation to strengthen the building material. Meanwhile, it would “wear” a hard “shell”, forming limestone pieces. It was these pieces that stopped the cracks (裂缝) from becoming bigger. When there was rain, the pieces reacted with water again, quickly filling the cracks.
For material scientist Ainissa Ramirez, this new understanding of ancient Roman concrete is a welcome discovery. “This is one way that the material can be greener,” says Ramirez, “The Romans made the material. We had to kind of figure out how they did it so that we can make better materials—and then, you know, in turn, be better guards of our environment.”
【1】Why could Roman Colosseum still exist according to the text?
A.It was rebuilt constantly.
B.It met few natural disasters.
C.It contained a special material.
D.Its shape increased the stability.
【2】What is the function of the limestone pieces?
A.To purify the concrete.
B.To react with volcanic material.
C.To make the structure water-proof.
D.To enable the building to repair itself.
【3】What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The rainwater.
B.The foundation.
C.The quicklime
D.The limestone.
【4】What can be inferred from Ainissa Ramirez’s words?
A.Architects can get inspiration from ancient structures.
B.The Romans’ building method remains a secret till now.
C.Romans’ wisdom throws light on eco-friendly architecture.
D.Scientists are exploring how to guard the ancient civilization.
