26、 Learning Chinese has never been more convenient now that everyone carries a smartphone in their pockets. There are a number of Mandarin Chinese learning apps for iPhone and Android out on the market, ranging from simple games and flashcard apps to full-blown language courses with your own virtual tutor.
Fluentu: Learn through Real World Content
If you have ever taken a language class in school you probably used a textbook filled with all sorts of exercises or reading passages. Usually this content is manufactured, boring, and not like anything you would normally meet in real life.
Fluentu takes a novel approach to language learning by using real world Chinese language video content taken from the Internet. Vocabulary specific to each video is taught and every video has subtitles in Chinese. Videos are usually very interesting and range from commercials, music videos and so on — great for cultural education.
ChineseSkill: Language Learning Game
ChineseSkill teaches language much like the popular language learning app Duolingo. It starts off the basics through contained topical modules like numbers, food, directions etc. Instruction is laid out in an intuitive (直观的)way, slowly introducing grammar and vocabulary through a series of mini-games. Most of the tasks in Chinese Skill use pinyin and English but there are also some character recognition tasks as well. If you want to learn how to write Chinese, this app won't be enough for you. But for basic conversational listening, speaking, and vocabulary, this little app does the trick in a very entertaining way. Even better it's totally free!
Skritter: learning to write Chinese characters

27、 This summer my mom and I did something meaningful and interesting.
Because of the stresses of high school, I felt depressed from time to time. What’s worse, I began to eat many junk foods. As a result, I had gained a lot of weight.
My mom decided to take me to work out, and she cooked delicious but healthy snacks for me. However, I broke my word to my mom not to buy high calorie snacks. My mom found my snack wrappers in the garbage. She got really angry and told me something I will remember forever. She said, “ My dear, I can forget the fact that you cheated, but you shouldn’t. Remember it’s not all about losing weight but about your whole life. If you want to achieve something, take it seriously, and persist(坚持)no matter what happens.”
Since then, we have been out running each morning, and we do some yoga in the evening. We sing and laugh while running along the empty roads. Day by day, I am feeling better. Exercise is helping to strengthen my body and refresh my spirits. At the same time, my mom and I cook different dishes together. Isn’t it amazing that I’m making such tasty-looking foods myself? Cooking brings great joy to me.
These times with my mom have changed my whole attitude to life. I have started to learn the importance of sticking to goals and how to relax. As the famous Brazilian soccer player Pele said, “With strong will, the feet are equal to a pair of wings.”

28、Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the greatest resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twentyfive thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort, even though some aspects of English usage and the meaning of many words have changed since Shakespeare’s day.
However, it is surprising that we should know comparatively little about the life of the greatest English author. We know that Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon, and that he died there in 1616. He almost certainly attended the Grammar School in the town, but of this we cannot be sure. We know he was married there in 1582 to Anne Hathaway and that he had three children. We know that he spent much of his life in London writing his masterpieces. But this is almost all that we do know.
However, what is important about Shakespeare’s life is not its details but the products, the plays and the poems. For many years scholars have been trying to add a few facts about Shakespeare’s life to the small number we already possess and for an equally long time critics have been theorizing about the plays. Sometimes, indeed, it seems that the poetry of Shakespeare will disappear under the great mass of comment that has been written upon it.
Fortunately, this is not likely to happen. Shakespeare’s people have long delighted not just the English but lovers of literature everywhere, and will continue to do so after the scholars and critics and all their works have been forgotten.
【1】What’s Para.1 mainly about?
A.The great varieties in writing styles.
B.The great length of Shakespeare’s works.
C.The richness of the content in Shakespeare’s works.
D.The rich English language used by Shakespeare in his works.
【2】According to the passage, which of the following remains uncertain about Shakespeare?
A.His date of birth.
B.His marriage.
C.His life in the Grammar School.
D.His date of death.
【3】What does the last sentence in Para.3 mean?
A.People can’t see the poetry of Shakespeare any more.
B.The comment is printed on the poetry of Shakespeare.
C.People don’t think the poetry of Shakespeare good any more.
D.Some people pay more attention to the comment than to Shakespeare’s poetry.
【4】The underlined phrase “Shakespeare’s people” in Para.4 refers to ________.
A.the characters in Shakespeare’s works
B.the people whose native language is English
C.the people living in Shakespeare’s day
D.the readers of Shakespeare’s works
29、 As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments. Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.
One of the processes growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.
