二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Today in the UK teenagers are allowed to work from the age of 13, and many do take up part-time jobs. It's a taste of independence and sometimes a useful thing to put on their CV(简历). Teenagers agree that it teaches valuable lessons about working with adults and also about managing their money.

Some research has shown that not taking part-time job could be detrimental to a person later on. A 2015 study by the UK Commission on Employment and Skills found that not taking part-time work at school age had been blamed by employers' organizations for young adults being ill-prepared for full-time employment. However, recent studies have still shown that the number of schoolchildren in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by a fifth in the past five years.

So, does this mean that British teenagers are now more afraid of hard work? Probably not. Young people feel that going out to work will affect their performance at school, and they are under more pressure now to study hard and get good exam results — and a good job in the long term. However, Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told BBC News that 'Properly regulated part-time work is a good way of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives.' In reality, it's all about getting the right balance between doing part-time work and having enough time to study and rest.

1Which is the advantage of having part-time jobs?

    A.Learning useful lessons.

    B.Spending money at will.

    C.Living independently.

    D.Making some money.

2What does the underlined word 'detrimental' probably mean?

    A.Careful. B.Helpful.

    C.Faithful. D.Harmful.

3From the passage, in UK we know_______ .

A.hard work is not fit for teenagers

B.a girl aged 10 is not allowed to work

C.a fifth children have taken part-time jobs

D.working benefits teens' performance at school

    4What is Geoff Barton's opinion?

    A.Learning some necessary working skills.

B.Keeping a balance between study and rest.

C.Having as many part-time jobs as possible.

D.Focusing on teenagers’ achievements at school.

  • 28、   Elizabeth Bishop is considered one of the best American poets of the 20th century. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1911. Her dad died when she was just a baby and her mom never recovered from the loss. She went to live with her grandparents in Nova Scotia, Canada when she was five. Eventually Bishop attended Vassar College, where she began to write poetry.

At Vassar she discovered Marianne Moore's poetry and met Ms Moore and began their life-long friendship. She later met poet Robert Lowell. She wrote tons and tons of letters to both of them, which is good for us because we would otherwise know very little of her personal life.

Bishop published her first book of poetry in 1946 and wrote until her death in 1979. She would spend years working on a single poem. Her poems are not the result of hasty scribbling (匆忙乱写) on paper while eating breakfast. She would look through drafts of poems again and again and improve them until they were as close to perfect as she could get them.

Reading Elizabeth Bishop is like being transported to the very place, the very moment she's writing about. She leads us to a microscope so we can see every smallest part of the scene. It seems that she's always asking us to notice more, and more until the poem is so clear in our minds that it's almost painful—like a light that's too bright.

1What do we know about Bishop's early life?

A.She was mainly brought up by her grandparents. B.She spent her childhood mainly in Worcester.

C.She was always encouraged by her parents. D.She started to write poems at five.

2Why are Bishop's letters to Moore and Lowell important?

A.They have a deep influence on other poets. B.They offer much information about her life.

C.They help us study Moore and Lowell's poetry. D.They prove she had friendships with famous poets.

3What can we say about Bishop's poetic creation?

A.She liked to write in the morning. B.She could write poems at high speed.

C.She tried her best to achieve perfection. D.She published hundreds of books of poetry.

4Which word can be used to best describe the style of Bishop’s poems?

    A.Enthusiastic. B.Romantic. C.Humorous. D.Exact.

  • 29、   It was Monday. Mrs Smith’s dog was hungry, but there was not any meat in the house.

Considering that there was no better way, Mrs Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words on it, “Give my dog half a pound of meat” Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently, “Take this to the butcher(卖肉者), and he’s going to give you your lunch today.”

Holding the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher’s shop. It gave the paper to the butcher. The butcher read it carefully, recognized that it was really the lady’s handwriting and pleasantly did as he was asked to. The dog was very happy, and ate the meat up immediately.

At midday, the dog came to the shop again. It gave the butcher a piece of paper again. After reading it, he gave it half a pound of meat once more.

B.a piece of paper could bring it half a pound of meat
