26、 We human beings haven’t been good friends to animals. For thousands of years, we have been polluting the environment ,making it hard for animals to live on the planet. We have been killing animals for their fur, feathers or meat, or simply because they are dangerous. As a result, many kinds of animals have disappeared forever. Hundreds more are on the endangered list today.
Should we care about animals? Of course we should. If animals of a certain kind all disappear, they will never come back again. Animals are more than just resources of things we need. Every kind of animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying any kind of animal can lead to many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(鹰),the corn and grain that the farmers stored were destroyed by rats and mice. Why?Because hawks eat rats and mice. With less and less hawks to keep down their numbers, rats and mice multiplied quickly. And if people kill too many birds, the fields will be bothered with insects. It is because birds eat insects. When there are less and less birds, more and more insects will eat the crops.
Luckily, we’ve realized that we shouldn’t kill animals any more. And people are working hard to save those animals that would disappear soon. The government also passed laws to protect the endangered animals. In fact, quite a few countries have passed such laws. These laws forbid the killing of any kind of animal on the endangered list. We should try our best to protect and save the endangered animals.
【1】Why do people kill animals?
A.Animals cause endless trouble.
B.They kill animals for something they need.
C.Animals destroy their natural balance.
D.They kill animals to control their number.

B.animals are very beautiful and interesting
C.animals are good food resources
D.every kind of animal is very important in nature
【3】What can be learned from this text?
A.Killing off one kind of animals would cause some new problems. B.The endangered animals should be kept away from people.
C.People cared much about animals because they relied on them. D.The number of dangerous animals increased too fast in the past.
【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the future of endangered animals?
A.Doubtful B.Uncaring C.Optimistic D.Negative
27、 One night recently, I was driving down a two-lane highway at about 60 miles an hour. A car approached from the opposite direction at about the same speed. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second. I wondered whether he might be thinking, as I was, how dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be put off by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden end. Though we had never spoken a word to each other, he relied on me in just the same way.
Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level, we all depend upon one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even with strangers.
As technology shrinks our world, the need increases for cooperative action among nations. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly organized to identify the SARS virus, which saved thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a similar problem, one requiring coordinated action by police and intelligence forces across the world. We must recognize that our fates (命运) are not ours alone to control .
In my own life, I’ve put great stock in personal responsibility. But, as the years have passed, I’ve also come to believe that there are moments when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of others. So, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a dark road , what we must learn is that the approaching light may not be a threat , but a shared moment of trust.
【1】The author considers ________ very important.
A.driving alone on a dark road B.shared trust and cooperation
C.cooperation to identify SARS virus D.independence of people
【2】The author said that they depended on each other in the same way because ________.
A.the approaching car was very dangerous
B.they both drove their car at a terrific speed
C.it was dark and the road was not wide enough
D.he might be killed out of the other’s careless driving
【3】From the second paragraph, we know the author drew the important lesson from ________.
A.only one experience B.many friends and strangers
C.a driver on a dark road D.many similar experiences
【4】The need for cooperation increases because _________.
A.terrorism can happen everywhere
B.the SARS virus spread quickly
C.peoples’ fates can’t be controlled by themselves
D.the world has become smaller
【5】We can infer from the last paragraph that the author has ________.
A.had a change on his viewpoint of life
B.counted upon himself alone in everything
C.had no trust in others’ good faith and judgment
D.believed in one’s own personal responsibility
28、 Do you want to control a device with your mind? Do you want to power your home with the energy of your own activities? These are two of the developments that experts at International Business Machines Company (IBM) think will become reality within the next five years. The technology company has released its latest “5 in 5” report.
The experts at IBM think people will soon be able to control many electronic devices simply by using their mind. They say people will soon have a way to just think about calling or emailing someone in order to make it happen.
Another prediction is a way for people to power their homes and offices using energy from activities like walking or running. Bernie Meyerson, IBM’s Vice President of Innovation, says this is known as micro-electronic generation.
Another prediction: passwords could soon become a thing of past. IBM says developments in biometric technology could soon make passwords unnecessary. Some of the most common biometrics used to identify people are fingerprints, face and voice recognition, and iris scans. The iris is the colored part of the eye. Bernie Meyerson says this technology will soon be more widely used by money machines and other devices.
The fourth prediction from the experts at IBM; better technology to prevent unwanted emails. Bernie Meyerson said, “As you get rid of emails that you don’t want to read, the device learns your habits and words for you as our assistant by eliminating stuff you never want anyway.”
The last prediction on IBM’s “5 in 5” list is an end to the “digital divide” between those who have technology and those who do not.

“We asked eight local singers to write and record songs about the disease. He said that the songs are played through loudspeakers in his village every evening.
The songwriting campaign(活动) has been effective because folk songs are a traditional art form in the region, making them more readily understandable and acceptable for local residents, Huang said.
Guangxi has been one of the hardest-hit areas in China in terms of the number of AIDS infections discovered there, ranking only after central China’s Henan Province.

A Bad Idea
Think you can walk, dive, take phone calls, e-mail and listen to music at the same time? Well, New York's new law says you can't. And you'll be 【1】 $S100 if you do it on a New York City street.
