二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Interactions between people and elephants have a long history. Elephants have been trained and used by human beings for thousands of years, for everything from transportation to construction to logging to war.

In more recent times, Asian elephants have been used in entertainment and as a living 'machine' to help move logs through the jungle as part of the logging industry. The latter changed in Thailand in 1989, when the Thai government banned the use of elephants in the logging industry. Owners of elephants had very little choice but to turn to tourism to earn enough to care for themselves and their elephants by offering elephant riding to tourists.

Mahouts (象夫) are the elephant handlers who you will see riding or managing the elephants at any camp you visit. The traditional mahout life isn't easy. They are bonded to their elephant and they rarely have time off or time for family.

These years, younger mahouts in Thailand have been more likely to leave the mahout life to find jobs in the city, resulting in elephants having to get used to multiple mahouts. This can lead to additional stress on the elephant, or result in abuse by a mahout trying to manage an elephant that hasn’t built any level of trust with him.

Opponents of elephant riding may suggest that elephant rides be illegal. My worry is that an immediate ban could lead to another massive change in how elephants are treated, similar to ending elephant logging in 1989. How will mahouts that are currently making a living and supporting their elephants through rides be able to continue to do so? The average lifespan of an elephant is 60 years. Any solution needs to take into account the long-term effects on the elephants currently employed giving rides.

【1】What happened in 1989 in Thailand?

    A.Elephants lost their jobs.

    B.Elephants joined in tourism.

    C.Entertainment was forbidden.

    D.The government banned logging.

【2】What will cause the ill treatment of some elephants?

A.The great stress to make money.

    B.The former masters’ leaving them.

C.The heavy load on the elephants.

D.The owners' mistrust of the elephants.

【3】What's the best title for the passage?

    A.Will You Go to Thailand?

    B.Why are Elephants Trained?

    C.How do Mahouts Train Elephants?

D.Should You Ride Elephants in Thailand?

【4】Why does the author write this passage?

    A.To present a problem.

    B.To criticize mahouts.

    C.To introduce Thailand.

    D.To record his experience.

  • 27、Chinese traditional painting and dance are two vital parts of the art world. But what about when they meet each other?

This year, a dance drama titled Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting was staged on CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala and went viral.

According to CCTV, this poetic dance program was inspired by the 900-year-old Chinese painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains. Created by Song Dynasty (960-1279) painter Wang Ximeng at about 18, the painting is “stunning in its sweeping scale, rich coloration and the expressive details”, reported CCTV. It shows a Chinese blue-green landscape: “mountains and groupings of infinite rise and fall between cloudless sky and rippling water”.

To show the Chinese traditional aesthetics (美学) of the painting, the dance performance conceptualized dancers as the mountains. They each had a different hairstyle, which resembled a mountain rock. The clothes they wore were shades of green and blue, which is also a poetic interpretation of the mountains and rivers.

When the dancers swayed elegantly, audiences seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers.

“It brings me a pure experience of beauty. It is not only a drama but also an ‘exhibition’. Vast mountains and rivers are coming to life!” internet user Mo Weisha wrote in a review. “More than a thousand years later, green mountains and rivers still wow people as they did long ago.”

Some people even decided to watch the dance again when it was staged in the theaters later.

In fact, in recent years, more and more modem shows highlight Chinese traditional culture and have received warm welcome. As for why, it is attributed to people’s great love for traditional culture.

“The younger generations have grown up with a more open mindset. They embrace Chinese culture and are proud of it,” Yao Wei, director of Henan TV station’s Innovation Center, told China Daily.

【1】What can we learn about the painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains from the text?

A.It was painted in several bright colors.

    B.It shows natural beauty vividly.

C.It was created over a thousand years ago.

D.It is of small size but includes great details.

【2】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The unique Chinese beauty shown in the drama.

B.Innovative design to dress dancers like mountains.

C.What the drama and the painting have in common.

D.How the drama presents the elements from the painting.

【3】Which of the following does Mo Weisha probably agree with?

A.Mountains and rivers should be better exhibited in the drama.

B.The mountains and rivers in the drama are true to life.

C.Modem people value natural beauty more than ever before.

D.The drama could look better in theaters than on TV.

【4】Why are shows about Chinese traditional culture becoming popular according to Yao Wei?

A.People are more open to traditional culture.

B.People are happy to see new forms of art.

C.Chinese culture has been spreading around the world.

D.People have received more access to traditional culture.

  • 28、Saving money for the future is one of the great passions of wealthy people. The rich are getting richer because of the way they spend their money.

They are successful at controlling their expenses in order to grow their wealth. One example is Warren Buffett, one of the world’s wealthiest people. He always practices spending money wisely. He is not fond of buying expensive things. He knows the benefits of saving money.

John Poole said, “You must learn to save first and spend afterwards.” If you want to achieve your financial goal, the most important step is to save first. You can’t grow your wealth or money if you don’t start saving first. Did you know that Mark Zuckerberg, one of the youngest billionaires and co-founders of Facebook, is a great saver? During his wedding, the reception was held in his backyard in Palo Alto, California rather than in a fancy five-star hotel. During the couple’s honeymoon in Italy, many people saw them eating in McDonald’s. This guy is still wearing ordinary T-shirts to work every day. I understand why he practices saving. Saving money is important to him to grow his wealth and grow it quickly. He uses extra money to put into other businesses, investments and acquisitions.

Saving money for the future gives you protection for unexpected circumstances. You don’t know what will happen to you over the next days or weeks. And living below your means can give you plenty of room to save. You can use your savings to pay off your mortgage (按揭贷款) early. Also, people who are fond of saving money for the future can retire early.

Saving money for the future is essential. Today will not be the same as tomorrow. You don’t know when the rainy season will come. Every day is full of surprises, and to be ready for uncertainty, save now for your future.

【1】What does the example of Warren Buffett explain?

A.The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

B.Buying expensive things is not a good habit.

C.Saving money can bring us a lot of benefits.

D.Controlling our expenses helps to increase our wealth.

【2】Why did Mark Zuckerberg hold his wedding in his backyard?

A.He was not a generous man although he was rich.

B.He had to save money for his honeymoon with his wife.

C.He wanted to use extra money to expand his business.

D.He was practicing the skill of saving money.

【3】What does the underlined part in the fourth paragraph probably mean?

    A.Spending according to your habit.

    B.Saving money for tomorrow’s uncertainty.

C.Saving money for living better in the future.

D.Spending less than you can afford.

【4】Which benefit of saving money is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A.It makes you feel at safe when an emergency happens.

B.It leads you to live a high-quality life.

C.It helps you achieve a debt-free life early.

D.It allows you to enjoy your retirement early.

  • 29、   Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian cultures, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.

Our faces show emotions, but we should not attempt to “read” people from another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions. Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressions permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.

It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States. People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.

1What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.?

    A.Joy. B.Politeness.

    C.Love. D.Thankfulness.

2The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile can _________.

    A.show friendliness to strangers

B.be used to hide true feelings

C.be used in the wrong places

    D.show personal habits

3What should we do before attempting to “read” people?

A.Figure out what they will do next.

B.Find out about their past experience.

    C.Understand their cultural backgrounds.

D.Learn about their relations with others.

4What would be the best title for the text?

A.Appearance and Figure B.Smiles and Relationships

    C.Habits and Emotions D.Facial Expressiveness

It was late spring When my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.

A pot of flowers satin he back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car . Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. “What are you doing? “I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be stuck there, so far from home. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute, she called back through the open windows.

Impatiently, I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before they settled on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty-handed.

Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist(前台接待员). ”“What”She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven’t received any in a while. ”

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name? “To this she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me. ”

Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passerby, since we had seen so few along the way.
