27、It was past midnight when I saw an email that told me that I had been accepted into Interna-tional Summer School at Oslo University, Norway. I woke up everyone at home to tell them that I would be one often five hundred students visiting this beautiful Scandinavian country for ten weeks on a full scholarship (奖学金). My parents were delighted but anxious about how I’d manage on my own in a foreign land for the first time.
The day I left the county was packed with excitement and nervousness. I slept through the long flight and woke up to the announcement that we had come to Oslo Airport. Now, if I were in India, I would have taken a taxi to my destination, but my online research had taught me that in Oslo, tak-ing a taxi would be considered as a wasteful way. So I took the subway to the university. Upon my arrival, I was told that my room had been arranged and my roommate had settled in. My roommate was a Chinese student, who became my first friend. Though it was sunny outside, I was tired. I re-alized it was close to midnight. Sunsets during summer are very late in Norway.
I was to study a course on International Development and the class had students from 20 different countries, I worked with my classmates on group projects. Team work brought us closer as a u-nit. We realized we shared similar dreams about our future. Oslo is a city that has an excellent pub-lic transport system. One can get to a sandy beach ora forest within minutes. In our free time, we went for hikes and I realized how much I loved being outdoors. I learnt to read maps and picked up Norwegian. The hardest part was getting used to eating dinner at 5:00 pm.
I grew up and into myself during this trip. I came back to my hometown with a bagful of happy memories including my new friends who had helped me and walked with me in this beautiful country.

28、 What kinds of rooms are your favorite spots for studying? We are going to guess that they are probably not painted bright red or yellow. But maybe they should be. Imagine. You are suddenly asked to prepare for an exam. You have two rooms to choose from. One is a pale blue, and the other is a bright red. Which one do you settle into for study? Is one going to get your brain fired up for learning, or let you relax into the best state of concentration?
According to researchers at Curtin University in Australia, it might be best to camp out in the bright red room when you are looking to store information. It might sound strange, since we often think of pale rooms — soft blues or light greens — are relaxing. And they seem to be: The Curtin University study showed that pale colors made participants feel more relaxed and calm, while bright colors increased heart rate. But calming and relaxing, it turns out, may not always be the best environment for deep concentration or knowledge gaining. Reading comprehension was much better in the bright rooms than in the pale rooms. Although participants reported that they generally preferred the pale rooms to study in as an approach to relax into work, the researchers saw just the opposite — that the bright - colored rooms seemed to lead to greater concentration.
While this might seem only surprising, the findings get into a rather controversial (有争议的) area of psychological study. The Yerkes — Dodson Law says that a little bit of stress is good for achieving best performance, while too much stress negatively affects it. The higher heart rate and the reports of the bright colors creating a heavy atmosphere might just suggest that a little stress was good for the brain.
【1】What is the common idea mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.Pale colors appeal to all tastes.
B.Few people like bright red or yellow.
C.Light — colored rooms make you feel nervous.
D.Bright — colored rooms are not good for studying.
【2】What might directly affect the research results according to Para 2?
A.How participants react to colors. B.Participants’ preferences in colors.
C.What participants read in the rooms. D.Time participants spent in the rooms.
【3】What can be concluded from the study by Curtin University?
A.Higher stress leads to better performance.
B.Most people know how to make use of colors.
C.Stress is necessary when you want to concentrate.
D.Being relaxed is very important for people studying.
【4】What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Findings about people’s favourite room colors.
B.Room colors can affect one’s academic performance.
C.Bright — colored rooms can create a heavy atmosphere.
D.Light — colored rooms help people feel relaxed into work.
29、 I’d just finished some shopping, and was getting ready to leave the supermarket’s parking lot, when I heard music coming from the area of the shopping carts (手推车). I knew it was someone I knew, well — the beggar, I couldn’t really call him.
He never begged. It was more like he was open to accepting presents. He never had a sign out, never spoke and never looked at you to beg. He would just sit quietly on the side of the entrance, out of the way, have a little box outside, and thank everyone very politely who gave him something.
He didn’t look like the many people I knew in my town who lived on the streets. His clothes always looked quite clean. I often wondered how he’d gotten to live on the streets. And he was playing his guitar, just like the last time I’d seen him in summer. He hadn’t noticed me then, being so deep into his music.
I started to talk to him. He told me that he had been an epileptic(癫痫患者) as a child and as a young man now, he couldn’t even get the job the social services try to offer people like him — everybody seemed afraid of the responsibility, even though he’d had no seizure (发作) for the past 13 years.
I started feeling sorry for him, but then he said, “I’ve made my peace with that. I’m happy I got an apartment.” He said he’d gotten so much help, and he wanted to try to give back, starting with the music.
I was so happy that he remembered his love for music, and shared his music with the people passing by. I was glad he found an apartment, and had the inner strength not to let himself down, and as he said, “found my faith again”.
【1】In the author’s opinion, what made the man different from other homeless men?
A. He only wanted gifts.
B. He could write music.
C. He always begged near a shop.
D. He always wore clean clothes.
【2】Why was the young man unable to find a job?
A. Because he was too weak to work.
B. Because he considered music to be his job.
C. Because others misunderstood his illness.
D. Because bosses were short of responsibility.
【3】What was the young man’s attitude towards his present situation?
A. Doubtful. B. Grateful.
C. Unconcerned. D. Disappointed.
30、I have just finished my 23rd year of teaching at universities. And there have been several ______ in the way students approach their classes. The most noticeable is that when I started teaching, students took notes in notebooks, but now every desk has a laptop on it when I give a lecture.
There seem to be a lot of obvious ______ of taking notes on a computer. For one it is easy to save the notes in a place where you can ______ them later. For another, you will be able to read your notes late especially if your handwriting is poor.
Before we go out and encourage every student to bring a laptop to class, ______ , it is worth checking out a study by Pam Mueller and Danny Oppenheimer. They compared college students' ______ in tests following exposure to material. The students were assigned either to take notes by hand or using a laptop.
In the first study, students took notes while watching a lecture. Then, they engaged in other activities for about 30 minutes. Finally, they were given a quiz about the lecture. The quiz contained factual questions as well as conceptual questions that required some ______ of the subject matter Students did about equally well on the factual question ______ how they took notes. However, the students did much ______ on the conceptual questions when they took notes by hand than when they took them using the laptop.
The experiments ______ the content of people's notes to the lecture and found that when people typed their notes on a laptop, they were much more likely to ______ what people said directly rather than writing their impressions of it. That is, people writing out their notes had to think more ______ about the content of what they heard than those people who were just typing.
Then, in the second study, the experiments told people using the laptops to take good notes rather than just taking down what they heard. Even when people were given these ______ , they still had a greater tendency to type what they heard than people who were taking notes by hand. As before, the people who used the laptops did more poorly on a test of ______ knowledge than those who took notes by hand.
So there is real value in having to ______ the material in the process of taking notes. It is because handwriting is slow and ______ that people have to think more clearly about what they want to write down rather than copying down what is being said.

It was a bright summer’s day. The weather was pleasant, but the wind from the Sahara desert made it extremely hot and wet. A ship stopped off the coast of Africa. The seagulls were circling overhead and crying loudly. In the distance, several dolphins were jumping out of the water at times to create a big white wave.
Just before sunset, the captain came on deck and called out, “Time for a swim.”
Immediately sailors jumped into the water, lowered a canvas mat (帆布垫子) and made it into a swimming pool. They had been waiting for this moment the whole day.
There were two young boys on the ship. They both jumped in, but swam out into the open sea since it was too crowded inside the “pool”. They played and chased (追逐) each other in the open sea. Their fathers cheered them on, often urging one of the boys to prove his bravery over the other.
Suddenly, something gray from a distance was coming closer and closer. Somebody from the deck called out, “Shark! Shark!” The fin was moving faster. Confusion and panic arose, and everyone climbed to safety. Everyone, except the two boys. They had not heard the shouts.
The shark was moving towards the boys.
The captain shouted, “Come back my boys! There is a shark out there!” One of the boys was his son. For the first time in his life, he didn’t know what to do. He could not think clearly. The captain’s face became as white as a sheet. He could feel his legs were shaking so badly that he nearly fell to the ground.
The people on the deck screamed wildly. But the boys could not hear them. They continued to play and to swim, unaware of the danger approaching them fast. Some sailors lowered a boat, jumped into it and attempted to row towards the boys.
Para 1: Just then, one of the boys looked back and saw the large animal he knew too well.
Para 2: Their screams brought the captain back to his senses.
