  • 26、Ruth Bader Ginsburg spent her life fighting for women to be treated equally. In doing so, she became an inspiring role model for women and girls around the world.

Her passion for women’s rights began when she was young. She started off her adult life having trouble finding a job. Even though she was smart, determined, and capable of doing the job, she was passed over primarily because she was a woman. She felt like she was being treated unfairly, or discriminated against, only because she was a woman. She wanted to do something about it. But at the time there were no laws in the United States to protect her.

She decided to devote her career to being a lawyer and fighting for equal rights of women. Then, early in her legal career, when she was 29 years old, Ms. Ginsburg took a trip to Sweden to perform legal research. What she saw really focused her on fighting for women in the workplace. Seeing the progress women had made in Sweden convinced her even more that America was behind and wrong in its treatment of women.

Back in the USA, laws advocating for women’s rights were missing. She decided that she would help invent laws, write them, and defend them. Ginsburg would also become a professor to help other women to become lawyers so that they could do the same thing. And then, in 1993, after years’ practicing and teaching laws, she became only the 2nd female justice of the Supreme Court.

At only 5'1" tall and as a generally quiet person, Ms. Ginsburg’s power came from her focus, her determination, and her integrity(诚实正直). She went on to become an inspiring role model for girls and women around the world and one of the most respected justices in history. She changed the lives of many women and girls in the United States and beyond.

【1】Why did Ruth fail to get a job?

B.Women can not work by law.

【3】When did Ruth become a female justice of the Supreme Court?

    A.In 1987.

  • 27、   As globalization continues to make the world a smaller place, and goods become more accessible across borders, concerns about food safety in the AsiaPacific region have steadily risen over the years. An APEC forum is being held in Beijing, to find ways to better address the problem.

156 participants from 19 APEC economies and 4 non-APEC members attended the APEC Food Safety Cooperation Forum. Created 7 years ago, the forum has been actively looking for ways to strengthen food safety standard in the region, without affecting trade.

“As consumers are faced with more varieties of food, the potential food safety risk also becomes bigger. This forum has helped APEC economies to cooperate in supervision (监督), exchange information, and improve the overall food safety standard in the AsiaPacific region,” said director of China's General Administration of Quality Supervision Wu Qinghai.

For the first time the forum has brought together highlevel regulators, academics, and industry stakeholders to talk about their respective roles in safety supervision. They say governments alone cannot shoulder this heavy duty.

In China, the continuous food safety problems have greatly hurt consumers' confidence in domestic products; therefore more turned to imports. However, problems related to quality of those imported goods also began to show. In July this year, more than 400 batches ()of food imports from 35 countries and regions were found substandard by the country's top quality supervisor.

Governments and industries have been brought closer by this forum. As food moves more freely beyond borders, this forum is hoped to promote safety control cooperation, so APEC  members can better benefit from the economic integration (经济一体化).

1What kind of function can the forum play?

A.It has greatly influenced the economy in the area.

B.It has long been able to put every side's efforts together.

C.It helps to bring government regulators and industries together.

D.It has found ways to deal with safety problems.

2The last but one paragraph tells us that ________.

A.the Chinese customers are more satisfied with their food safety

B.food imported from other countries are indeed high in quality

C.many Chinese customers would rather buy some foreign food

D.there are only 35 countries and regions exporting food to China

3The underlined word “address” in the first paragraph can be replaced by “________”.

    A.send a letter about B.deal with

    C.deliver a speech on D.call off

4According to the article, which of the following statements is WRONG?

A.People can buy foreign food more easily than ever.

B.The more varieties of food, the bigger the potential food safety risk.

C.Food safety problems have appeared many times before this forum.

D.Governments have started their cooperation with academies and industries before this forum.

  • 28、   To be rulers of the reality, we must know how to ask for suggestions. But one thing that must be kept in mind is that when we ask others for suggestions we must be open to suggestions.

I wrote a business letter one day. I gave it to my husband for suggestions. After reading the letter, he felt that there were some problems in my letter. I told him I needed more information, but he said he wasn’t sure. Then he reread the letter and made notes. I took the letter and revised it. As I was writing, I could see my letter improved based on his suggestions. Again, I handed the letter back to my husband proudly and confidently. But he said it was still not right. I was a little annoyed and said some bad words to him.

Many people may have the same reaction when they experience the same situation. It’s normal that people don’t like objection or critical words. However, we should hold a right attitude towards these words: Analyze the objection and listen to critical words with an open mind.

I then picked up the letter. After an hour of revision, I went back to my husband contritely. I told him I was sorry for what I had said. And after he read the letter again, he declared that it was fine.

That leads me to the following: When you ask for advice on a project, be grateful. Understand that the suggestions you get may be negative. Understand that it may mean more work for you. And keep in mind that the final responsibility for the project is still yours. So be modest and thankful even if he or she has noted some problems.

1Why did the author give her business letter to her husband?

A.To show off her excellent work.

B.To ask him to make some changes.

C.To have him type it on the computer.

D.To ask him to give her some advice.

2What kind of people is the author’s husband?

A.A person who is good at expressing himself.

B.A person of selfishness and pride.

C.A person of honesty and patience.

D.A person of humor, but carelessness.

3What does the word “contritely” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.pleasantly

    B.regretfully

    C.proudly

    D.carefully

4What attitude should we take when we are given suggestions?

A.Don’t get upset if some are negative.

B.Don’t refuse any help from the giver.

C.Do keep silent before taking action.

D.Don’t quarrel but talk with the giver.

  • 29、There was a time in the 1960’s and 1970’s when some people believed that coffee would replace tea as Britain’s favourite drink, but that did not happen, and today, tea remains Britain’s favourite drink.

To say that the British are fond of tea is something of an understatement(轻描淡写). From the Royal(皇室的) Family down to the homeless and the out-of-work, tea is more than just a pleasure. It is an important part of life!

The popularity of tea in the United Kingdom has a long history. It was in 1657 that Thomas Garway, the owner of a coffee house, sold the first tea in London. The drink soon became popular as another choice besides coffee.

In those days, however, tea was not something for anyone. For a century and a half, it remained an expensive drink. Many bosses served a cup of it to their workers in the middle of the morning, thus inventing a lasting British institution, the “tea break”. But as a social drink outside the workplace, tea was served for the nobility(贵族) and for the growing middle classes. Among those who had the money for tea, it became very popular as a drink to be enjoyed in cafés and “tea gardens”.

It was the 7th Duchess of Bedford who, in around 1800, started the popular “afternoon tea”, which took place at about four o’clock. At about the same time, the Earl of Sandwich popularised a new way of eating bread with something (e. g. jam) between them, and before long, a small meal at the end of the afternoon with tea and sandwiches had become part of a way of life.

As tea became much cheaper during the nineteenth century, its popularity spread right through British society. In working-class households, it was served with the main meal of the day, eaten when workers returned home after a day’s labour. This meal has become known as “high tea”.

Today, tea can be drunk at any time of day. Most people in Britain drink tea for breakfast. The mid-morning “tea break” is an institution in British offices and factories. Later in the day, “afternoon tea” is still a way of life in the south of England and among the middle classes, while “high tea” has remained a tradition in the north of Britain.

【1】Who played an important part in the beginning of tea time in England?

    A.Thomas Garway.

    B.The Royal Family.

    C.The Earl of Sandwich.

    D.The Duchess of Bedford.

【2】What does the underlined word “institution” mean in Paragraph 4?

    A.drink

    B.workplace

    C.tradition

    D.order

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.The “tea break” kept the workers from being sleepy after lunch.

B.Workers could enjoy a cup of tea in “tea gardens” at their workplace.

C.“High tea” was usually served with the main meal for the middle classes.

D.The “afternoon tea” together with sandwiches became popular in around 1800.

【4】What is the best title of the passage?

    A.The Popularity of Tea

    B.Tea and the British

    C.Tea and the Middle Class

    D.The History of Tea

Middle English is the name 1(give) to the English used from around the 12th to the 15th centuries. Many things played a part in the 2(develop) of this new type of English. The most important 3(贡献) was from the Normans, a 4 (French speak) people who5 (打败) England and took control of the country in 1066. 6, the Norman Conquest did not affect English as much as the Angles and the Saxons’ victory about 600 years earlier, which led to Old English 7 (replace) Celtic. Even though the Normans spoke French for the e8 250 years they ruled England, French did not replace English 9 the first language. On the other hand, the English language did borrow many words from French. This resulted in even more words with similar meanings, such as answer (from Old English) and reply (from Old French).
