26、 Older adults with a better sense of smell may live longer than those who have a poor sense of smell, a new study suggests. The study was a project of researchers in the United States that was continuing for over 13 years. They asked nearly 2300 men and women to recognize 12 common smells. All the subjects were from 71 to 82 years of age. The researchers gave the adults marks, from 0 to 12, based on how many smells they recognize correctly.
During the years of follow-up research, over 1200 of the adults died. When the study was started, none of the adults were weak. They could walk about half a kilometre, climb 10 steps and independently complete daily activities. In the latest findings, the researchers noted those with a weak nose were 30% more likely to die than people with a good sense of smell. The findings were reported last month in the scientific publication Annals of Internal Medicine.
Honglei Chen, a doctor with Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, was the lead author of the report on the study. He said the connection between a poor sense of smell and an increased risk of dying was limited to adults who first reported good or excellent health. This suggests that a poor sense of smell is an early and sensitive sign of worsening health before it is recognizable in medical tests. With a poor sense of smell, people are more likely to die of brain and heart diseases, but not of cancer or breathing problems.
The results also suggest that a poor sense of smell may be an early warning of poor health in older age that goes beyond dementia (痴呆) or other neurodegenerative (神经变性的) diseases. These often signal the beginning of the weakening of the mind or body.

【3】What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

27、How Plants Branch Out to Access Water
New research has discovered how plant roots sense the availability of water in soil and then adapt (适应)their shape to acquire water. The discovery could enable crops to be raised which are more adaptive to changes in climate conditions, such as the absence of water, and help ensure food safety in the future.
These findings, published in the journal Science, describe a new mechanism(机制) discovered by cooperating teams at the universities of Nottingham and Durham.
Roots are very important for plants to acquire water and nutrients(营养)from the soil. Water is necessary to plant growth , yet changing climatic conditions makes acquiring water from soil even more challenging. Plants are able to adapt to different soil moisture(湿润)conditions by changing their roots.
The researchers discovered that plant roots lacking a branching master gene were no longer able to branch out. They found that when roots have access to moisture, the certain gene remains active and promotes root branching, but when put in air, the gene is in activated, preventing root branching. The research has identified the certain protein which can inactivate root branching.
Professor Sadanandom explained: "This is hugely exciting as it opens up the possibility for us to help develop plants that could continue to branch roots even in challenging conditions such as the absence of water.'
Professor Bennett concluded: "Water is the key to plant growth, development and their survival. By studying how plant roots change their branching in response(回应)to water availability, we have uncovered a new mechanism. This opens the way to develop new crops better adapted to climate change and to help deliver global food safety."
It is absolutely imperative to ensure food safety worldwide. Crop production must double by 2050 to keep pace with global population growth. This target is even more challenging considering the effect of climate change on water availability. In this case, developing crops with better ability to acquire water would provide a solution.
【1】The findings of the research may have a positive effect on several global issues EXCEPT
A.ensuring food safety B.preserving the agriculture
C.solving the absence of water D.increasing crop production
【2】With the help of the findings, plants may be able to ________.
A.take in more nutrients B.change inactivated roots
C.grow in challenging conditions D.branch out without a special gene.
【3】Which of the following best explains “imperative" in the last paragraph?
A.effective. B.hopeful.
C.impractical. D.urgent.
【4】What is the new mechanism mentioned by Professor Bennett?
A.How a branching master gene responds to a particular nutrient.
B.How plant roots change their shape according to the soil moisture.
C.Why plants have different abilities to adapt to soil moisture conditions.
D.How the certain protein in activates root branching when accessible to water.
28、 When temperatures rise, many people swim to beat the heat. But swimming does a lot more than that. It is a great workout for the whole body. Health experts at the University of California, Berkeley state that swimming is a great way to stay in shape.
Swimming is a very good high-intensity cardio exercise (高度有氧运动). Cardio involves the heart, lungs, and circulatory(血液循环的) system. The Berkeley experts say swimming can increase your heart rate and exercise your lungs. Some high-intensity cardio exercises, such as running, can improve your health but can also be likely to hurt your body. Swimming, on the other hand, is beneficial to the body and people often use it to recover from injuries.
Paul Waas, a coach and former competitive swimmer, says that swimming is more beneficial to the body than other sports because it is low-impact. A mother called Paloma with two daughters says that for her girls, swimming has been more beneficial to the body than some other sports. She said, “So far, I think it’s been good for their bodies. It’s a high-intensity cardio exercise, as you know. But it spares their knees, their joints, and so on. So it’s rare to get injured in swimming.”
The coach adds that swimming is a great exercise for kids who grow a lot in a short amount of time. Coach Waas said, “Swimming is really good for kids who are growing fast. Their bones might be hurting and they’re suffering from serious pain all the time. And then they get in the pool and, you know, they can float and stretch out a little bit and it reduces that as well.”
People who are overweight can also find relief through swimming. Their weightlessness in the water can help them to avoid injury as they exercise.
【1】According to Paragraph 2,swimming is better than running because
A.it’s a bit easier to do B.it’s better and safer for our bodies
C.it makes people feel more comfortable D.it increases our heart rates more slowly
【2】What’s Paul Waas’s attitude towards swimming?
A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Doubtful D.Worried
【3】What does the underlined word that in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Floating and stretching out. B.Fast physical growth of kids.
C.Swimming in a swimming pool. D.The pain caused by kids’ physical growth.
29、The secret to work-life balance will differ depending on your field of work, family structure and finances. 【1】 Understanding the work-life truths will help you find your own work-life balance — and then keep it. Let’s get started!
Look inside yourself.
The first step to finding work-life balance is to look inside yourself and admit the mixed feelings you may have about working or being a mother or the other roles that are influencing your schedule. 【2】 Now’s the time to let go of those bad feelings — and perhaps also the people who bring out those feelings in you.
【3】
The next important stage of work-life balance is to be honest when looking at your employment situation. Are you in a field where work-life is discounted as impossible? Does your employer have unrealistic demands? It might be smart to explore working elsewhere, move to a more family-friendly employer or simply negotiate a better schedule.
Let go and say no.
You must prioritize to be successful as a working parent. 【4】 So instead, pick out the most important tasks for you to do, choose someone to do some other things and let the rest go. Your children will survive their childhood without homemade cupcakes for every birthday or a hot lunch sent to school every day.
【5】
Possibly the most important thing of work-life balance is to make the most of the time that you do have with your family and friends. Don’t waste those valuable moments feeling guilty or worrying about work projects that you can’t control. Live every moment to the fullest!
A.Enjoy your life.
B.Rethink your work situation.
C.Make the most of your job.
D.Are you filled with guilt or self-pity?
