二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、As the school year barely starts in Denver, French teacher Melanie is filled with worry that her students are always absent-minded. Yet, the problem isn’t messaging, enjoying video games or delivering notes. Surprisingly, the problem is about the ongoing heat wave in Denver.

“Today was a little bit hot, so I noticed kids were very sleepy and they were having to get up to drink water quite often.” said Melanie, who works at Denver’s East High School. “If you lose too much water, and you have to keep going to the water fountain, that can take away from their classroom experience.” While nodding off in class on a warm day may seem acceptable for the average teen, Melanie’s observation carries a bigger consequence than dry lips.

“There have been quite a few media reports about teachers noticing that students weren’t able to focus on hotter days,” said R Jisung Park, a researcher, “Does a hotter climate during the school year actually affect the rate of learning?” The drops in academic achievement couldn’t be explained by hotter weekends or hotter summers, but the trend was connected to higher temperatures on school days alone.

The connection between lost learning and a greater number of hot days is one more example of how climate change is already affecting our lives — and it’s an alarm bell for what we stand to lose in the future. Humans still have time to lessen the worst consequences of continued global warming. Without the unlikely important changes in the next 10 years, the globe will be trapped in an unavoidable era of heat waves that were unprecedented (前所未有的) for human beings.

【1】What may cause students absent-minded according to the text?

    A.Video games.

    B.Text messages.

    C.Heat waves.

    D.Classroom notes.

【2】What can be inferred from the second paragraph?

A.Kids often go to the water fountain for lack of water.

B.Extreme heat may lower a kid’s ability to learn.

C.Nodding off in class is a sign of respecting teachers.

D.Kids are more interested in drinking water than sleeping.

【3】How does the author feel about dealing with the future global warming?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Uncertain.

    C.Worried.

    D.Indifferent.

【4】What does the text mainly talk about?

A.The way that global warming continues.

B.The reasons why kids are absent-minded in class.

C.The hotter it grows, the more focused kids become.

D.The hotter it grows, the harder it will be for kids to learn.

  • 27、   [1] In 1856, a British survey team measured the height of Qomolangma with the result of 8,840 meters above sea level. However, the exact measurement has never been settled. In 1955, the figure was adjusted by an Indian survey team to 8,848 meters, and later to 8,850 meters according to a US team in 1999. And in 2005, a Chinese team gained a height of 8,844 meters, but that result wasn't widely accepted either.

[2] On May 6, 2020, a 30-member Chinese survey team, equipped with the latest technology, including a Global Navigation Satellite System receiver and a radar to measure the mountain's snow cap, is determined to settle the dispute (争议).

[3] But measuring Qomolangma is no easy task. The average air temperature there is -29 and hurricane-like winds blow all the time. According to Li Guopeng, leader of the No.1 Geodetic Survey Team of China's Ministry of Natural Resources, despite advanced technologies we now have — the likes of robots and drones — it’s uncertain that they can operate smoothly under extreme conditions, which is why sending human experts to the peak is still necessary to ensure a precise reading.

    [4] But ______

[5] The truth is that measuring the height of Qomolangma is much more than just getting that one particular number. Mount Qomolangma is the perfect window for observing crustal (地壳的) movements. Tiny changes to the peak's height can indicate whether the two plates, the Eurasian plate and the Indian plate, are heading toward or away from each other. The survey team will also get firsthand information about the condition of the snow and other natural materials at the top, which could be an indicator of climate change on the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau.

[6] It might be true that settling a dispute was the driving force for continued exploration, but the good thing is that we always end up discovering so much more.

1What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?

A.The importance of Qomolangma. B.The dispute of Qomolangma’s height.

C.The difficulty in measuring Qomolangma. D.The change of Qomolangma’s height.

2What does Li Guopeng think of the new devices they carried?

A.They can read and deal with the results precisely.

B.They might break down under unusual conditions.

C.They are the latest advanced technology in the world.

D.They will work properly without human’s instructions.

3Which of the following is best for the blank in the text?

A.what is the process of China’s measurement?

B.how is the latest technology used for the research?

C.does a tiny difference really matter for a huge mountain?

D.do extreme conditions actually affect the measurement?

4What is to be discovered through the exact height of Qomolangma?

A.The depth of snowcap. B.The diversity of natural materials.

C.The state of crustal movements. D.The change of worldwide climate.

5What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To recommend a good way to settle a dispute.

B.To show the history of measuring Qomolangma.

C.To advertise China’s latest advanced technology.

D.To stress the value of China’s latest exploration in Qomolangma.

  • 28、   Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none — that’s because all of Jim’s art is created on an unusual canvas(画布)— the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.

Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has traveled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.

Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven’t changed — All he needs is a stick, a garden rake (耙子)and most importantly, his lively imagination!

Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, looking for perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world’s largest freelance (自由职业的)drawing, was created in the desert sand of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain, wash his paintings away.

Jim’s art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named “Sandman” in 2015. Jim Denevan is not just about art in the sand — he is also an excellent chef and founder of an organization called “Outstanding in the Field”, whose mottois to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced.

1What do we know about Denevan?

    A. He used to be a chef.

    B. He has a talent for creating sand art.

    C. He puts his work on show regularly.

    D. He showed artistic talents at a very young age.

2It can be learnt from the passage that ___________.

    A. Denevan walks a lot to complete his work

    B. it is not hard for Denevan to find suitable sand to draw on

    C. it usually takes long for the storm to destroy Denevan’s work

    D. Denevan is very particular about his drawing tools.

3Which of the following can best describe Denevan?

    A. Generous. B. Kind-hearted. C. Imaginative. D. Traditional.

4What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. Denevan loses his interest in art soon.

    B. Denevan is also popular as a chef.

    C. Being a happy chef is Denevan’s final goal in life.

    D. Denevan’s fame helps him with his chef job.

  • 29、The baggy yellow shirt had long sleeves and four extra-large pockets. It was faded (褪色) from years of wear, but still in good shape. I found it in 1963 when I was home from college on Christmas break, looking through bags of clothes Mom planned to give away. Seeing me packing the yellow shirt, Mom said, “I wore that when I was pregnant (怀孕) with your brother in 1954!”

“It’s just the thing to wear over my clothes during art class, Mom. Thanks!” Then I put it into my suitcase. The yellow shirt became a part of my college wardrobe (衣橱). I loved it. After graduation, I wore the shirt the day I moved into my new apartment and on Saturday mornings when I cleaned.

The next year, I married. When I became pregnant, I wore the yellow shirt. I missed Mom and the rest of my family, since we were in Colorado and they were in Illinois. But that shirt helped. I smiled, remembering that Mother had worn it. That Christmas, I repaired one sleeve, packed it in holiday paper and sent it to Mom. When Mom wrote to thank me for her real gifts, she said the yellow shirt was lovely.

The next year, my husband, daughter and I stopped at Mom and Dad’s to pick up some furniture. Days later, at the kitchen table, I noticed something yellow tied to its bottom. The shirt! And so the pattern was set. On our next visit home, I secretly placed the shirt under Mom and Dad’s mattress (床垫). I don’t know how long it took for her to find it, but almost two years passed before I discovered it under the base of our living-room floor lamp. The yellow shirt was just what I needed now while refinishing (重新整修) furniture.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

NASA is on a journey to Mars, with a goal of sending humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s. That journey is already well under way.

For decades, the agency and its partners have sent orbiters, landers and rovers(探测器), 1 increasing our knowledge about the Red Planet and paving the way for future human explorers. The Curiosity rover has gathered radiation data to help us protect future astronauts, and the upcoming Mars 2020 rover will study the 2 of Martian resources, including oxygen.

Building on the robotic legacy(遗产), the human exploration of Mars crosses three thresholds(门槛), each with 3 challenges as humans move farther from Earth: Earth Reliant, the Proving Ground, and Earth Independent.

Earth Reliant explorations is 4 on research aboard the International Space Station. The orbiting microgravity laboratory serves as a world - class test bed for the technologies and communications systems needed for human missions to deep space. Astronauts are learning about what it takes to live and work in space for long periods of time, improving our understanding of how the body changes in space and how to protect astronauts' health.

Next, we move into the Proving Ground, 5 a series of missions near the moon called “cislunar space” to test the capabilities we will need to live and work at Mars. Astronauts on the space station are only hours away from Earth, but the proving ground is days away, a(n) 6 stepping stone to a Mars mission, which will be months away from home.

Also in the 2020s, we’ll send astronauts on a year-long mission into this deep space proving ground, confirming habitation and testing our 7 for Mars.

Finally, we become Earth Independent, building on the knowledge 8 on the space station and in deep space to send humans to low-Mars orbit in the early 2030s.

This phase will also test the entry, descent(降落)and landing techniques needed to get to the Martin surface and study what's needed for in-situ resource utilization or "living off the land". NASA is already studying the 9 "Exploration Zones" on Mars that would offer compelling science research and provide resources our astronauts can use.

There are challenges to 10 Mars, but we know they are solvable. We are well on our way to getting there, landing there, and living there.
