26、 If you ask people to name one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare” “Samuel Johnson” and “Webster”, but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn’t even speak English - William the Conqueror.
Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain lived people belonging to two major language groups. In the westcentral region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scots, whose language, though not the same as Welsh, was also Celtic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, Saxons, and other Germanic and Nordic peoples, who spoke what we now call AngloSaxon (or Old English), a Germanic language. If this state of affairs had lasted, English today would have been close to German.
But this state of affairs did not last. In 1066 the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England. For about a century, French became the official language of England while Old English became the language of peasants. As a result, English words of politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even shows a distinction between upperclass French and lowerclass AngloSaxon in its words. We even have different words for some foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing farming, while the upperclass Normans were doing most of eating.
When Americans visit Europe for the first time, they usually find Germany more “foreign” than France because the German they see on signs and advertisements seems much more different from English than French does. Few realize that the English language is actually Germanic at its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of the man’s ambition (野心).
【1】The two major languages spoken in what is now called Great Britain before 1066 were ____.
A.Welsh and Scottish B.Nordic and Germanic
C.Celtic and Old English D.AngloSaxon and Germanic
【2】Which of the following groups of words is, by inference, rooted in French?
A.president, lawyer, beef B.president, bread, water

【3】Why does French appear less foreign than German to Americans on their first visit to Europe?
A.Many French words are similar to English ones.
B.They know little of the history of the English language.
C.Most advertisements in France appear in English.
D.They know French better than German.
27、A new study, a project of the researchers from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, finds the fitness tracker probably does not help with weight loss.
The devices are designed to record your physical activity. They are usually worn around the wrist, where they measure a person’s heart rate. The research team looked at two groups of individuals. The first wore a fitness tracker and took part in health counseling (咨询) with experts to consider the best weight-loss plan. The researchers compared this group with people who only got health counseling.
The study found that those only speaking with the health experts lost nearly 6 kilograms, but those using a fitness tracker lost only 3.5 kilograms. John Jakicic, the lead researcher, questioned the use of electronic devices for weight control in place of “effective behavioral counseling for physical activity and diet. ”
The study involved 470 subjects aged between 18 and 35. Some of them were overweight, while others were considered obese (肥胖的). Over three fourths of the subjects were women. All the subjects were told to increase physical activity and start on a low-calorie diet. They had their weight measured once every six months. After six months, researchers divided the group into two parts: one continued with monthly counseling, while members of the other group were given a fitness tracker. Eighteen months later, both groups “showed significant improvements in fitness, physical activity, and diet,” with no major difference between groups. However, when it came to losing weight, the people who only spoke with experts lost nearly twice as much weight.
Jakicic said, “the study’s findings are important because effective long-term treatments are needed to address America’s obesity. ” More information is needed, he added, to learn how to best use these devices to change “physical activity and diet behaviors” in adults who want to lose weight.
【1】All the subjects in the study were asked to ________.
A.start on a high-calorie diet
B.wear a fitness tracker
C.increase physical activities
D.record their heart rates
【2】Why does Jakicic think the findings are important?
A.Wearing fitness trackers hardly helps people lose weight.
B.Physical activity and diet have no effect on weight loss.
C.Handling obesity requires effective long-term treatments.
D.There are great differences in fitness between both groups.
【3】What can we infer about the study mentioned in the text?
A.The study went on for about two years.
B.More than 120 men took part in the study.
C.Health counseling helps lose almost 6 kilograms.
D.Wearing a fitness tracker is useful for keeping slim.
【4】The purpose of the text is to ________.
A.describe how the researchers were conducting the study
B.indicate regular counseling for weight control is necessary
C.convince readers to wear fitness trackers for weight control
D.warn women are more likely to suffer from weight problems
28、 The design of a building influences the performance of the people working and studying in it. Schools are no exception. There are two main features that would make for the ideal school building: classrooms with impressive views, and carefully planned seating arrangements.
It has been shown that concentration and mental acuity actually improve when people allow their gaze to wander. Varied visual stimuli(刺激) helps the mind to absorb information on a deeper level, in much the same way that dreaming during sleep strengthens memory formation and data storage in the brain. Moreover, a pleasant view can improve students’ mood, making learning easy. Classrooms with large windows and expansive views therefore make perfect sense.
Like this concept of a “classroom with a view”, the idea of alternative classroom seating arrangements might appear somewhat unusual, yet adding this feature into the design of school buildings could have significant benefits. The traditional image of4students sitting listlessly(无精打采) in rows of desks, staring blankly at the front of the classroom, where a teacher struggles to keep their attention from drifting while lecturing about some dry mathematical phenomenon, is all too familiar. Imagine, however, a math class with groups of students gathered around separate tables, cagerly engaged in examining a real-life math problem and sharing their ideas. Instead of strictly arranged rows of desks, the ideal classroom should have a variety of more relaxed furniture arrangements, which contribute to different kinds of classroom activity and interaction.
Intelligent companies have already adopted more up-to-date design concepts into their workshops, in order to ensure employees can work to the best of their abilities. Schools should follow suit, in order to enrich students’ learning experiences.
【1】Why does the author mention dreaming in Paragraph 2?
A.To show the harm of daydreaming.
B.To stress the importance of a good sleep.
C.To prove the benefits of impressive window views.
D.To explain the phenomenon of sleeping during the class.
【2】According to the author, seating arrangements should enable students to_______.
A.communicate better with each other.
B.relax during a stressful examination.
C.listen more closely to the teacher.
D.clean the classroom easily2.
【3】What does the underlined phrase “follow suit” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Set an example.
B.Be an exception.
C.Do the same thing.
D.Come up with new ideas.
