二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Until now, much of the effort in search for life on the other planets has been on finding liquid water, because most of the extremely important chemical reactions that happen in plants and animals can only take place in the presence of water. And water is very common. In fact, the elements (元素) that make water (hydrogen and oxygen) are the first and third richest chemicals in the universe. This means that we can find water almost everywhere we look, from the surface of planets in our Solar System to the depths of space.

But for life as we know it to exist, it needs a planet where water exists in a liquid state, or its cells (细胞) would freeze or boil away. Earth is the only known planet that stays in a perfect position from our Sun to support water in a liquid state. Astronomers call this perfect distance from a star the “habitable (宜居的)” or “Goldilocks zone”.

Scientists last year discovered that there is liquid water on the Mars, which made a lot of people very excited since finding a world within a star’s habitable zone where liquid water can exist would be a great start to finding life.

Water is also found on the Mercury, and there are vast water oceans on some of Jupiter’s and Saturn’s moons. But we still haven’t found life on the Mars, or any other planet in our Solar System.

Therefore, finding liquid water isn’t enough. We still need to be able to detect other conditions that support life forms (scientists call them “biosignatures”). For example, we have to look into a planet’s atmosphere and see what gasses are in it. If we find a planet with lots of oxygen, we have one more evidence to support the idea that there may be life there. Unfortunately, at the moment, it is not possible for us to detect the biosignatures on Earth-like planets beyond Mars. We have not perfected the technology to do it yet.

1What can we know about the planets in the so-called “Goldilocks zone”?

A.They are very cold. B.They are extremely hot.

C.Life might be found on them. D.Water is not common there.

2Where have the scientists found liquid water?

A.On the Saturn. B.On the Mars.

C.On the Jupiter. D.On the Moon

3What does the author mean in the last paragraph?

A.There is no life form on the other planets.

B.It is impossible for us to detect the other biosignatures.

C.Liquid water is extremely important for plants and animals.

D.We still have a long way to go to find life beyond the Mars.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.The conditions for a livable planet.

B.The importance of liquid water to life.

C.The latest discovery about livable planets.

D.The exploration of life forms on the Mars.

    Basic Table Manners

Take a moment to study some table manners before all of the company dinners and formal dinners with your relatives.  Even if you've heard these rules before, a quick refresher course will help you feel confident and in control before eating with your boss or aunt.

Here's how to mind your manners at the dinner table:

    First things first:

Mind the little details--you've heard them all before.  Respond to invitations in a timely I manner; remember that it's always better to be overdressed; be fashionably on time; bring a gift for your host or hostess; and remember to silence your phone and keep it out of sight.

    After you sit down:

The first thing you should do is place your napkin in your lap.  Leave it there until the end of the meal, or until you excuse yourself from the table.  There's some debate about what to do with your napkin when you get up, but the most common practice is to place it on your seat until you return.  If you're worried that your napkin has food on it that could stain the scat or your clothes when you sit back down, place it to the left of your plate instead.

    Bread plate and drink

When in doubtlook to your hands. With your palms(手掌)facing each otherconnect the tip of each forefinger with your thumb. You'll see that your left hand will form a “b"and your right handa “d”. These stand for "bread" and “drink"which you will find to your left and to your rightrespectively.

What to do with the utensils(餐具):

Your safest bet is to start from the outside-the utensils farthest from your plate-and move inward as the meal progresses. Howeverdessert utensils may also be found above your plate.

1Where could you place your napkin when you get up from the table?

    A. Under your plate. B. On your plate.

    C. To the left of your plate. D. Over the back of your chair.

2_________________ is (are) normally put to your right side on the table.

    A. Drink B. Napkin.

    C. Dessert utensils D. Bread plate

  • 28、   I’m a New York City firefighter. Every day, I see terror — sometimes even death. But the day I found Scarlett was different. That day I saw life. And love.

We were responding to a call about a burning garage. Outside, I heard the sound of cats crying. I couldn’t stop — I would have to look for the cats after the fire was put out.

It took a long time to finally bring the big fire under control, but we did it. No one inside was hurt.

At that point I was free to investigate the cat noises. There was still a lot of smoke and heat coming from the building. I followed the meowing (猫叫) to a spot. There, crying and huddled (挤作一团) together, were five terrified kittens.

I wanted to find the mother. It was obvious that she had gone into the burning garage and carried out all of her babies, one by one — unbelievable.

We finally found her. She was badly burnt. She could barely move. I picked her up, and she relaxed in my arms. Sensing her trust, I shed a tear. I was determined to save this brave little cat and her family.

About a week later, I found out she was going to live. One of the technicians suggested we name her Scarlett, because of her reddened skin.

Knowing what Scarlett endured (忍受) for her kittens, it melted my heart to see her reunited with them. She touched each of them again, nose to nose, to make sure they were all safe. She had risked her life five separate times — and it had paid off. All of her babies had survived.

As a firefighter, I see heroism (英雄事迹) every day. But what Scarlett showed me that day was the kind of bravery that can only come from a mother’s love.

1Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?

A.The author went to rescue the cats as soon as he heard them crying.

B.The firefighters put out the big fire quickly and no one was hurt.

C.The mother cat moved all of her five babies to a safer place despite the fire.

D.The author didn’t find the cats until the smoke and heat were gone.

2Why was the author determined to save the cats?

A.He refused to watch someone else die in his work.

B.He was impressed by the mother’s strong love and courage.

C.The cat’s story had made many people concerned.

D.It had taken much time and effort for him to save them.

3Which best describes the author’s tone in the article?

    A.Objective. B.Admiring.

    C.Excited. D.Optimistic.

  • 29、Those who work on the “996” model (where employees work from 9am to 9pm, 6 days a week) must envy their counterparts (对应的人)in an American company, because they have a shorter work week. Basecamp, a Chicago-based web application company gives all his employees a short work week: just four days—a total of 32 hours, between May and September every year. Also, they usually work five days a week for the rest of the year.

“That’s plenty of time to get great work done. This is all we expect and all we want from people,” says Jason Fried, a co-founder. “Working 60-plus, or 70-plus hours is unnecessary. In fact, if you have to work 60-plus or 70-plus hours a week, there’s a management problem.”

The company’s summer workload must fit reduced hours, Mr. Fried insists, otherwise the benefits of a shorter week - to recover from work, enjoy time with family and develop outside interests - would be undone.

His new research finds that it is not just long hours that are harmful to employees’ physical and mental health. It is also the intensity (强度)of work. Moreover, it suggests that intensity work harms career prospects (前景).That is because unbearable hours and intensity are in the opposite direction, reducing the quality of the work.

The research concludes that the level of intensity we apply to the work we do is generally “a stronger predictor of unfavorable outcomes than overtime work”. The research compared people of similar jobs and education levels, and found they were more likely to suffer poorer happiness and worse career prospects, including satisfaction, security and promotion, when they worked at an intense level for long periods.

【1】What do we know about Basecamp’s four — day work week?

A.It lasts nearly half a year.

B.The work pressure is too high.

    C.There are some management problems.

D.Employees work more than 8 hours a day.

【2】What does Mr. Fried intend to say in paragraph 2?

A.Given plenty of time, people can do more.

B.To get work done well needs plenty of time.

C.People can do a job very well in a short work week.

D.A long work week is appropriate for reduced workload.

【3】What does the research mentioned in the text want to tell us?

    A.Getting much more rest.

    B.Improving work quality.

    C.Refusing a five-day work week.

    D.Avoiding working too intensely.

【4】What can be the best title for this passage?

    A.More Work, More Profits

    B.Shorter Week, Better Reward

    C.Less Work, Less Benefits

    D.Longer Hours, Higher Intensity

  • 30、I have just finished my 23rd year of teaching at universities. And there have been several ______ in the way students approach their classes. The most noticeable is that when I started teaching, students took notes in notebooks, but now every desk has a laptop on it when I give a lecture.

There seem to be a lot of obvious ______ of taking notes on a computer. For one it is easy to save the notes in a place where you can ______ them later. For another, you will be able to read your notes late especially if your handwriting is poor.

Before we go out and encourage every student to bring a laptop to class, ______ , it is worth checking out a study by Pam Mueller and Danny Oppenheimer. They compared college students' ______ in tests following exposure to material. The students were assigned either to take notes by hand or using a laptop.

In the first study, students took notes while watching a lecture. Then, they engaged in other activities for about 30 minutes. Finally, they were given a quiz about the lecture. The quiz contained factual questions as well as conceptual questions that required some ______ of the subject matter Students did about equally well on the factual question ______ how they took notes. However, the students did much ______ on the conceptual questions when they took notes by hand than when they took them using the laptop.

The experiments ______ the content of people's notes to the lecture and found that when people typed their notes on a laptop, they were much more likely to ______ what people said directly rather than writing their impressions of it. That is, people writing out their notes had to think more ______ about the content of what they heard than those people who were just typing.

Then, in the second study, the experiments told people using the laptops to take good notes rather than just taking down what they heard. Even when people were given these ______ , they still had a greater tendency to type what they heard than people who were taking notes by hand. As before, the people who used the laptops did more poorly on a test of ______ knowledge than those who took notes by hand.

So there is real value in having to ______ the material in the process of taking notes. It is because handwriting is slow and ______ that people have to think more clearly about what they want to write down rather than copying down what is being said.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 1. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 2 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.

Is there really much truth behind this science of 3 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 4 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.

    Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.

Each micro-expression is unique to 5 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.

    A liar refuses eye contact.

People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 6 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 7of sadness and few people can make this 8 expression, so it is actually never faked.

    Guilty knowledge technique is 9.

Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)10. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When Ryan first turned up for Ms. Rose's class, he was kind of nervous because he'd heard Ms. Rose could be a real monster sometimes. But as Ms. Rose started with an overview of what they'd be doing during the year in a pleasant voice, she looked nice enough. Then with a more serious tone, she warned the students that she'd be giving them homework assignments, which were not to be handed in late, and they were to be completed fully. "No excuses! No extensions!”

That day she assigned the class its first homework. They had to do a sheet of math problems and read a short story.  It wasn't due until Thursday, but she suggested they do it immediately that night. "Homework has a way of piling up, "she said, her eyes narrowing slightly. But today was only Monday! There was plenty of time, Ryan thought.

So when school was over, Ryan and his friends ran off to play baseball. Exhausted after the game, he entertained himself with his favorite TV show, leaving his homework aside on his desk. Days passed quickly. Ryan was free of worries most of the time, while Ms. Rose just occasionally reminded them of the deadline, and that she wouldn't tolerate anyone not having done it.

Wednesday, after dinner, he suddenly realized that his homework was due next day. He raced to his desk and was greeted with the most curious thing. The pile of homework really had grown taller. Oh no! What was he going to do? It looked as if the papers had towered over him, almost soaring up to the ceiling.

He really needed to get started. He did a lite bit here and there, but he kept getting distracted by other work waiting for him. Finally, he couldn't even locate the homework he'd started with. Frustrated, he gave up and went to bed.  Ryan tossed and turned all night and had bad dreams of paper mountains burying him alive.

The next morning, when Ryan entered the classroom, he found Ms. Rose waiting, her faced dark with rage.  Obviously, Ryan wasn't the only one who suffered from the mysteriously growing assignments.
