  • 26、   NextFest is an unusual exhibition where you can meet the most creative minds and discover new technology from around the world and see the things that will change the way we live, work and play in the future. For example,......

Brainball is a computer game with a difference: if you’re too competitive, you'll lose. The more relaxed you are, the better you play. Brainball measures your brainwaves and the person who is the most relaxed can push the ball to the other side and win. I’m sure it will be a popular game with yoga teachers and nervous parents everywhere.

If you’re interested in fashion, NexlFest can show you the clothes of the future—cloth which you can change by downloading styles from the web, clothes which look after your health and a biometric(生物测量的) suit which watches over your body and gives you medicine when you need it.

Another hit is a humanoid(类人的) robot which can walk, turn, climb up and down stairs—and even dance. Asimo copies human movement and is friendly-looking. Its maker, Honda, believes it will be a big help to blind or elderly people and to those who can’t get out of bed.

The Skyear looks as if it could only appear in a Hollywood film. It certainly lives up to its name: it can fly. It can climb at more than 2.000 metres a minute and reach a speed of 365 mph. If you want one, it will cost you about $500,000!

If you want to see the future, come to NexiFest. It’s open all this whole week at the State Science Exhibition Centre.

1What should you do if you want to win a game of Brainball?

    A.Keep a cool head. B.Be strong enough.

    C.Have a creative mind D.Be highly competitive.

2What is Asimo designed to do?

    A.Direct human movement. B.Look after human’s health.

C.Give patients medical treatment. D.Help the elderly and the disabled.

3What can we learn about NextFest?

A.It lasts five days. B.It is held by Honda.

C.It is related to technology. D.It sells clothes and medicine.

  • 27、What do you do when you have a problem? Would you ask a crowd of strangers for a solution? It may sound strange, but it has encouraged this successful innovation (创新). That's the thinking behind a challenge prize.

Challenge prizes come in many shapes and sizes but the basic concept (观念) remains the same. Rather than paying an expert to work out a solution, you offer the prize to anyone who believes they can solve it and presented the first to do so with a prize. Many would argue, “who is better qualified (有资格的) than an expert”. But actually, not using an expert will result in a great deal of thinking outside of the box.

Some argue that formal education can kill creativity, because it sometimes only teaches a single method to achieve the task. Similarly, some suggests that experts can have the same problem. “If we set up a challenge prize, the ‘experts’ that come to compete in it may tell us it can't be done,” says Marcus Shingles, the former CEO of the XPRIZE Foundation.

There are other advantages too. “You are not asking people to use a particular solution set on how to solve that problems. So you get the large amount of diversity,” adds Shingles. And because the crowd acts like a think tank (智囊团). Various thinking can throw up issues that may have been overlooked (忽视).

However, there are dangerous connected to challenge prizes. “You don't want to be creating a challenge prize which inspires people to solve a problem where there is no demand,” says Tris Dyson, the Executive Director of Nesta’s Center for Challenge prizes. This happened in 1979 when a prize of £100,000 was claimed by the first person to fly under human power across the English Channel. Despite its success, it has not led to the adoption of human powered flight as a form of travel. And of course, there are those who invest their personal time and money only to see no return at all.

The pros and cons of challenge prizes affect both problems-setters and problem-solvers. But they don't seem to be going out of style anytime soon. To many, the challenge to innovate and the attraction of the prize are too much to resist (抵制). And there is no solution for that.

【1】What is the basic concept behind a challenging prize?

A.Rewarding the first one to solve a challenging problem.

B.Competing with the experts to get a particular solution.

C.Challenging the formal education that kills creativity.

D.Picking out someone more qualified than experts.

【2】According to Marcus Shingles, what can be the problem with experts?

A.Overlooking possible details about a problem.

B.The lack of connection on practical innovations.

C.Failure to find a solution due to habitual thinking.

D.Overconfidence in finding a best solution.

【3】What is the potential danger of challenge prizes?

A.Prizes received no return in terms of practical use.

B.The money shortage prevents the adoption of innovations.

C.Innovations are likely to go out of date in a short time.

D.The attraction of prize money is hard to resist.

【4】Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

    A.Arguments for formal education.

    B.The problem-solving prizes.

    C.Dangers connected with challenge prizes.

    D.The attraction of innovation.

  • 28、In her 17 years on this earth, Shreyaa Venkat has done more to help the planet and the people living on it than many adults. The non-profit organization she founded, NEST4US, has helped tens of thousands of people in the United States. Through it, it’s served over 12,000 homeless people in the Washington, D.C. area by providing food and other supplies.

Venkat’s passion for helping others started as soon as she could walk, as her parents, active volunteers themselves, brought her along on their various projects, like some creative ways to volunteer. By fifth grade, she’d developed such enthusiasm for it that she started organizing her own service projects in her community.

NEST4US was born when she realized how much food waste there is, how many hungry people there are, and how simple it would be to use the former to help the latter. “There was a homeless man standing on a corner in D.C. and he was holding a sign that said ‘Hungry Need Food’,” she recalls. “So I gave him my lunch and his whole face just lit up. It was so easy, it only took me 30 seconds, and it really helped him.”

As NEST4US took off, with hundreds of volunteers helping to feed thousands of hungry people, Venkat decided to branch out with her volunteer efforts, starting three other branches of NEST4US. Serving others had become such a way of life for her that she even celebrated her 13th birthday at a homeless shelter, bringing the party to them instead of expecting gifts for herself.

As much as she has helped others, they’ve helped her too. Not only does she get a lot of joy and personal satisfaction from her volunteer work but running NEST4US has taught her important life skills like time management, public speaking, writing, and leadership. “What it’s really given me is this opinion of putting other people first,” she says.

【1】What can we infer about NEST4US from the first paragraph?

A.Its main aim is to make money.

    B.It offers people cheap supplies.

C.It takes in all homeless people.

    D.It is a charity organization.

【2】What caused Venkat to set up NEST4US?

    A.Her parents’ constant suggestion.

B.The memory of her hard childhood.

C.Her experience of helping a hungry man.

    D.Volunteers’ great influence on her.

【3】Why did Venkat spend her 13th birthday at a homeless shelter?

A.She held a grand party for many people.

B.She could receive many nice gifts there.

C.She got much personal satisfaction from it.

D.She saw helping others as part of her life.

【4】Which of the following best describes Shreyaa Venkat?

    A.Caring.

    B.Ambitious.

    C.Humorous.

    D.Demanding.

  • 29、It was a cold Saturday night in February. Some 200 New Yorkers carefully made their way to the reservoir (水库) in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the magical snowy owl, who had touched down in the park the week before in what was reported as the first visit there by the species in more than 130 years.

Except for a few excited screams from children, people were quiet—patiently awaiting the owl’s arrival at the reservoir’s north gatehouse. The snowy owl did not disappoint. She flew down from the darkness and surveyed the water and the people holding phones and cameras before taking off into the night to the applause of her many fans. They simply wanted to see this lovely creature whose improbable appearance seemed to signify hope after the lockdown

New Yorkers who had long taken Central Park for granted felt a renewed love for this rectangle of green in the heart of the big city and, of course, its amazing wildlife. That the park is a beautiful and essential refuge is something that humans have only come to fully appreciate during these recent times of uncertainty.

Central Park was originally planned and constructed during another difficult time in the nation’s history—in the years before and during the American Civil War. Unlike many European parks that had originally been built for the aristocracy (贵族), Central Park was designed as a public space. In its chief architect Frederick Law Olmsted’s words, the poor and rich alike could “easily go there after their day’s work is done” and “stroll for an hour, seeing, hearing, and feeling nothing of the noise of the streets.”

As spring turns into summer, we see people sitting on the grass or benches—catching some sun, having family picnics, or tapping away on their laptops and iPads. Just being in proximity to other people in Central Park gave us a sense of community—the sense that we would somehow persevere.

【1】What did people do in Central Park on that Saturday night?

    A.They cheered for each other

    B.They paid their first visit

C.They came for a rare sight

    D.They appreciated a water event

    A.Find Refuge in Central Park
