26、We all have them in our lives—Ms. Late and Mr. Early. They live among us just to try our patience. They can’t seem to get out of their own way and arrive on time. It’s a problem, and they know it, but that’s how they roll.
I’ve ever been in the room with my bestie Tinkerbell and said, “It’s time to go.” She agreed. Then, she turned around and ordered a T-shirt she had seen online, checked her email, folded her laundry and searched for her purse while I was waiting by the door.
But as exasperating as it is to have Ms. Late in your life, it’s equally painful to have Mr. Early.
My husband Hubby is in this category. He will time things to the minute. “The movie is at four. We have five stops to make before that, so estimating 15 to 20 minutes per stop, not counting traffic or unforeseen circumstances like a flat tire, we should leave after breakfast.”
Being too early or too late is a suffering, but it never seems to bother the person himself. It only affects the poor ones in their company who just do their best to show up when they’re supposed to.
I’d like to know how early in life this behaviour came into being. How does our internal clock leave one person unconcerned about time passing, and the other constantly aware of it? Look at my kids. My son is very laid back, and he didn’t arrive until nine days after his due date. My daughter, a spitfire (烈性子), arrived before her Christmas Day due date, so maybe it’s nature from the very beginning.
The one thing that does happen is that this behaviour has become part of the charm of the person you love. You can’t imagine Mr. Early ever being late or Ms. Late ever showing up early. As long as they show up.

27、 Do you think about overseas trip but worry that you might make a less-than-worthy choice because you can’t afford to visit all the places on your wish list before you make your final decision? However, little money doesn’t mean you have to stay at home. 【1】
Hug the simple joy with travel. 【2】 Or even climb to the top of a hill and watch the sun set over the ocean. The simple joy of being in a new place is just a matter of going some place new. No tour package required.
【3】 People need fresh air, exercise, creative excitement, a new relationship and so on. All of these things are simple to get and most of them are free. For fresh air, go outside. For exercise, go out for a jog. For creative excitement, go somewhere new, such as a neighbourhood near your accommodation or just a local market. For a new relationship, make friends with the locals. And you can get a better understanding of the native civilization.
Go slowly. If you live in New York and want to take a 2-week vacation to Africa, it will be very tough to travel with low cost. Time is not money. 【4】 Instead of buying a plane ticket, take a train or bus, or just hop your bike and ride away from the town. The slower you travel, the less money you will spend.
Try to get your accommodation for free or next-to-nothing. Find kind souls around the world who agree to offer an extra bedroom, sofa, or a corner of the floor to travelers in exchange for the same kindness when they visit your town. This plan involves trading homes for an agreed-on amount of time. 【5】

E.With a bit of creativity and some tricks, you can travel the world cheaply.
F.If you can do what needs to be done around the house, just stay inside for free.
G.It works best if your home is in a place someone wants to visit during your vacations.
28、 When I was a child, not many of us grew up with pets in Asia. It was unusual to show sympathy towards animals. We learnt respect for our elders and for our government, and we learnt etiquette( 礼仪)too, but rarely was it suggested that we extend any feelings towards animals, or indeed that animals have feelings. And because of this, many children in Asia grow up considering animals exist to serve us, feed us, entertain us and clothe us.
I co-founded ACT Asia in 2006 with an Asian vet, to support the development of caring societies in Asia. While many nonprofits were already addressing human, animal and environmental concerns with direct action, 1 felt the cultural shock between continents was too great to ignore. We had to accept that change would not happen immediately, and that intervening((干预)would cause defence. First, we have to help societies understand the interdependence of people, animals and our natural habitat. Instead of stepping in to find fault, we stepped back and considered the cause. Millions of people live below the poverty line, and most left-behind children live without their parents, so it was clear that our biggest barrier was ignorance, not cruelty.
With the future in mind, education is at the core of all we do. We should teach children about respect and kindness, and we see that a sense of responsibility is improving. By doing so, they are developing a keen sense of respect, to each other, for all species and our natural environment, but also for themselves. Given the chance to understand the truth about life on earth, many people-but children in particular-will choose compassion(同情)over cruelty.

A.They never kept pets.

D.They took it for granted that animals serve human.

A.To find the causes of poverty in Asia.
B.To appeal to people not to kill animals.
C.To improve Asian's sense of caring societies.
D.To help solve the culture shock between countries.
【3】What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A.Direct action of many nonprofits was efficient.
B.The change of caring societies would appear soon.
C.People, animals and our natural habitat exist together.
D.The biggest barrier of us was not ignorance but cruelty .
【4】What does the author think of present Asian children's sense of caring society?
A.It is hopeless. B.It is satisfying.
C.It is annoying. D.It is uncertain.
29、 It was dinner time for the Rangers, a group of mostly Indigenous (本地的) Australians who had spent a long day cleaning up the polluted beaches of the continent’s northern coast. Soon they would be eating freshly caught fish and seafood cooked under the stars on an open fire, as their ancestors did.
The Rangers are of more than 100 Indigenous groups spread across Australia who have taken on the job of protecting the land of their forefathers. In Arnhem Land, they are the protectors of 3,300 square miles of land and sea. They comb the beaches by hand, picking up as much rubbish as possible. The task is very difficult as each day it delivers waves of new rubbish.
For the Rangers, cleaning the beaches is more than a vacation. For a people whose culture is strongly tied to the land, protecting the environment is equal to preserving their history.
However, colonization forcefully broke their connection to the land generations ago. Indigenous people were displaced and their cultural practices outlawed. Tens of thousands of years of traditional land management ended, and as a result many parts of the country now face serious disasters from invasive plant and animal species, bush fires and land mismanagement.
In recent years, the government has restored more than 20 percent of Australia’s land to Indigenous owners. Since 2007,the Indigenous Rangers Organizations have been at work protecting this land.
Luck, one of the few non-Indigenous employees working with the Rangers, said the combination of old and new techniques and an appreciation for the culture of Indigenous workers has been critical to the program’s success.
“You are working with staff who see the world different to you, so there is a much higher focus on the cultural aspects of work and life,” he said.
“Being a ranger is a source of confidence. You feel strong,” said Terence, a senior ranger. “Here we still live on the land. The culture is still alive.”
【1】What did Indigenous Australians live on in the past?
A. Rubbish picked up by hand. B. Protecting the land.
C. Catching the fish and seafood. D. Invasive plants and animals.
【2】What do the Rangers think of cleaning the beaches?
A. It’s a job of their ancestors’. B. It’s just a vacation.
C. It’s a difficult task. D. It’s their culture.
【3】Why has the government restored the land to Indigenous owners?
A. The polluted land needs better management. B. Their cultural practices were outlawed.
C. The people were too strong. D. The land belongs to them.
【4】What can we learn from the last three paragraphs?
A. Not many employees are the Indigenous Australians.
B. Culture is important to the Indigenous Australians.
C. Their new techniques are successful.
D. Both Luck and Terence are rangers.
