26、 Ne Zha, the most successful film in the summer of 2019, has become the all-time highest-grossing (票房之冠) animation (动画) film in China. After the box-office success of Ne Zha, Yang Yu, the director of the film has risen to fame overnight.
Yang, who has himself struggled for more than 10 years in his career is somewhat of a real-life model for the main role in the film. Yang was born in a doctor’s family. As his parents thought a hospital job would be stable, Yang studied medicine in college. But his interest in animation changed his life. When most of his classmates chose to work as medical professionals after graduation, Yang stayed at home for three and a half years to make a short animation film. Yang recalls that period was like “living in a space station”, as his routine activities were limited in their small family apartment.
A turning point came in 2009, when Yang’s directorial debut (处女作), See Through, was quite a hit after it was released. The film got more than 30 awards at home and abroad.
The success inspired him to establish an animation studio in Chengdu, but in the following six years. Yang struggled to get help to fund an animation film. In 2014, Coloroom Pictures reached out to him for a film on the mythological (神话的) figure Ne Zha.
Hiring around 1,600 members from over 20 animation companies, the film took five years for production, with Ne Zha’s new screen image—a boy with ugly teeth and dark circles around his eyes. It was a big change because over the past 40 years, Ne Zha had been played by handsome actors in TV dramas and movies. “We wanted a breakthrough and wished to convey a message that it’s the inside personality that decides who you are.” Yang explains.

27、Ketchup (番茄酱) is a magical little dressing. It has a sweet and salty bite and makes just about any food more appetizing. 【1】 So how did ketchup become best friends with French fries? Let’s start at the beginning.
【2】In fact, the first ketchup recipe did not include tomatoes! Instead the Chinese made it from salted fish. Doesn’t sound as appetizing as today’s dip, does it?【3】 In the 1900s it started making its way to everyone s dinner tables and refrigerators when the Heinz family bottled and sold it. Ketchup underwent another makeover in the 1970s with the rise of high-fructose corn syrup (高果糖玉米糖浆).
America’s favorite way to eat vegetables originated not in France as the name suggests, but in Belgium. When French fries made their way onto the scene in Europe in the early 1800s, ketchup, as we now know it, had not been invented yet. Americans accepted the side dish in the 1930s and enjoyed them fried in beef fat. 【4】 There are reports of early adopters dipping their fries in ketchup from as early as the late 1800s, but the trend didn’t take off in America until the 1940s. 29、 Owen Williams and his wife befriended their eighty-year-old neighbor, Ken Watson, when they moved into their home in Wales three years ago. When their daughter, Cadi, was born a year later, Watson became a grandfather figure, taking the time to drop off Christmas presents for the child. Watson died in October.
On Monday, Watson’s daughter stopped by the Williams home with a large bag containing 14 wrapped Christmas presents her father had bought and wrapped for Cadi.
Williams posted notes about what happened on Twitter to spread some Christmas spirit. He wrote that he wasn’t sure whether he should give his daughter all the presents now, or hold onto them and give her one a year. Twitter responded in a big way, with many saying the story brought them to tears. So many people weighed in about the gifts, in fact, that Williams made a Twitter poll. So far, more than 55,000 people have voted on how he should distribute the gifts.
Williams, who is a social-media consultant, said the majority of people are voting for giving Cadi one present a year. He said he has no idea what is in the packages, but he’s leaning toward listening to the will of the voters.“I think we’re going to turn it into a Christmas story for our daughter,” he said. “We’ll do one a year for the next 14 years. It feels like the right thing to do now. If she opens a box of Lego when she’s 16 then so be it.”
He said he was struck by how many people have responded by saying their neighbors are virtual strangers to them.“The thing that stands out to me is how few people know their neighbors,” Williams said. “People are saying, ‘That’s so lovely. I don’t even know my neighbors.’ … This Christmas, take your neighbors a bottle of wine or a small gift, a token. Just say, ‘Hi.’ You can open a new world like we did.”
