二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、While established by Woodrow Wilson as a holiday in the United States in 1911, the practice of recognizing mothers on a specific day or time of year has spread to more than 40 countries. Here's a look at the various traditions.

    France

Mother's Day in France only started in the 1950s. After World War I, it was celebrated on the last Sunday in May, unless it conflicted with the Pentecost(五旬节). If it did, mothers were celebrated on the first Sunday of June. Regardless of the day, a traditional gif is a flower-shaped cake.

    Japan

Following WWI, Mother's Day in Japan gained some popularity, and it is now celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Gifts include red or pink conations(康乃馨) as they symbolize sweetness and purity. Children will often draw pictures of their mothers and present them to mom in addition to preparing dishes that their mothers have taught them.

    Sweden

Celebrated on the last Sunday in May, the day isn't all that different from the U. S. version. There's breakfast in bed and homemade cards and the like. One difference is that the Swedish Red Cross collects money by selling red plastic flowers. The money from the flowers goes to mothers and children in need.

    Thailand

While all mothers are recognized during Mother's Day in Thailand, the holiday is largely centered on Sirikit, the queen mother of Thailand. Mother's Day is celebrated on her birthday, August 12, and public places and households are decorated with lights and pictures of Sirikit. Flowers like jasmine are popular gifts.

    A.Buy pictures.

    D.Present cards.

【2】Which country has a fixed date for Mother's Day?

    A.France.

    B.Japan.

    C.Thailand.

【3】What's the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.To tell us how different countries celebrate Mother's Day.

B.To protect traditions of Mother's Day in different places.

C.To introduce the origin and development of Mother's Day.

D.To call on us to show respect for our mother on Mother's Day.

  • 27、As students are discussing their favorite colleges, there’s one characteristic they can’t control: their race.

That’s one reason voters, courts and politicians in six states have outlawed racial preferences in college admissions, while other colleges, fearful of lawsuits, play down their affirmative-action efforts these days. But make no mistake: race still matters. How much depends on the school and the state.

In Texas, public universities have managed to reduce the effect of racial-preference bans by automatically admitting the top 10% of the graduating class of every high school, including those schools where most students are minorities. But Rice University in Houston, private and highly selective, has had to reinvent its admissions strategies to maintain the school’s minority enrollment. Each February, 80 to 90 black, Hispanic (西班牙裔的) and Native American kids visit Rice on an expenses-paid trip. Rice urges headmasters from high schools with large minority populations to recommend qualified students. And in the fall, Rice sends two recruiters (招生人员) on the road to find minority applicants; each recruiter visits about 80 mainly black or Hispanic high schools. Two weeks ago, Rice recruiter Tamara Siler dropped in on Westlake High in Atlanta, where 99% of the 1,296 students are black. Siler went hearing literature and advice, and though only two kids showed up, she said, “I’m pleased I got two.”

Rice has also turned to some almost comical end-runs around the spirit of the law. The university used to award a yearly scholarship to a Mexican-American student; now it goes to a student who speaks Spanish really well. Admissions officers no longer know an applicant’s race. But a new essay question asks about each student’s “background” and “cultural traditions.” When Rice officials read applications, they look for “diverse life experiences” and what they awkwardly call “overcome students,” who have triumphed over hardship.

Last spring, admissions readers came across a student whose SAT score was lower than 1,200 and who did not rank in the top 10% of her class. Numerically speaking, she was far behind most accepted applicants. But her essay and recommendations indicated a strong interest in civil rights and personal experience with racial discrimination (歧视). She was admitted. “All the newspapers say affirmative action is done,” says an experienced adviser at a large New York City high school. “But nothing has changed. I have a (minority) kid at Yale with an SAT score in the high 900s.”

【1】What does the word “outlaw” (in Para. 1) most probably mean?

    A.support

    B.consider

    C.ban

    D.hate

【2】What can we infer from the passage about affirmative action?

A.It guarantees students of different races to be admitted equally.

B.It discriminates against minority students in college admissions.

C.It gives preference to minority students in college admissions.

D.It is popular with American colleges but not with the American public.

【3】Why does Rice University send two recruiters to find minority applicants?

A.Rice has a large minority population.

B.Rice wants to maintain its minority enrollment.

C.Minority students do not favor Rice very much.

D.Minority students have better school performance.

【4】Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

    A.Here Comes Equality at Last

    B.Yes, Your Race Still Matters

    C.Well Done, Affirmative Action

D.Minorities Are Still a Minority in Universities

  • 28、Germans have a word wanderlust which translated into English would be ‘the desire to wander'. Nowadays the chance to travel is endless. Thanks to cheap air tickets, travelling abroad is very easy and sometimes it's even cheaper to fly out of the country than to travel within your own. So, yes, travelling is cheap but there have to be other reasons to travel and you've right, there are plenty!

I have always had this feeling of wanderlust. It started from me wanting to explore my local woods at the back of my garden as a young girl and as I have grown, so has my sense of adventure. And I found my local woods being replaced with the Brazil wetland, Pantanal, where I went last summer in search of jaguars, snakes and crocodiles. The thing with travelling is it's always different. Even if you went to the same country, to the same town and stayed in the exact same hotel it would be a completely different experience. The people you meet will be different, and they will tell you their own travelling stories: stories of holiday romance, holiday worries and stories that seem so outrageous that you can hardly believe them until something similar happens to you.

Or maybe the difference is you? Maybe you have changed since last time you were there? And that's the thing with travelling - it changes you. When you travel you are forced to experience a new culture. Whether it's eating guinea pig, or staying with a family where neither of you speak a common language and you have to communicate through hand actions and smiles, the experience gives me itchy feet to do it all again. And although wanderlust is a German word, the English idiom "to have itchy feet" has a similar idea. Someone who has itchy feet needs to leave or travel. This desire to explore is found not only in language but in us.

【1】According to Paragraph 2, what is the most important part of travelling? ______

    A.You can have different experiences.

B.You can hear many travelling stories.

    C.You will experience holiday romance.

D.You are able to take more adventures.

【2】The underlined word "outrageous" in Paragraph 2 probably means ______ .

    A.interesting

    B.surprising

    C.moving

    D.disappointing

【3】What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 refer to? ______

A.Staying with a family without common languages.

B.Communicating through hand actions and smiles.

C.Eating guinea pig with a family.

    D.Experiencing a different culture.

【4】The writer wrote the passage in order to ______ .

    A.give various reasons for travelling

    B.encourage people to travel abroad

    C.explain the German word "wanderlust"

    D.share the writer's travelling experiences

  • 29、Work Smarter Not Harder

In Dan Pink’s Free Agent Nation: The Future of Working for Yourself, he closes the book with a long, excellent list of “Work Smarter Not Harder” type advice for people who want to start working for themselves. 【1】 Below are my favorites.

●Make a “to don’t” list. Prepare a list that contains all the things you shouldn’t waste your time on—useless tasks, unnecessary meetings, worthless phone calls, and so on. 【2】

●Carry a notebook and pen. Thomas Edison did it. Virginia Woolf did it. And so did Charles Darwin. They carried a notebook with them everywhere and wrote down ideas that popped into their heads. 【3】 Trust me: This is a fantastic way to explore ideas and to weave creativity into the fabric of your life.

【4】 Become a learning machine. Ask questions. Take smart people to lunch. Read. Read some more. Listen to audiobooks. Take classes. Added benefit: This makes life more interesting. Yet another benefit: Studies have shown that people who make constant learning part of their lives end up living longer.

●Guard your calendar. Make sure your time is focused on your one or two top priorities(优先解决的事物). Ask yourself: “Is this how I want to be spending my time right now?” Remember: You are your calendar. 【5】

●Respond to calls and e-mails quickly. Even if your response is, “I’ll get back to you,” try to get back to people within 24 hours. They’ll appreciate the politeness.

    A.Learn.

    B.Be quick, but don’t hurry.

C.So treat your calendar with respect.

D.Try to begin your day the same way.

    E.Page through the notebook occasionally.

F.Then place it next to your “to do” list and stick to it.

G.Frankly, the list is so good I think everyone would benefit from it.

  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jack’s world was falling down and breaking into pieces and waking up early and going to work was the last thing he desired to do. On Wednesday he came out of his small discouraging room and walked into the crowded and hot bus, and leaned against a seat, started closing his eyes and dreamed up.

All of a sudden, his dream was stopped by the hissing of the bus door. It was his stop and in a rush, he hurried out of the bus. He started coughing since exhaust hit him and he thought to himself not the finest start of the day... oh well, as usual.

Jack still had time, since his working day would only start in half an hour, so to gather his thoughts and to put himself in another annoying work day. Despite what it may seem his life was not that bad. He was a normal guy with some hobbies and friends, a good job, and a bright future. Yet incidentally this August was tough on him and it threw him off track.

While walking he met a couple. He could hear them talking in a foreign language and concluded that the language was Russian. He thought that they are probably tourists and are going to simply pass by, yet to his surprise in a broken English the woman asked him.

“Excuse me! Please, could you help?”

“Yes, sure, what can I do for you?”

“We tourist and we lost. Red Tree hotel. Where is it? You know?”

Although knowing where exactly the hotel was and although he wasn’t in a hurry, because of being so involved in his own hardships and his bad mood he mechanically (机械地) lied saying “I have no idea. I’m sorry... I’m in a hurry.” and moved off. He walked about 100 feet and a wave of shame and guilt covered him. Then he imagined how horrifying and difficult it could be staying in a huge city as New York without being able to properly communicate.
