26、 The English are well-known for using the word “sorry”, but we don’t just use the word for apologies.
Sometimes the word “sorry” is just used for normal apologies. It can range from everything from “Sorry I drank the last of the milk” to “Sorry that I just ran over your foot with my car.”
It might seem strange, but the word “sorry” is often used as a kind of greeting. It is used to get someone’s attention. Maybe it is a waiter in a restaurant from whom you wish to order or a stranger on the street who you want to get past.
If an English person wants something, they will often point to the item in question and simply say, “Sorry.” The word acts as an unsaid request since it would simply be too rude to actually ask for the item. An example of this is when asking for the last cookie on a plate. “Sorry” is used as a way of forcing the other people into a corner where it would be impolite for them to say no.
If an English person doesn’t hear clearly what you said they will often loudly say the word “sorry”. This means that they want you to repeat yourself but louder.
The English are not always as polite as they would have you think. Not all our apologies are honest. If we want to say something rude to you we will often start a sentence with “I’m sorry but...” What then follows will be some negative (负面的) comments. The use of the word “sorry” in this case is as protection. It means you are not allowed to get angry because we already apologized and we’re only being honest.
The English are not great with emotions (情感). When hearing someone’s sad story about how their cat died, they lost all their money or they got sick, an English person will often reply with “I’m sorry.”
Thank you for your time. If I’ve missed any kind of English uses of the word “sorry”, please add them in the comments below.

27、Jordan Mitter has been spending weekends teaching seniors in New York how to use technology for years, but he never expected he would be streaming(直播) a class about smartphones and computers on smartphones and computers.
The Manhattan resident has patiently taught texting, emailing and video chatting to dozens of seniors for years, beginning when his grandparents first got smartphones. Teaching them how to use apps and send messages inspired the tech-savvy(懂科技知识的) teen to offer his services to more older people. At age of 12, he created a formal course and started hosting free, hour-long sessions for seniors every Sunday. Immediately, he was flooded with interested participants. His course, spread out over 10 weeks, was an instant success.
But when the coronavirus hit New York City, Jordan had to end his classes. He wasn’t sure if he could move the lessons on line— it was much easier to help students understand their devices in person—but he knew the importance of keeping older folks connected online. Most of the attendees were retired or lived alone and needed to find ways to connect with family members remotely. “It gives them somewhere to be and something to do,” he said.
So he spent a week ensuring each student could use Zoom, an online video chat platform. For most of the seniors, that meant calling them individually with step-to-step instructions. Since then, online classes have been going smoothly.
His project, Mittler Senior Technology, has taught Jordan the value of making inter-generational relationships. He frequently invites his teenage friends to participate in his classes, hoping more young people will take time to help older relatives or neighbors.
“Any kid in our generation can show their grandparents how to send an email,”he said. “It’s very important to spend as much time with them as you can.”For family members trying to help older relatives surf the Internet, Jordan has some advice. He suggests starting with basic applications, like email or texting. From there, it’s easier to learn how to navigate more complex apps and websites. “Patience is really key,”he said.

28、Paris is the city of dreams, the city of love. If you are thinking of heading to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is in order. But my experience was a romantic one.
I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the official processes I was required to complete — forms to be filled in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless. Perhaps it was due to my well organizational habit, but somehow this endless list of todo’s was completed in little more than a week.
Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations and assignments first, rather than last. This method proved to be very helpful.
Once I had finished class for the week, I had an ever-increasing list of museums to visit, neighborhoods to explore, and cafes to sit in and parks to run around. Read as many books about Paris as you can. Talk to as many locals and other foreigners living there as you can. But the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot. I discovered some of my favorite places in Paris by wandering. The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that I experienced in Paris as an exchange student.
After spending five months wandering through the charming neighborhoods, I fell in love with the atmosphere that came out from every open door, and with every spoken word. There is something comforting about walking to the market each Sunday to be faced with the beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. There is warmth in saying bonjour to the passers-by.
On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, “Bonjour Monsieur,” as I passed the little store down the street. I guess no matter how hard I tried I was always going to be an outsider, a tourist. The best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. Everyone’s experience of Paris is different. I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.

29、France is fighting food waste with firm determination. A new law has been passed in the country that will ban grocery stores from throwing away unsold food. If it’s still safe to eat, the food must be donated to charity; if not, it goes to farmers for use as animal feed.
Supermarkets will no longer be allowed to destroy unsold food by intention in order to prevent people from eating it. There are many people who forage for food in dumpsters behind stores, wanting to take advantage of the perfectly safe food that gets thrown away on a daily basis. Food waste is a global problem. It is reported that the average French person throws out 20 to 30 kilograms of food a year — 7 kg of which is still in its wrapping.
Not everyone is happy about the new legislation.
A group of food foragers stated their concerns in an open letter: “Food waste is a deep problem.” They are worried that it creates the illusion of doing one’s part — a “false and dangerous idea of a magic solution” — while failing to address the deeper reasons for such waste.
“The fight against food waste is everyone’s business, but we can’t win it unless we completely change the structures within our food system that are responsible for this waste.”
The supermarkets aren’t pleased because their food waste represents only 5 to 10 percent of the 7.1 million tons of food wasted annually in France. By contrast, restaurants waste 15 percent and consumers 67 percent. “The law is wrong in both target and intent,” argues Jacques Creyssel, head of the distribution organization for big supermarkets. “Big stores are already the major food donors.”
Despite the naysayers, France’s new law is a move in the right direction. Wasting food absolutely needs to become a socially abhorrent thing to do. If legislation is what’s needed to get people thinking about conservation, then it’s not a bad thing.
【1】What should we do about unsafe food that is unsold in grocery stores?
A.Sell it at a discount.
B.Donate it to charity.
C.Use it as animal feed.
D.Destroy it on purpose.

A.They are greatly concerned about the law.
B.They have addressed the main cause of such waste.
C.They want to change the structures of our food system.
D.They think fighting against food waste is their business.
【3】How much food is wasted by restaurants every year in France?
A.About 1 million tons.
B.About 4 million tons.
C.About 5 million tons.
D.About 7.1 million tons.
【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards the law on forbidding food waste?
A.Critical.
