Cultual Breaks by Brian Aldiss Reviewed by Paul Kincaid Brian Aldiss is an amazing and frustrating writer. When he is on song, his style is forceful, disturbing and delectable. But he is a restless writer. He came into his own in the enthusiastic and experimental atmosphere of the New Wave, and he has been driven to try the new and the different ever since. That he is still experimenting now, 50years after his first appearance, is a measure of a man who has never been prepared to settle back on his laurels.
The Secrets of Jin-Shei by Alma Alexander Reviewed by Donna McMahon With so many fantasy novels using European-derived settings and mythology, ancient China makes a refreshing change. The landscape is tempting and yet familiar enough to feel very real, and the author uses magic sparingly, in ways appropriate to her society. This and the complex detail put into the backdrop makes the novel feel very much like historical fiction.

27、I am writing to tell you about your article Smartphones Make Life Easier in last Sunday’s newspaper. You did an excellent job explaining the good points of smartphones, but you didn’t talk about their bad points at all. So, I hope you’ll let me give your readers some advice on smartphone etiquette (礼仪).
The first point I’d like to address is loudness. When you talk on your smartphone in public, please don’t shout. In fact, the microphones in smartphones are very sensitive (灵敏的). So, you can be heard even if you speak quietly.
Another point is about personal space. I don’t think it is polite to make calls in small spaces full of people. This makes others uncomfortable and forces them to listen to your personal business. What’s worse, it stops many face-to-face conversations from ever beginning.
Lastly, doing two things at the same time is dangerous. For example, making calls while driving is a bad habit. Pay attention to the road! Similarly, when staying with your friends, turn off your smartphone and enjoy their company.
Yours truly,
Amber Jala

28、Everyone would like to be nice to their pets! Here are some tips for you to keep your pets well.
Control the amount of food. Feed them not too little, but not too much, either. You have to tell the difference between the times when they ’re hungry and the times when they’re just trying to get food. Clean their food and drink bowls at least once a day. 【1】 You wouldn’t eat off the same plate for one whole week or drink out of the same glass for a month!
【2】Pets want as much of your attention as possible, especially dogs. In general, admit your pets’ existence; even say “Hi, how are you doing?” Clearly they won’t understand what you’re saying, but it shows that you care for them.
Take dogs on walks. Most dogs don’t like to be kept in a house all day long. 【3】 They can also meet other dogs this way. Dogs like the company of other dogs.
Take them to the vet (兽医) regularly. Your pet may not like it. 【4】 Reward it sometimes and he will be happy with what he gets.
If you had to take your dog to the hospital, he might be afraid of riding in cars. 【5】 Your dog will finally realize that not all car rides end at the hospital.
A.Wait for sharing.
B.It’s the same with us.
C.Pay much attention to your pets.
D.Make sure it has a warm place to live in.
E.They like to get out and enjoy the fresh air.
F.In that case, take very short car rides that lead somewhere full of fun.
G.However, it’s better to do it often now than to find out later that your pet has a disease.
29、 “It’s a big hammer to crack a nut.” This is how one angry parent described the recent crackdown (严厉的打击) by London police on parents who drop their kids off at school by car. Yes, you read that correctly—the very mode of transportation that many American schools insist is the only safe way to deliver kids to school is now considered illegal in the UK.
The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids within a particular zone of east London comes from city councillors’ (议员) long-term efforts to make the area safer and less crowded. They say they’ve been trying for years “to encourage reasonable parking”, but in vain. Neighborhood residents complain frequently about their driveways being blocked by illegally parked cars for 15 minutes or more, often while they’re trying to get to work, and the streets are long overcrowded.
Now the rules have changed. Some parents are angry. Angie is a mother who made the “big hammer” comment and says the crackdown is “way over the top.” The nearest drop-off point for her six- year-old is now a five-minute walk from the school. Others are happy with the decision, severe though it may seem. Councillor Jason Frost said :
“Traffic has significantly reduced, and more children are now walking to school, which is a great outcome. I would rather have complaints that we are slightly inconveniencing parents than hear that a child had been seriously injured because nothing was done.”
I witness daily the chaos created by these in-town drivers, when I walk my own kids to school. There’s a parking lot crowded with vehicles and a slow-moving train of cars moving in circles, many filling the air with harmful smoke. Meanwhile, the conversations around overweight children and the importance of daily physical activities continue to stand out in schools.
【1】Why is Angie Baillieul opposed to the new rule?
A.She is often fined by London police.
B.She will lose her job as a school driver.
C.She has adapted to the American practice.
D.She thinks it adds inconvenience to her kid.
【2】What concerned Jason Frost most?
A.People’s complaints.
B.Students’ health.
C.Students’ safety.
D.Parents’ inconvenience.
【3】What can be seen after the crackdown is carried out?
A.Less daily chaos.
B.Favor from all people.
C.More over-weight children.
D.Complaints from neighbors.
【4】What is author’s attitude toward the crackdown?
A.Favorable. B.Uncaring.
C.Doubtful. D.Opposed.

If you can’t seem to catch enough Z’s during the week, you’re not alone. But bad things happen to your body when you’re sleep-deprived, not least of which is weight gain. Well, here’s some good news: Sleeping in on the weekend to make up for sleep lost during the week is 【1】 with lower body mass index (BMI), according to a study published in the Oxford University Press journal Sleep.
The researchers, a collaboration of scientists based in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Republic of Korean, sought to determine if what they refer to as “catch-up sleep”【2】 body mass index (BMI) in the general population. To do so, they conducted face-to-face interviews of a random sampling of 2,156 adults, comparing their sleep habits with their BMI scores. The 932 participants who slept in – “catch-up sleepers” (people who sleep longer on the weekend than on weekdays by approximately two hours) had a(n)【3】lower BMI than the other subjects. What’s more, every additional hour of catch-up sleep was linked with a decrease in BMI.
As to why sleeping in on weekends can lead to weight loss, one of the study co-authors, Robert Thomas, MD, MMSc, of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston,【4】 Reader’s Digest of the “substantial(大量的) experimental and epidemiological(流行病学的) data that short sleep contributes to weight gain.” He notes, “our best 【5】as researchers are that there are balances to be kept, and the body can adjust and 【6】 within reason. Catch-up sleep allows the basic balance to be maintained.”
Although the study showed significant differences in BMI with the 【7】of two or more hours of catch-up sleep, Dr. Thomas points out that there are “substantial individual differences,” such that the benefit we get from those extra hours will vary 【8】 on how much sleep each of us generally needs. “To determine your optional sleep, you can track the time spent sleeping on nights when there is no need to wake up to an alarm,” suggests Liza Baker, a health coach at Simply Health Coaching. That tells you about how many hours of sleep your body likes to get, since it 【9】greatly across the population, from just 4 to 5 hours to 9 to 10 hours.
So can you actually lost weight by sleeping in on the weekend? Only if you’re paying off a sleep 【10】from the week, according to the result of this study. It helps if you’re also eating less, Dr. Thomas adds.
32、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.
When Is the Mona Lisa Not the Mona Lisa?
How many Mona Lisa paintings do you think there are in the world today? Just the one? I don't think so. The truth is that there are probably many, many Mona Lisa's hanging on walls or in studios. Of course only one was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci but the art of copying is very common in the art world.
In fact it is true to say that artists have been copying from other artists for hundreds if not thousands of years. Traditionally, it was normal for artists to copy other artists' paintings. This was a way of making sure historical, religious and artistic traditions were available for future generations. It was considered normal for an artist in training to practise by copying the work of other great artists.
Historically, the purpose of art was for historical or religious reference. Most of the time no one cared who painted the paintings. This is why we find it difficult to identify the artists behind some of the greatest older paintings. Paintings were usually commissioned by the church or state, not b/ individuals so the name of the artist was really unimportant.
However, from around the 16th century the church and state became poorer and money found its way into the hands of rich individuals. These individuals, as a means of showing their place in society or a knowledge of art, drastically increased the demand for art. Suddenly more and more artists were needed and people competed to buy the paintings of certain individual artists. These created people whose job it was to buy and sell paintings. It also created galleries and auction houses. Suddenly art was a business and at its centre was money.
