二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、My dad is the kind of parent that expects my best. He would never be angry if I failed at something as long as I tried. He never changes his mind after he makes it, which sometimes makes him seem too stubborn. My dad's strictness comes from the way he was raised. He grew up working long hours on his family farm. His dad was bad-tempered, and he would get angry enough to throw wooden boards at my dad when he did something wrong. In high school, my dad woke up at four in the morning to get his chores (家务) done and walk to school so that he would make it to basketball practice by five.

Through all of the duties my dad had at home, he played three sports and went to school on top of it. School would have been easy , but my dad had dyslexia(读写困难) which made it nearly impossible for him to read. Since dyslexia wasn't recognized back then, every teacher my dad had passed along thinking that he was just unable to learn. My dad struggled in school until one teacher took the time to sit down and teach him how to read and write.

The best part about my dad is his attitude toward daily life. Even though he likes things once right, he also knows how go to with the flow and have a good time. My dad doesn't worry about things he can't control. When he comes home from a terrible day at work, he always puts on a smile on his face because he knows family is a lot more important than any other thing.

I know that I get my best qualities from my parents and the way they raised me. My dad has shown me that with discipline and hard work I can achieve anything, and have fun while doing it.

Since Art History class in college, I had always admired his works and I was lucky to see a large exhibition of his works when I was in my early 30s. It was at this event that I bought a print of his painting. “Snap the Whip.” I had it framed and until I retired from teaching it always hung in my classroom

I thought it truly captured(捕捉) the freedom and fun of childhood. In the painting, a group of young boys are playing a game arm in arm on grass ground in front of a farm house. They are jumping and laughing wildly with great joy. One of the boys is falling down to the ground. They are not even wearing shoes!

During my last year of teaching, there was a young woman in her first year of teaching right next door to me and we got to be good friends. She had been an art student before taking up education. Her eyes were drawn immediately to this print when she entered my room. So on my last day of teaching, after the students had left, I took the painting off the wall and walked next door and gave it to her.

She was really surprised, but very pleased to have it. I was pleased that she liked it and all the students she would have would treasure(珍爱) it as much as I had. We found the perfect place for it on one of her walls and hung it together. Thank you for bring back this wonderful memory for me.

  • 28、Reading makes you a smarter, better leader. But if you’ve been following the latest science, you’ll also know that studies have shown regularly picking up a book might increase your empathy (共鸣) and protect you from feeling lonely, hopeless or suffering from dementia ( ) in later life. But obviously, that’s not the end of the list. New research has discovered yet another benefit of being a reader who focuses one’s mind on reading.

After following those surveyed based on more than 3,500 adults over age 50 for 12 years, the team from Yale University behind the research found that those who read books for 3.5 hours a week were 23 percent less likely to die. Reading for less than 3.5 hours a week lowered participants’ (参加者) risk of death by 17 percent. Put another way, picking up an interesting book could earn you about an extra two years.

It’s worth noticing that the researchers were looking exactly at time spent in reading books, rather than newspapers, magazines, or online media, and that this difference is important for the observed advantages of reading. “We found that reading books provided a greater advantage than reading newspapers or magazines,” said Avni Bavishi of the Yale School of Public Health. “This effect is likely because books attract the readers’ mind more — providing more cognitive (认知的) advantages, and therefore increasing the lifespan (寿命). In short, deep slow reading rather than reading quickly and carelessly is best.”

So how long should you be reading for, and what sort of titles should you pick up? While more reading seems to be better, the researchers suggest that anything more than

30 minutes a day will be likely to do good to you. As for what exactly to read, the researchers can’t yet offer much advice beyond making time for actual books, though they pointed out this was a promising way to future research.

1What’s the purpose of the author’s writing the first paragraph?

    A. To tell the importance of modern science.

    B. To explain the reasons for forming good habits.

    C. To show the benefits of reading.

    D. To list some painful sufferings.

2What is the finding of the research of Yale University?

    A. Reading can build one’s confidence.

    B. Reading might make one feel safe.

    C. Reading should be done regularly.

    D. Reading could help one live longer.

3Why is it better to read books instead of newspapers or magazines?

    A. It improves the readers’ abilities to know about things.

    B. It helps the readers to get more interested in the stories.

    C. It makes the readers think of their own past experiences.

    D. It offers the readers different practical skills of reading.

4What will the future research focus on?

    A. Reading methods.   B. Reading materials.

    C. Reading abilities.   D. Reading purposes.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、根据下面短文内容,在短文的空格处填上一个恰当的词,使短文完整、通顺。

Coffee bars, live music, cinemas and shopping malls—Chinese cities offer everything that a young person might want. But there are many young people who hardly have time to enjoy these things. That’s because they follow what is called the “996” work schedule (时间表) 1 at 9 am and finishing at 9 pm, six days a week.

The “996” work schedule has recently become a hot topic of discussion online after a computer programmer set up a website called “996.ICU”. According to the website, working a “996” schedule 2 enough rest is unhealthy and could cause people to end up in an intensive care unit (ICU,重症监护病房). This work schedule is now widely used at Chinese tech companies like Baidu, Alibaba and Huawei, New York Times reported. It causes many tech industry workers to complain. One worker from Baidu company said, “I know I am not the 3 worker who works overtime I have worked ‘996’ for nine months and I haven’t received any overtime pay. It’s unfair though quite common.” Another worker named Zhang told Quartz, “I can’t sleep well and become ill because of the great pressure. I feel really tired, so I am considering giving up this job and looking for 4.”

However, the bosses of some tech companies have supported “996”. Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, said it’s “a huge treasure” for young workers to work “996”. “If you don’t put more time and energy than others, how will you achieve the success you want? If you don’t work ‘996’ when you’re young, 5 will you?” he said.

Many have questioned Ma’s words. In a passage in People’s Daily, one writer said “Working ‘996’ is just working overtime. However, working overtime does not 6 working hard. Working hard requires efforts and working wisely and effectively.”

A lawyer called Cui Zhendong told China Daily that it is against the 7 to use a compulsory (强制的) “996” work schedule. China’s Labor Law clearly announces that workers should work no more than eight hours a day 8 more than forty-four hours a week.
