26、From soldier to wildlife photographer, the 67-year-old Shandong Province native, Ge Yuxiu, has lived in Qinghai Province for 51 years. For almost half that time, he has been on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where he has devoted his life to photographing and protecting wild animals.
Ge’s love for photography grew after his photo of soldiers reading news written on a blackboard was published in Qinghai Daily in 1979. He probably would never have turned to photographing wild animals without a visit to Bird Island in Qinghai Lake in 1995. “I became addicted to the bird kingdom,” Ge said, adding that he has so far visited the island more than 200 times to take photos.
In late 1997, Ge was on his way to the island to take photos of swans when he saw seven yellowish-brown animals running across the grass-lands, in a line. On hearing one of his companions shouting “Przewalski’s gazelle”, he took out his camera and took photos of them. He was later told by wildlife reservation experts that he had shot the world ‘s first image of Przewalski’s gazelle (普氏原羚), a relatively small, slender antelope unique to China.
“I was so excited to hear that,” he said. His excitement, however, soon gave way to anxiety after he learned about the animal’s endangered situation. Only found around Qinghai Lake, there were just 300 of them surviving in the wild at the time. The incident became a turning point in Ge ‘s photography career, as he decided to devote his efforts to saving the gazelle and other endangered animals.
From then on, he often spent time in the wild observing the gazelle and regularly visited wildlife reservation experts in Qinghai and places much farther away. Through his photos, Ge publicly called on the government, research institutions and the public to protect Przewalski’s gazelle. His continued efforts led to at least eight of his proposals reaching Qinghai provincial authorities, and a reserve and a separate station especially for the reservation of the antelope were established in December 2007 and September 2009.
Thanks to joint efforts, the population of Przewalski’s gazelle has now increased to about 2,700.

28、 A survey said the average Asian dad spent one minute a day with his children. I was shocked. I mean, a whole minute? Every day? Get real. Once a week maybe. The fact is, many Asian males are terrible at kid-related things. In fact, I am one of them.
Child-rearing (养育) doesn’t come naturally to guys. My mother knew the names of our teachers, best friends and crushes. My dad was only vaguely aware there were short people sharing the apartment. My mother bought healthy fresh food at the market every day. My dad would only go shopping when there was nothing in the fridge except a jar of butter. Then he’d buy beer. My mother always knew the right questions to ask our teachers. My dad would ask my English teacher if she could get us a discount on school fees. My mother served kid food to kids. My dad added chili sauce to everything, including our baby food.
The truth is, mothers have superpowers. My son fell off a wall once and hurt himself all over. I demanded someone bring me a computer so I could google what to do. My wife ignored me and did some sort of chanting (咏诵) phrase such as“Mummy kiss it better,” and cured 17 separate injuries in less than 15 seconds.
Yes, mothers are incredible people, but they are not always correct. Yet honesty forces me to record the fact that mothers only know best 99.99 percent of the time. Here are some famous slip-ups.
The mother of Bill Gates:“If you’re going to drop out of college and hang out with your stupid friends, don’t come running to me when you find yourself penniless.”The mother of Albert Einstein:“When you grow up, you’ll find that sitting around thinking about the nature of time and space won’t pay the grocery bills.” The mother of George W. Bush: “You’ll never be like your dad, who became President of the United States and started his own war.”

29、Eat less and exercise more-it has long been a magic word for reducing extra weight. But now it seems that all the hard work may have been useless.
Scientists say there are other reasons why people just keep getting bigger. They say that sleeping habits, central heating, medicines and even some pollutants can play a role in weight gain.
Traditionally, people have focused on diet and exercise to solve the problem. However, the scientists from top US and Canadian universities say that other things must be considered.
Less sleep could be partly the reason. In recent years, the average night's sleep has dropped from nine hours to just seven. Sleep shortage changes levels of the hormones that control food intake and body fat and increases hunger and appetite.
If it is too hot or too cold, we burn calories to cool down or heat up. But if the temperature is just right, the calories may be turned into body fat instead.
Those who take medicine to control their blood pressure can often put on weight. Similarly, studies have shown that going on taking the pill can add to a woman's weight.
The nature of a mother may also be the reason with our body shape partly inherited. The overweight are also more likely to look for partners of a similar size. And their children are more likely to be overweight.
The use of pollutants is on the rise, say the researchers. Some man-made chemicals and plastics can lead to weight gain.
Your mother's age and your weight at birth are also important, with older women more likely to have overweight children and underweight babies having a bigger chance of being overweight in later life.
We tend to put on weight as we get older. Giving up smoking can also help pile on the pounds. The scientists from Yale, Cornell and Johns Hopkins University said there was some evidence supporting poor diet and lack of exercise as the main causes of gaining weight.

【3】What's the main idea of the passage?
