27、Many Western people are not used to sitting on the floor any more. In Japan, however, sitting upright on the floor is common in different situations. For example, meals are traditionally had when people sit on the tatami (榻榻米) floor around a low table. Also during the tea ceremony and other traditional events, one sits on the floor.
The formal way of sitting for both men and women is kneeling upright. People who are not used to sitting in this style may feel uncomfortable after a few minutes, and their legs may go numb. However, foreigners are not usually expected to be able to sit in this style for a long time, and an increasing number of Japanese people themselves aren’t able to do so, owing to a more westernized lifestyle.
In other situations, men usually sit cross-legged, while women sit on their knees laying both legs to one side. The former sitting style is considered wholly male, while the latter is considered completely female.
The most important guest sits on the honored seat which is set farthest from the entrance. If there is a tokonoma (壁龛) in the room, the guest should be seated in front of it. 29、After a long day at work, Yuan Hui, a volunteer teacher in a village in Enshi, Hubei province, decided to stay back in the office until late. This is the 10th year of his volunteer teaching career in the Countryside.
Located deep in the mountains, the village was struck by poverty. Despite all challenges, Yuan believes that it was a precious experience growing up among his students. “I did not come here on a whim. I love teaching from the bottom of my heart,” says Yuan, who teaches a variety of courses, including history, geography and music, in different primary and middle schools in Enshi.
“Since I was a high school student, I’ve dreamed of being a volunteer teacher. Different from the traditional teaching style, I feel there is another way, and I hope to have the opportunity to put my ideas into practice,” he says, adding that his teaching may have a greater impact on students living in mountain villages with limited education resources. “Spreading joy and knowledge among others makes me feel satisfied. Living in the woods, I seemed to have reached a deep understanding with nature, and discovered the essence of life,” he says.
When Yuan first started teaching, he visited every student’s family on the weekends. “Most of them were left-behind children, and some were from single-parent families,” says Yuan. He decided to help the children with their studies by developing good habits. “In such cases, it’s important to help them build up their confidence,” says Yuan. To achieve that goal, Yuan designed a lot of activity-based courses, encouraging children to express themselves more confidently. Yuan’s unique teaching methods became more popular in the county, and other schools invited him to deliver lectures. “I think I’m living a happy life,” he said in one of his lectures.
Over the past years, Yuan has won many national honors. “I think they are a result of my devotion. Only through devotion can one possess inner peace and joy,” he says.

With mathematician Roger Penrose, Hawking used Einstein’s theory of relativity(相对论)to 【4】 the origins of time and space to singularity(奇点),a single point of zero size and infinite density(无限大的密度)where all the laws of physics would have broken down. Their work gave mathematical expression to the Big Bang theory(创世大爆炸理论). Hawking was the first to try to 【5】 relativity with quantum mechanics(量子力学). In 1974, he put forward that black holes leaked radiation, now known as“Hawking radiation,”and would eventually disappear with a tremendous explosion. The proposal 【6】 to one of the most passionate debates in modern cosmology—before Hawking, it was widely accepted that black holes were completely black and would 【7】 forever.
In 1982, Hawking was among the first to show how tiny changes in the distribution(分布)of matter might give rise to the 【8】 of galaxies(银河系)in the universe and lay the seeds of stars, planets and life as we know it.
