二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Folklore is the branch of the study of man which deals with local customs, tales and traditions. Everybody is a storehouse of folklore, though not everybody realizes it. Often, indeed, those who have never heard the word folklore have the greatest store of it, for the people with least book education commonly cherish most firmly old ideas and superstitions which have been passed on by word of mouth for generations. Everyone has heard stories of ghosts, witches, fairies, and giants. We all know some proverbs and have come across such ideas as, for example, that it is lucky to see black cat and unlucky to see a single magpie. We keep certain seasons of the year as festivals, suchn as Christmas, and we are familiar with the special customs connected with weddings and funerals. All such things are of interest to those who study folklore.

People who study folklore won’t criticize the old beliefs and practices they come across as silly, childish, or old-fashioned. Instead, they will try to collect accurate records of them and then see how these are connected with other ideas and customs of other places or times. By comparing with what is known of olden times or the folklore of other countries, they try to discover how certain beliefs and practices came into being, and what purpose they serve now or used to serve in the past.

Often we find that the beliefs which seem most peculiar and unreasonable, and the customs which appear least practical, are of the greatest interest and importance because they are commonly the oldest. Sometimes they were part of an ancient ritual or served a useful purpose when people’s way of life was different from what it is now. So we not only learn about what people thought and did in the past but are better able to understand present customs. People often keep up customs when they have forgotten the original reason for them, and in the course of time a fresh reason gets attached to the custom. Thus, when some joker ties an old shoe to the back of the taxi taking the bride and bridegroom to the station for their honeymoon, he would say it was “for luck”, but actually a shoe is an old fertility (繁殖力) symbol and has a place in the wedding customs of China and Palestine.

    A.practices and beliefs

    B.customs and traditions

A.collect as many records of old beliefs and practices as possible

C.criticize the old beliefs and superstitions as silly or childish

D.find out the purpose the certain beliefs and practices serve or used to serve

  • 28、Gasoline (汽油) is a fuel made from base oil and other petrol liquids. It is mainly used as an engine fuel in vehicles. Leaded (含铅的) gasoline, one of the greatest pollutants, is no longer made or used now. The last country which sold leaded gasoline, Algeria, has stopped doing so recently, about 41 years after the first country made the decision.

It was in the early days of the automobile’s rise that gasoline producers began to add different chemicals to prevent damage to the inside of their engines. Lead, which could be a great lubricant (润滑剂) for the engine, quickly began to represent the excellent choice, which during the next 80 years was shot out through the pipes of cars around the world.

U.S. researchers had already been certain of lead’s harmful effects by the time the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created in 1970. Japan needed seven years following those first reports to ban(禁止) leaded gasoline, with Austria, Canada, Slovakia, Denmark, and Sweden following shortly after. The U.S. and the UK finally stopped leaded gasoline in the late 1990s, after which most countries followed.

“The removal of lead from gasoline is one of the greatest environmental achievements of all time,” said Carol Browner, administrator of the EPA during the year 1996. “With thousands of tons of lead disappearing from the air, blood lead levels in our children are reduced by 70 percent. This means that millions of children will be rid of the painful consequences of lead poisoning, such as nerve damage, anemia (贫血), or mental retardation (迟钝),” she added.

Indeed, the global ban was projected to prevent 1.2 million premature deaths worldwide, and save a total of $2.4 trillion in medical costs for treating lead poisoning, which could do much damage to every major system in the human body.

A detailed summary of the story about leaded gasoline, published by National Geographic, says it took 10 years after the turn of the millennium to persuade 107 countries to ban it, but 16 more years to persuade the holdouts. By 2016, only the war-torn nations of Iraq and Yemen, and the last major exporter, Algeria, were left.

“The successful enforcement (实施) of the ban on leaded gasoline is a huge milestone for global health and our environment,” said Inger Andersen, executive director of the UN Environment Programme.

【1】Why was lead mixed in gasoline?

A.To decrease the harm of gas pollutants.

B.To make the service life of engines longer.

C.To improve the efficiency of using gasoline.

D.To show its advantage over other petrol liquids.

【2】Which of the following countries was a leader in saying no to leaded gasoline?

    A.Algeria.

    B.Canada.

    C.Japan.

    D.Denmark.

【3】Why does the author mention Carol Browner’s words in Paragraph 4?

A.To list the consequences of lead poisoning.

B.To show the importance of banning leaded gasoline.

C.To explain the difficulty in carrying out the global ban.

D.To raise people’s awareness of environmental protection.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

    A.The World Welcomes Cleaner Energy

B.Algeria Is Influenced by Leaded Gasoline

C.Now the Whole World Says “No” to Leaded Gasoline

D.The Removal of Leaded Gasoline Promises Good Health

  • 29、There are glistening and groaning icebergs, playful Adélie, emperor penguins, sunbathing Weddell seals, and spouting sperm whales(抹香鲸)in Antarctica which is the coldest, windiest, driest continent on earth and for many travelers, the final frontier. Today more opportunities than ever are open for tourists to check Antarctica off their bucket lists. But to do that, you have to have the right equipment.

Most journeys to Antarctica are on scientific research ships that also transport tourists. Unlike a traditional cruise(航行), however, you won’t need fancy formal wear for the dining room. Dress on board is casual and above all else, keep safety in mind. Ships typically ban any footwear that’s open-toed or high-heeled, but your tuxedo T-shirt will be just fine for a penguin theme night. The most surprising thing you probably won’t need to pack for Antarctica is a coat. Most cruise operators provide one as part of your package, both for the branding opportunity and for safety reasons. It’s easier to find boatloads of guests on shore journeys when everyone is dressed alike.

Before you step foot on the southernmost continent, you’ll have to brave the Drake Passage. Those who make the crossing frequently will tell you that it’s referred to as the “Drake Shake” or the “Drake Lake“, depending on the swell of the sea. If it’s the former, you’ll want to be prepared with seasickness medicine.

As you approach your first landing, the ship’s crew will check your outdoor wear and camera equipment like tripods for any tiny stowaways. Everything will be examined, vacuumed(抽真空), and brushed to remove foreign particle like dirt and seeds in order to protect Antarctica’s environment.

A waterproof backpack is useful for keeping your camera equipment dry, and your phone secure and handy for quick photos. The extreme cold will drain the batteries in your electronic devices faster than usual, so bring extras and keep them in an inner coat pocket to benefit from your body heat until you need them.

Double-check your luggage and keep the above in mind before you depart.

【1】Which of the following meets the dressing requirement for passengers heading for Antarctica?

    A.Wearing flat-heeled and closed-toed shoes.

    B.Carrying warm coats for replacement.

C.Wearing a formal suit for dinner.

    D.Preparing coats in bright colors.

【2】What can be implied about the Drake Passage?

A.It’s the most difficult passage worldwide.

B.It’s the most famous tourist spot in Antarctica.

C.Crossing it can bring travelers physical discomfort.

D.Asking others for advice will make it less dangerous.

【3】What should tourists bear in mind before going to Antarctica according to Paragraph 4?

    A.Learning about its environment.

    B.Avoiding bringing dirt from there.

C.Carrying as much photographic equipment as possible.

D.Bringing no foreign seeds with them.

【4】What does the underlined word “drain” in the fifth paragraph mean?

    A.Freeze

    B.Consume.

    C.Activate.

    D.Change.
