  • 26、

    Q

    Dear Matt,

I don’t have anyone to play with at break. My classmates all have their company, and no one is interested in talking to me. I’m shy and very lonely. I find it hard to make friends. what should I do?

    Friendless

    A

    Dear Friendless,

Take the initiative. The things that you want in life won’t always just happen for you. Often, we need to take action to make a positive change in our lives. This also happens to be true for making friends. Fortunately, there is a lot you can do starting today to build friendships with your classmates.

It’s true that it’s easier for some people to make friends than others. Like you, I am also a fairly shy person. Sometimes, it takes effort to go out and meet people. You will have to overcome your shyness by talking to people. It may be frightening and uncomfortable at first, but it’s the only way to develop your confidence and begin to make friends.

Making new friends starts with talking. You will need to get close to others to start a conversation. Do you have any common interests with your classmates? Find them. It could be something as simple as a TV show, music or sports.

Are you involved in any after-school clubs, sports or activities? There are friends out there for all of us, and they will come more naturally. I used to play on a soccer team for many years when I was younger. Working towards a common goal-winning the game in this case—helped the teammates to work together. I made many friends this way.

During the break, maybe you can introduce a new game or activity that others would be interested in. Make sure your body language shows that you are open and willing to talk with others. Don’t be afraid to speak loud before a group of people. Also, don’t be afraid to simply ask if you can join your classmates in whatever game or activity they’re now engaged in.

    You can do it.

    Matt

    1Who is Matt?

    A.A reporter. B.An adviser.

C.A classmate of Friendless’. D.A soccer coach.

2Matt gives the following suggestions to Friendless EXCEPT _______.

A.starting talking to others. B.watching a TV Show.

C.joining in after-school activities. D.introducing what interests others.

3Why does Matt share his experience on a soccer team with Friendless?

A.To invite Friendless to join his team. B.To explain the benefit of playing soccer.

C.To tell that he used to be good at sports. D.To show joining a team helps make friends.

4According to Matt, what can help to show one’s willingness to talk?

A.Using body language. B.Keeping asking questions.

    C.Creating a new game. D.Speaking in a low voice.

5Where is this text taken from?

    A.An Encyclopedia. B.A brochure. C.A newspaper. D.A story-book.

  • 28、Traveling can be a very fun and exciting way to vacation with your family, but it does not always turn out as expected. I have traveled a lot with my family over the years, but some experiences are worth forgetting altogether. I remember a particular traveling experience which sticks out in my mind for the wrong reasons.

My dad and stepmom had decided to drive to California for our family vacation. This was supposed to provide educational value, since we would be able to stop along the way and look at various sites in each state. Everything was going as planned until we decided to take a break and stop at the Grand Canyon(大峡谷). I had always wanted to see this exciting place and had decided to write a report on it for my eight-grade English class. We got out of the car and were walking on one of the paths to get to a cliff(悬崖) so we could take a family photo when I slipped(滑倒) and fell down. I fell on a piece of rock, and felt great pain run up my leg at once. My dad took me to the nearest hospital and, after an eight-hour wait in the emergency room(急诊室), found out that I broke two bones in my foot.

Needless to say, our vacation was no fun for me because I was in pain during the whole two-week trip. I ended up making an appointment the day we got home to see a doctor for a check-up. That was definitely not what I consider fun or a great vacation, and it really put a dent in our sightseeing plans.

  • 29、As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach. Eventually, my mother would come to the rescue. She’d ask the other kids if I could play, too. Today, I feel comfortable giving public lectures in large halls and having conversations in small groups, but I still tend to avoid situations in which I’m expected to spend time with a roomful of strangers.

There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.

A new research paper reports that the common concern that new people may not like us, or that they may not enjoy our company, is largely unfounded.

Erica Boothby of Cornell University and her colleagues conducted a series of studies to find out what our conversation partners really think of us. In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.

The researchers observed the gap in a variety of situations: strangers getting acquainted in the research laboratory, first-year college students getting to know their dormitory mates over the course of many months, and community members meeting fellow participants in personal development workshops. In each circumstance, people consistently underestimated how much others liked them. For much of the academic year, as dormitory mates got to know each other and even started to develop enduring friendships, the liking gap persisted.

The data also revealed some of the potential reasons for the illusion: we are often more severe with ourselves than with others, and our inner critic prevents us from appreciating how positively other people evaluate us. Not knowing what our conversation partners really think of us, we use our own thoughts as a proxy (代理人). This is a mistake, because our thoughts tend to be more negative than reality.

【1】Why does the author mention his childhood experience?

A.To show how his character changed.

B.To explain what he was like when he was young.

C.To show an example of why people are shy of communication.

D.To emphasize the important role of a mother in one’s childhood.

【2】What does the underlined word “unfounded” probably mean?

    A.Careless.

    B.Baseless.

    C.Selfless.

    D.Meaningless.

【3】What do we know about the liking gap from the text?

A.It indicates what strangers really think of us.

B.It begins and ends quickly among strangers.

C.It disappears when strangers get to know each other.

D.It states our misunderstanding of how much others like us.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for this text?

A.People Like You More than You Know

B.How to Get Along Well with Strangers

C.The Way to Know What Others Think of Us

D.Having Conversations with Strangers Benefits Us
