26、I took the bus to work for many years. No one knew each other; the passengers all sat there sleepily in the morning. The bus was cheerless and silent.
One of the passengers was a small gray-haired man who took the bus to the center for senior citizens every morning. No one ever paid very much attention to him.
One July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled. The driver nodded guardedly(戒备地). The rest of us were silent.
The next day, the old man boarded with a big smile and said in a loud voice: “A very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good Morning” in reply.
The following weeks, our friend was dressed in a nice old suit and tie. His thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other.
One morning he even had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver turned around smiling and asked: “Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie?” We never got to know if his name really was “Charlie”, but he nodded shyly and said yes. The other passengers whistled and clapped at him. Charlie waved the flowers before he sat down on his seat.
Every morning after that Charlie always brought flowers. Some passengers also brought flowers for him. The bus became a happy place.
Then, one morning, as autumn was closing in, Charlie wasn’t waiting at his usual stop. When he wasn’t there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or—hopefully – on holiday somewhere.
When we came nearer to the center for senior citizens, one of the passengers asked the driver to wait. We all held our breaths when he went to the door.
The old gentle man was fine, but one of his close friends had died over the weekend. How silent we were the rest of the way to work.
The next Monday Charlie was waiting at the stop, stooping (弯腰) a bit more, a little bit more gray, and without a tie. Inside the bus was silent. Even though no one had talked about it, all of us sat there silently, our eyes filled with tears and a bunch of wild flowers in our hands.

27、If a cat or dog shares your house, I’ll guess that you don’t refer to the four-footed family member who licks(舔) your face and sleeps on your bed as “it”. You probably call them by a name, and refer to them as “he” or “she”.
A group of more than 80 people, including Dr. Jane Goodall, have signed a letter calling on the editors of the Associated Press Stylebook to rewrite their guidance so that animals in news stories would be recognized as “she/her/hers and he/him/his when their sex is known, and they, or he/she, or his/hers when their sex is unknown.” News organizations often follow the guidance of the AP Stylebook. The signers of this letter hope that when we write about animals in zoos, fields, farms, forests, seas and labs, they are recognized as living beings who feel hunger, fear, happiness and pain. “This update would reflect the fact that animals have feelings, and encourage people to respect and protect them and their rights and interests, and to shape a fairer world,” says Jane.
Ben Dreyer, copy chief at Random House, says thoughtful adjustments to our language don’t have to wait for a stylebook. “Writers should write the way they see fit to write,” he says. “The so-called genderless(无性别的) ‘he’ for example is now a thing of the past because writers haven’t used it.”
Laura Hillenbrand, author of Seabiscuit and other best-selling books, tells us that if we don’t refer to animals in a personal way, we open ourselves to ignoring and abusing(虐待) creatures whose ability of suffering is no less than our own. “We form beautiful relationships with them, and we place animals on a moral plane alongside ourselves and far above that of the stone or the cap, the things we call ‘it’.” she says.

28、With the belief that “Schools should not frighten children”, David Schenck founded the Schenck School for some special children in Atlanta, Georgia, to help children overcome their trouble and recover their lost self-esteem.
Growing up in Chappaqua, New York, David started out in public school, and had trouble right from the very beginning. He didn’t feel like he was part of the class and didn’t feel like he could do any of the things they did. An uncle paid the tuition for him to go to The Salisbury School in Connecticut. “They had never seen someone so poorly prepared for their school,” he says. “I had to go back a couple of years because I didn’t know anything about reading and writing. I was trying to go to the 7th grade, but having lots of trouble there. I graduated when I was 20, directly to the Army, and from the Army I took advantage of the G. I. Bill (军人安置法案) and got a degree from University of Michigan.”
When David left for a teaching position in New England, he did not know that this move would change his life and the lives of thousands of young people with dyslexia—nor did he know, at that time, that he had such trouble. He worked with The Rectory School in Connecticut, which wanted him to work during the regular school year and at a camp during the summer. The camp was for dyslexics and it was there that David received his formal introduction to dyslexia and training in the Orton-Gillingham approach.
After a few years at the camp, David returned to Atlanta. He earned his master’s degree in education at Emory University and landed a teaching job at Georgia Military Academy. He was charged with teaching students how to read and write. From that environment, the idea for The Schenck School was born. 29、An Unexpected Storm
This is a story about an extreme storm in Moscow. It happened two and a half years ago. It was the first time in my life that I saw such a strong storm. For Moscow, it was very unusual, and nobody predicted this storm before it happened.
It was a sunny day in July, and I was at home alone watching TV. The windows and the door to the balcony were wide open because the weather was so hot.
Suddenly, I felt a strong wind from outside. I wanted to close the window and came near. I looked out of the window and saw a black sky and trees blowing over because of the strong wind. I tried to close the window, but the wind made me fall down. I was afraid that the glass might break.
I stood up and tried to close the window again, but it was not possible because the wind was now stronger, and it was pushing the window open. I ran into the bathroom and took the mop to close the window. It worked.
When I looked outside, the tree in front of my window was flat on the ground, and there was strong thunder and lightning. I decided to pull out all the electrical plugs, which took about 10 seconds. A sportsman would have envied my speed.
When I finished, I looked outside. It was terrible, and I understood how people are helpless compared to the power of nature.
Suddenly, the wind stopped, and it began to hail(下冰雹). The ice was the size of grapes. After 10 minutes, everything stopped, and the sun shone as before. It was strange. A few minutes later, the phone began to ring every five minutes. It was my friends or relatives. We asked each other how it was and how we felt after the storm.
Many trees died because of the storm. For a few days, the people helped clean parks and gardens. Some people's cars were damaged by trees falling on them. After one week, it was history already. This is my story about an extreme storm in Moscow. It shows us that we are children of nature, and we must respect her.
