26、 As a saying goes, “Don’t use a lot where a little will do.” I recently saw a reality show about helping change struggling restaurants. An expert came in to help save a family business, and in the process helped the owners rebuild their relationships and their lives. In the beginning, the expert suggested the family reduce their menu from multiple pages to just one. They originally created a long list of selections because they thought this created more value. But in many instances, less is more.
This is a big part of the philosophy(哲学)behind the website—Tiny Buddha. I publish one post from the community every day, which allows me to spend a great deal of time with writers. Traditional wisdom of the web suggests that more content(内容)leads to more page views, which eventually creates a successful site. Yet I've found the opposite is true.
Having a lower quantity allows more time to focus on quality, and also allows more time for connection through comments. In this way, it’s not about building a large community; it’s about developing and improving an engaged(使用中)one. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no greater success than that. Regardless of your project or dream, the “less is more” philosophy can go a long way in creating value and enabling progress.
You may not have a large number of hours to commit, but this means you are encouraged to decide which of your goals is in the first place, and that just may help you focus and become more effective. You may not have many resources, but this means your passion and purpose may be your greatest possession, and there’s no limit to what you can achieve when you devote yourself to something that moves and inspires you. You may not have countless readers or customers, but this means you can focus on providing excellent service, which can be far more valuable than dozens of cursory(粗略的)connections.
Most importantly, when we focus on doing less and doing it well, we are more attentive. And really, isn’t that what we want? It’s not just the goals and the outcomes we imagine; it’s the happiness and satisfaction we imagine we'll experience when we get there. It may be the biggest advantage to do less: we create more space to enjoy those things now.

27、When you think of a museum, I bet you don’t think of a place where children run around. But the Science Museum is different. It’s noisy!
You can get to the Science Museum by going on the London Underground from Waterloo on the Jubilee line to Westminster. Then take the Circle or the District line to South Kensington. When you walk out, take a look around you, and you should see it.
What to bring: at least two bottles of a drink for the kids and £10 to spend in the cafes. Entrance is free!
The most interesting and exciting part of coming here is to go to the kids’ area, the Launch Pad on the 3rd floor. At busy times, you may have to wait in line, but staff (工作人员) will provide science toys for you and the kids to play with. It is great fun in there. And if you love science, it should indulge (满足) you as you will learn about science in a fun way. There are also simulators (模拟装置) on the 3rd floor, so think of Floor 3 as a “fun floor”.
If you want to learn about the museum, then go to the ground floor. They have some things which will interest you.

28、It is projected that by the year 2050, the urban population in the world will increase by 2.5 billion. The big question is not how many people can reside in an urban area, but how we can build sustainable and livable cities. 【1】
Reducing transport emissions is the first step towards sustainable development. A safe and reliable transport system is fundamental to economic growth. However, the fuel driven cars and other petroleum-dependent means of transportation are quite alarming. They are a major source of carbon dioxide emissions. 【2】 In a sustainable city model, the use of zero-emission electric vehicles is practicable. Besides, encouraging people to walk or cycle around the city is also a reasonable sustainable development model.
【3】 Parks and gardens go a long way in making a city livable and residents can get a green place to relax and walk freely. In the big cities, more green spaces are being set aside for recreational purposes. 【4】 These green spaces, forming a mini forest, can reduce air pollution and CO2 emissions and enhance air quality.
Improving the sewer system(排水系统) is also important to clean up our environment. 【5】 One reason is that streets, buildings and sidewalks are waterproof. So the rainwater only flows on the surface. As a way to deal with and adapt to urban flooding, sewer systems and stormwater networks should be improved. This is much more urgent and practical. Because the old infrastructure cannot serve the new paradigm of rapid environmental change.
A.Urban centers tend to be easily flooded.
B.Recycling waste is important to make our environment clean.
C.Therefore, proper planning needs to be done to ensure a city is livable.
D.Expanding green space is at the center of developing a sustainable city.
E.This is a threat not only to air quality but also to sustainable urban living.
F.Trees and bushes line almost all streets and neighbourhoods of these cities.
G.A sustainable city needs environmentally friendly buildings and green space.
29、 It was a hot summer day a few years ago. I had just pulled into the local gas station to fill my tank. After pumping the gas I started to walk inside to pay. That is when I noticed them. Two elderly women were standing back from their car. There was a mixture of shock and fear on their faces. I looked and saw what they saw. Five wasps (黄蜂) had started to build a nest (巢) around their gas cap. My eyes widened. I shared the ladies’ fear.
Wasps had never been friends of mine. Several times they had attacked me while I was working in my backyard giving me stings (叮咬) each time I ran over their ground nests. They are the reason I never work in shorts anymore. The worst time, however, happened when I was a young boy. A friend of mine and me were running and playing in my backyard. I must have stepped on one of their hidden nests again because before I knew it both of us were being chased and stung over and over by the wasps while we ran away screaming. I ran to my Mom with tears in my eyes. She immediately ran a cold bath and put us both in it to lessen the pain before giving us medicine to fight all the poison in our little bodies from the stings.
Still, I knew I couldn’t let fear stop me now. I reached into my back pocket for a paper towel I had there, tore out the nest and stepped on it while the angry wasps buzzed around me. Both of the ladies thanked me and I said, “You’re welcome!” with a smile and a happy heart.

The most powerful earth quake in the past 40 years caused a tsunami that crashed into coastlines across Asia yesterday, killing more than 6,500 people in Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and at least four other countries. Fishermen, tourists, hotels, homes, and cars were swept away by huge waves caused by the strong earthquake that reached a magnitude of 9.0. The undersea quake struck around 7:00 a.m., Sunday off the west coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island. In that area alone, at least 1,870 people were killed.
In Sri Lanka, some 1,600 kilometres west of the quake centre, the number of deaths stood at 2,498, and one million more were affected by the tsunami, government officials said. Indian officials said as many as 1,900 had been killed along the southern coast. Another 254 were found dead in Thailand and 54 in three other countries. In southern Thailand, 1,900 people were hurt and many more were missing, local officials said. I was having breakfast with my three children when water started filling my home. We had to leave everything and run to safety, said Chandra Theeravit, a local Thai woman.
Thousands of people are still missing, and the number of deaths is expected to grow even higher over the next few days. Foreign aid is being organised for the tsunami-hit countries. However, dangerous conditions and damaged roads will make it difficult to deliver food and supplies.
