二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Two high school students have identified four new planets in distant space about 200-light-years from Earth, making them “the youngest astronomers” to make such a discovery.

Kartik Pingle, 16, and Jasmine Wright, 18, who both attend schools in Massachusetts, participated in the Student Research Mentoring Program (SRMP). With the help of Tansu Daylan, an MIT doctor for Astrophysics and Space Research, the students studied and analyzed data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Together they focused on Tess Object of Interest (TOI) 1233, a nearby, bright sun-like star and here they found four planets rotating (旋转) around the star. “We were looking to see changes in light over time,” Pingle explained, “the idea is that if the planet transits the star, or passes in front of it, it would periodically cover up the star and decrease its brightness.”

While studying 1233, Pingle and Wright had at least hoped to find one planet, but were overwhelmed with joy when a total of four were spotted. “I was very excited and very shocked.” Wright said. “We knew this was the goal of Daylan's research, but to actually find a multi-planetary system, and be part of the discovering team, was really cool."

Three of the newly discovered planets are considered as “sub-Neptunes”, which are gaseous (气态的), but smaller than the Neptune that lives in our solar system. While observing the planets, the team determined each one completes their orbit around 1233 every six to 19.5 days. However, the fourth planet is labeled a “super-Earth” for its large size and rockiness---this one orbits around the star in just under four days.

“We have long been studying planets beyond our solar system and with multi-planetary systems, the two young students are kind of hitting the jackpot. They are really blessed.” Daylan said, “The planets originated from the same disk of matter around the same star, but they ended up being different planets with different atmospheres and different climates due to their different orbits. So, we would like to understand the fundamental processes of planet formation and evolution using this planetary system.”

Daylan added that it was a “win-win" to work with Pingle and Wright on the study. “As a researcher, I really enjoy interacting with young brains that are open to experimentation and learning and have minimal bias.” he said, “I also think it is very beneficial to high school students, since they get exposure to cutting-edge research and this prepares them quickly for a research career.”

【1】How did the two students identify the four planets?

A.By helping professor Tansu Daylan with the data.

B.By analyzing the change of brightness of star 1233.

C.By studying Neptune that lives in our solar system.

【3】Which of the following is closest in meaning to “hitting the jackpot” in paragraph 5?

    A.Making a discovery difficultly.

    B.Achieving the goal easily.

    C.Succeeding in something luckily.

    D.Performing a task carefully.

【4】According to the article, what benefits does the study bring?

B.It equips future astronomers with better researching capabilities.

C.It provides more perspectives and thus boosts more discoveries.

D.It arouses students’ interest in exploring the unknown universe.

  • 27、   Many primary school students in Jiangsu Province suffered from such symptoms as nosebleeds, dizziness and rashes after attending schools that recently installed plastic running tracks on their playgrounds. Parents of primary school students in several cities reported similar symptoms in their children after school began in September, 2015.

The provincial educational department said on Wednesday that schools with these plastic tracks must have professionals carry out tests. It sent a team of experts to look into the whole work of the building of the tracks. Any illegal behavior will be punished without mercy.

Chen Yun, a teacher in Wuxi, said no organization could provide the school with an official test report for its track. “The local disease control center said they can examine and analyze the air in an enclosed space, such as classrooms and washrooms. But they cannot test in open spaces,” Chen said. Local environmental protection centers have also refused to test the air around the plastic running tracks.

According to the Jiangsu Environmental Protection Bureau, China has no standards for the running track industry, which will make the air measurements useless as there are no data in determining whether the air is polluted. Besides, materials used to build the tracks are not tested when they are produced at factories because of, also, NO industry standards! So what we have to do now is, of course, that these measures should be made in no time.

Ye Ping, director of Taizhou Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute, said harmful things in plastic running tracks may lead to diseases. “The plastic tracks in China are mainly made up of polyurethane, a kind of nontoxic material,” said Ye. “However, suppliers may add toxic adhesives. They give a bad smell and may cause dizziness and rashes. Some suppliers may also add a kind of material that helps the plastic to solidify, but the lead contained in it will raise lead levels above normal in children’s blood after longtime exposure.”

Ye added that the country has not put forward rules about the examination of volatile organic compounds given off by tracks.

The Jiangsu educational department has suggested that middle schools in Nanjing grow natural grass on their playgrounds.

    1According to Chen Yun, ______.

A.parents of primary school students firstly reported problems about their children.

B.no official reports about the tracks could be got at the moment.

C.local environmental protection centers worked hard to find out the causes.

D.there are no standards for the running track industry at present.

2Who believes it is the harmful things in the tracks that may cause the problems?

    A.Ye Ping B.experts C.Chen Yun D.parents

3Which of the following statements can be called a Fact instead of an Opinion?

A.Without standards for the running track industry, the air measurements might be useless.

B.The schools with these plastic tracks must have professionals carry out tests.

C.Many primary school students suffered from nosebleeds after attending schools.

D.Middle schools in Nanjing should grow natural grass on their playgrounds.

4Based on the analysis, who deserves to be punished for the sick students?

    A.The primary schools B.Some suppliers

C.The educational department D.The disease control center

5What work does the writer think should be done at once according to the passage?

A.Experts should be sent to test the materials of the tracks.

B.Students should be examined to find the reasons for their illnesses.

C.The plastic running tracks should be removed to grow natural grass instead.

D.The measures for the running track industry should be worked out.

  • 29、There have been big changes in the attitudes of most parents over the last few years. Physical punishment is banned in schools in most countries, and in many countries, there are moves to ban all physical punishment of children even at home. However, many parents still believe that they have the right to use physical punishment to deal with certain misbehavior at certain ages.

It's easy to find reasons to allow physical punishment. One issue is that many parents find it very difficult to give up physical punishment completely. Parents argue that this is the way they were brought up and that it didn't do any harm to them. They believe that they have the right to punish the child in any way they consider fit, including using physical punishment. The other one is that physical punishment can be quick and effective. There is not much point reasoning with a screaming child in the supermarket.

However, there are several reasons why we should stop using physical punishment. One point is that most parents are not trained to deal with misbehaving children. They don't have enough resources or choices to handle the situation. As a result, they immediately react by hitting the child even if there are other solutions to the problem. Another point is that unless people are challenged or forced to change their belief, they may keep following negative habits. An example is the use of seat belts-now most people wear seat belts without thinking, while years ago the idea of using seat belts was strange to most people. In the same way, banning physical punishment will force people to change their habits.

In conclusion, parents have to change some of their beliefs and ideas about how children should be raised. It is possible to avoid the use of physical force, and doing so will help us move closer to the dream of removing violence from our society.

【1】According to the first paragraph, many parents think ________ .

A.most of the children behave badly in their daily life

B.they have changed their attitudes towards their children

C.physical punishment is effective when educating their children

D.they are free to use physical punishment on their children

【2】The author gives the example of using seat belts in order to show________.

A.most people are used to wearing seat belts recently

B.people won't change their old habits unless they have to

C.seat belts are really very necessary and useful for drivers

D.it's not difficult to change some of the negative habits

【3】The author wrote this passage mainly to________.

A.talk about a ban on using physical punishment

B.tell readers that we should educate our children in other ways

C.advise parents to give up using physical punishment

D.suggest physical punishment should be used only at home
