二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、I bought the most delightful tangerine (柑橘) yesterday. It was plump and firm. At this wintry and white time of year, I wanted color and juice. When I bit into that perfect tangerine, I tasted happiness and an explosion of memory.

Nearly 30 years ago, my family spent several months in India. We were tired during one of our trips and were covered in a fine layer of dust. We quite enjoyed our cheap train meals, but everything looked brown. Even the landscape looked dry.

Suddenly the train pulled into a rare area of green, and colorfully dressed women carrying oranges came aboard. These oranges were covered in a layer of cool moisture (潮湿) and they breathed fresh air into our train car. Immediately, the color and sweetness and the female presence brought life and hope. We bought a dozen and spent the rest of our trip eating the most delicious oranges we had ever tasted.

They reminded me of another orange experience I had had when I was an art student in Toronto. I had caught a glimpse of the grocers (杂货店) and some cooking supply shops in Chinatown, an area I was living close to. And there were navel oranges (脐橙) ... huge, fresh and firm oranges whose peels almost fell off before your eyes. I have never seen oranges like them later again. Maybe these oranges truly no longer exist. In the fish-and-chip shop, they had an old orange juice machine that put orange juice into glass bottles. It was very refreshing when drunk with your order.

    Sigh.

So much has changed since then. I am no longer a young art student. There is a pandemic. Hustle and bustle (熙熙攘攘) don’t exist for the moment. But oranges and fish and chips still do. Tiny pleasures are so good.

【1】Why did the author mention one of her trips in India?

A.To tell why oranges in India are tasty.

B.To explain why she loves to eat oranges.

C.To share one of her good memories of oranges.

D.To recall the happy days spent with her family.

【2】How did the fish-and-chip shop in a Chinatown in Toronto impress the author?

A.They sold different kinds of fruits.

B.They added orange juice to their dishes.

    C.They provided freshly-made orange juice.

D.They were equipped with automatic orange peelers.

【3】What message does the author want to tell us in this article?

A.Fruit is good for our health.

B.The pandemic has ruined our lives.

C.We have to adapt to changes in life.

D.We should cherish the small joys in life.

  • 27、In 2017, Jim McGee was diagnosed with a kidney(肾) illness, and he was told by the doctors that he could only live about four years. Therefore, he was in bad need of a kidney transplant(移植). However, it was said that 13 people would die every day while waiting for a right kidney with the right blood and tissue types. Jim’s wife, Shirley McGee, and some family friends offered but weren’t a match.

In order to seek for help, Shirley and her husband wore T-shirts with a sentence “I’m in need of a kidney transplant.” whenever they went out but still no luck. Jim lost heart.

In early 2018, Jim didn’t feel like attending a reunion of some classmates, saying there was no need to do this. However, Shirley said, “Come on. You really need to see your friends. Go, and enjoy yourself.” Then, Jim reunited with some old classmates, whom he hadn’t seen for nearly 50 years, including Doug Coffman. Jim told them his problem. As life would have it, Doug Coffman, then 70, happened to have the right blood type and immediately decided to help.

After a series of tests, finally, when the doctors gave Doug Coffman the OK to donate, he immediately called Jim, and told him the good news. On September 18, 2018, Doug went into surgery at 7: 30 a. m.; Jim followed at 9: 30 a.m. By noon, they were both in the recovery room. The transplant was a great success.

  • 28、About 12 years ago, I began making a series of dolls called “Wee Mountain Folk.” At first, I made them from cloth but then began using a kind of polymer clay(软陶)called cernit. The cloth dolls were beautiful, but it was impossible to get the level of detail(细节)I can get with clay.

First, I use wire(金属丝)to build the shape of the doll. Then I cover the head, hands, and feet around the wire using the cernit. Then I make the doll’s clothes myself, using lots of different materials. The completed dolls are fixed onto hardwood bases made by my father, Jim Logan.

Generally, the dolls I make show older people taking part in traditional activities. I’ve always had a great respect for the older generation.

Inspiration for the dolls often comes from people I know. Once I was caught looking too closely at the wrinkles(皱纹)on the face of one of my mom’s friends. But I explained that her laugh lines made her more attractive.

Now I work as a teacher’s assistant, and while I was raising my two daughters, Keri and Sheryl, I could work on the dolls only late in the day. The girls loved to come downstairs the next morning to see who’d arrived in the night.

It’s the detail that I enjoy working on the most. I once made a fisherman doll for a lady to give her father, including a tiny creel a basket used by fishermen for carrying fish. When the man got the doll, he immediately opened the creel to see what was inside. Luckily, I’d made a small fish out of cernit and placed it in the basket.

Hopefully my story will inspire others to try their hand at doll making I find it very relaxing and interesting.

【1】The dolls called “Wee Mountain Folk” were ________.

    A. totally hand made

    B. mainly made of cloth

    C. usually small kids

    D. often designed by the author’s father

【2】Why did the author look closely at her mother’s friend’s face?

    A. To guess her age.

    B. To get creative ideas.

    C. To give her a surprise.

    D. To find out why she was so attractive.

    【3】The author’s daughters ________.

    A. thought doll making was a waste of time

    B. thought the dolls’ styles were too old

    C. showed great interest in the dolls

    D. paid little attention to the dolls

【4】The author tells the story of the fisherman doll to show that ________.

    A. it takes much effort to make a doll

    B. it is difficult to satisfy everyone

    C. the old also love her dolls

    D. her dolls have fine details

    Relax yourself

    Think when you're listening

    The Sculptor Speaks

Appreciation of sculpture depends upon the ability to respond to form in three dimensions(维度). That is perhaps why sculpture has been described as the most difficult of all arts; certainly it is more difficult than the arts which involve 1 of flat forms, shape in only two dimensions. Many more people are ‘form-blind’ than color-blind. Children learning to see, first distinguishes only two-dimensional shape; it cannot judge distances, depths. Later, for their personal safety and practical needs, they have to develop partly by 2 of touch, the ability to judge roughly three-dimensional distances. But after they 3 the requirements of practical necessity, most people go no further. Though they may 4 considerable accuracy in the perception(知觉,感知) of flat form, they do not make the further intellectual and emotional effort needed to 5 form in its full spatial existence.

This is what the sculptor must do. He must 6 continually to think of, and use, form in its full spatial completeness. He gets the solid shape, as it were, inside his head—he thinks of it, whatever its size, as if he were holding it completely in the hollow of his hand. He 7 visualizes a complex form from all round itself; he knows while he looks at one side what the other side is like, he will have to 8 himself with its centre of gravity, its mass, its weight; and he realizes its volume, as the space that the shape displaces in the air.

And the sensitive observer of sculpture must also learn to feel shape simply as 9, not as description or reminiscence(回忆,联想). He must, for example, see an egg as a simple single solid shape, quite apart from its significance as food, or from the 10 idea that it will become a bird. And so with solids such as a shell, a nut, a plum, a pear, a tadpole, a mushroom, a mountain peak, a kidney, a carrot, a tree-trunk, a bird, a bud, a lark, a ladybird, a bulrush, a bone. From these he can go on to appreciate more complex forms of combinations of several forms.
