26、Walker, a farmer, at 55, was the oldest of the competitors and finished third in this year’s 1,000 km race across the grassland — The Mongol Derby.
The Mongol Derby, described by the organizers, as the world’s toughest horse endurance (耐力) race, began in 2009 as an event held every year but was cancelled in 2021 and 2022. Competitors race between checkpoints 35 km apart, where they change horses. They spend nights at one of 28 stations, set up their own camp or enjoy the hospitality (好客) of friendly Mongolian families.
Walker was an hour ahead of his rivals (对手) as the race entered its eighth day but dealt with a time punishment because his horse had a high heart rate during one of the regular checks which make sure that the animals were healthy. “I was in the lead for a long time but I had a bad vet check,” Walker said. “They check the heart rate of your horse to see if it is above 56 beats per minute. I picked a horse that had a bit of a problem.”
Walker said he had gone to Mongolia to “give it a go” but realized that he stood a chance of winning after teaming up with Patrick Heffron, a competitor from Ireland. “The horses are quite wild. I got bucked (颠) off three times. I fell off in a hole,” he said. “You’re going along and you suddenly disappear. You have to hang on to your horse for dear life or it goes off.”
Heffron met Walker as they went out for the race. He said it was important to form a team, mainly because falling off alone means that there is no one to help you recover your horse. “It’s also a bloody long way to talk to yourself,” Heffron said, “Neither of us had goals to win this race in advance but we realized: ‘We’re in front.’ So we pushed.”

27、In March 2020, a group of 16 strong elephants became international stars because of their starting long northern journey from Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province.
The group did not harm any people or animals during their long march, but caused chaos on farms. In December, a baby elephant was born.
The wild group was seen on CCTV walking down the streets of the city at night, and they were also filmed constantly by more than a dozen drones (无人机)—which, the Chinese government said, were helping to minimize damage and keep the animals and people out of danger.
The group had a sudden attack on farms for food and water and even showed up at a care home, where they reached out their trunks into some of the rooms, making one elderly man hide under his bed. Meanwhile, reports said the damage caused to crops totaled more than £700,000.
In April 2021, seventeen animals were originally in the group, but the government said two returned home during the walk.
There were many guesses about the reasons for the migration (迁徙) of the elephants. Some people thought the elephants appeared to be especially attracted to com, fruit and other crops. Others supposed that the elephants’ leader might simply be lost in the rich tropical region, which is home to about 300 other Asian elephants. But, in fact, there was no exact scientific explanation.
In order not to do any harm to the species, farmers and others were told to exercise maximum control when they met with them, while the government had ordered people to stay inside and not use firecrackers or other techniques to frighten them away. Less force was being used to keep them out of the city, like parking cars and some equipment to block roads and using food drops to attract them away.
More than 410 emergency response police, lots of vehicles and 14 drones had been used to monitor the group. Locals were evacuated (疏散); short-time traffic control measures were carried out, and two tons of elephant food was put in place. Finally, this group of migrating elephants returned to their wild living areas safely under the protection of everyone.

28、Parents are fighting for their child’s right to rest across the country. Twenty-three elementary schools in Orange County, Florida, have been cutting back on rest, and even canceling it to increase class time.
In a recent Orange County School Board meeting, parents demanded that rest time be carried out in all local schools for all students. Angela Browning, a parent in the area, said that schools’ rest is ranging from zero to 30 minutes per day. “Five-year-olds not getting rest means abuse,” said Browning, whose twins in the second grade benefit from taking a break and learn better.
“The main reason for reducing the rest time is Common Core exams including math, language arts and literacy, where the students’ performance often controls teachers’ pay and sometimes teachers may lose their jobs. Many teachers are using that extra 20 minutes that would have been spent on the schools’ scores, everybody is stressful,” said Diana Moore, president of the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association.
The decision of whether reducing rest takes place, and for how long is up to each school’s rule. “Florida law requires that districts provide 900 teaching hours during the school year,” Florida’s Department of Education press secretary Cheryl Etters said in a statement. “Whether test is part of the school day is a decision made by the school board.”
Reducing test also can take away an opportunity for children to learn social skills, according to many experts. “In society, who cares if you have straight A’s and you get a scholarship to Harvard if you lack social skills?” said Mallet, a mother of two children.
【1】What will Angela Browning agree with?
A.Kids of five years old had better get more break time.
B.Proper rest time improves children’s learning efficiency.
C.The more rest children have, the higher grades they will get.
D.Elementary schools should limit kids’ rest time to 30 minutes.
【2】What drives so many teachers to reduce students’ rest time?
A.Parents’ demand.
B.Students’ lack of social skills.
C.Students’ bad behavior.
D.The link between their pay and school’s scores.
【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Social skills are more important than high scores.
B.Whether students get A’s in school is very important.
C.Graduates from Harvard can’t find good jobs.
D.Rest time has nothing to do with students’ social skills
【4】What’s the main idea of the text?
A.The government is to order schools to increase rest time.
B.Students expect to get more time to play in school.
C.Parents struggle for the rest right for their kids in school.
D.Teachers’ pay is related to their performance in teaching.
29、Thanks to the hard work of companies like California-based Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC), space tourism is well on its way to coming true. Now, the company is working to offer a chance for space visitors to “get out of the world” by checking into the world’s first true hotel in low Earth orbit (轨道).
The 650-foot-wide Ferris-wheel-like Voyager Space Station (VSS) will be made up of two rings connected together. The inside circle will be fitted with spacecraft stations for guests while the outside ring will house the rooms, restaurants, bars, gyms, and scientific research labs. The hotel powered by the sun will travel at high speeds to create artificial gravity (人造重力), providing tourists a comfortable stay. When completed, it will have rooms for up to 400 people.
While the idea is attractive, making VSS a reality will take time and money. The team is now building a smaller prototype (雏形) ring. Once finished, OAC engineers will attempt to create artificial gravity. Transporting the VSS to space will cost thousands of millions of dollars. However, OAC believes that they will recoup the money by asking $5 million per person for each 3-day stay. Though the cost may seem too high, it is cheap compared to the 55 million it costs to stay on the ISS (International Space Station). Besides, guests at the Voyager Station will be living in the greatest conditions.
“You’re going to have the top cooks making really good food,’’ Orbital CEO John Blincow told the Washington Post. “There’ll be two shows every night as well.” Visitors will also be able to take part in the activities that are not possible on Earth such as spacewalks which allows visitors to admire views of Earth and space.
If everything goes according to plan, the company plans to start work in 2026 and welcome the first visitors in 2027. “If you are eager to be among the first, you can pay an amount of money to save your place ahead of time,” added John Blincow.
【1】What do we know about the VSS?
A.It will be powered by electricity.
B.It will be made up of two squares.
C.It can travel fast to escape Earth gravity.
D.It can provide Earth-like living conditions.
【2】What does the underlined word “recoup” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Recover.
B.Waste.
C.Spend.

A.To praise the hard work of OAC.
B.To show the high-end service of the VSS.
C.To stress the importance of exploring space.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?
