二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Over the holidays, I took my three young children into a fancy chocolate shop to buy gifts. Halfway home, I noticed my 7-year-old son playing with a plastic noisemaker. Long story short: He had stolen the toy. I kept my cool -- even when he said, "but it was only $1.50, Mom!" --and explained why it was unacceptable to take things we didn't buy.

A few hours later, I marched my son back to the store with two dollars from his piggy bank. He walked embarrassedly to the counter and told the clerk that he had taken something without paying for it, that he was sorry to break it and that he would pay for it now.

I know exactly how terrible he was feeling. Returning to the scene of the crime is the same shame-causing punishment I received when I was five and stole something from a store. 1 remember my dad sending me back to return the item. It remains one of my clearest child- hood memories. After that day, I never stole again. My dad taught me such an important lesson 30 years ago and I saw an opportunity to do the same for my son. But now I wonder if it was the fight thing to do.

"Returning to the store is absolutely the right thing to do," Laura Markham, Ph.D., a child psychologist and author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids, says. "Many children steal -- they' re not born knowing the rules so it' s our job to teach them."

And stay calm when you set them. "If you overreact or yell, you might create a fascination with the behavior and a willful child will be more likely to fight against you," she  says. Having a child physically return the stolen item helps him or her grasp the situation -- and the consequence.

But don't talk about it for too long. "lf you continuously bring up the incident, the child will believe they' re a thief and that they' re bad," she says.

Only time will tell if this experience will have the same powerful effect on my son as it had on me, but at the same time I can rest if I haven' t dealt with the situation badly.

【1】When the author' s son was caught playing with a stolen toy, he________.

    A. responded calmly

    B. felt very ashamed

    C. didn't think it was a big deal

    D. didn't admit stealing the toy

【2】The author punished her son like that because __________.

    A. her father asked her to do so

    B. it had been popular for 30 years

    C. she knew it was the right thing to do

    D. the same punishment had worked on her

【3】According to Laura Markham, if parents shout at their kids' stealing behavior, the kids may _______.

    A. feel frightened

    B. steal again

    C. think they are bad

    D. remember what happened clearly

【4】What does the author think of Laura Markham' s words?

    A. They are doubtful.

    B. They are unacceptable.

    C. They help her to stop feeling worried.

    D. They have taught her a good lesson.

  • 28、The pursuit of happiness

What is happiness?1However, most of us would probably agree that happiness is a feeling that life is good, that our surroundings are a bit brighter and more beautiful than usual, and that we’re in harmony with family and friends.

For our ancestors, being happy was not a priority(优先考虑的事情). While the concept of happiness has been around for thousands of years, for much of that time, humans were simply struggling to survive.2Today, though, most of us regard happiness as something we have a right to, and therefore something to be actively pursued(追求).

The increasing interest in the topic is being given extra weight by the realization that material wealth alone is not making us happier. In 1974, the US economist Richard Easterlin carried out some research on happiness.  3Then economists and social scientists got to work trying to find out what---if not material wealth---makes us happy.

There is no final answer, but Richard Layard, a professor at the London School of Economics, suggests that our relationships, work satisfaction and mental health are more important for us as individuals than how much we earn.4

For individuals in search of a better life, the market for books on happiness is booming(繁荣). In 2018, three million self-help books were sold in the UK. Each book promises a great new life. But is there a book that looks at whether self-help books actually work? 5It’s called Help Me!: How self-help has not changed my life.

    A.Yes. There is!

    B.They knew nothing about happiness.

C.Happiness can mean something different to each of us.

D.As societies, we are happier if there is social trust and freedom.

E.It was almost impossible for them to think about quality of life.

F.Of course, I found a lot of titles of self-help books in my local bookshop.

G.It showed that increased wealth did not seem to be making people happier.

    Vincent Van Gogh

Born in the Netherlands in 1853, van Gogh led a simple life in a small town until the age of 16. He then left school and joined a company of art business in the larger city. During the next seven years, van Gogh bought and sold paintings in the Netherlands, London, and Paris. He eventually realized that dealing with others’ artwork was not his dream. He soon discovered that his dream was to become an artist himself.

He spent much of his time in learning the basic skills of drawing. He believed that to become a great painter, one must first master the ability to draw. It was only after he was comfortable in this area that he began to use oil paints. That is when van Gogh developed a style for color that made him one of the most respected artists of all time.

Van Gogh’s paintings are amazing representations (代表) of his view of the world. He used his brush and oils to make layers that built the painting until it was almost three-dimensional (三维). This quality makes people want to reach out and touch the painting.

Perhaps one of the most memorable examples of van Gogh’s use of color and brush style is his painting The Starry Night. The sky swirls across the canvas (画布), while the stars glow with unearthly brightness. Each brushstroke (笔画) creates the movement and lights. Under the sky rests a village painted with smaller strokes and finer detail, giving the impression of peace. A large tree in the foreground suggests that the view is enjoyed from the top of a hill, which offers a glimpse of the majesty (庄严) of the night sky. The Starry Night displays the gift of van Gogh’s ability to create a powerful image with simple brush and oils.

Van Gogh spent only the last ten years of his life painting. Yet van Gogh today is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. His influence is strong; many painters mimic his style and use of color. His artwork can be found in museums all over the world.
