25、 Every new parent knows, or learns pretty quickly, that rocking can make that noisy baby fall asleep easily. But recently a new study has shown that rocking also helps grown-ups get a good night’s sleep.
“Adults may sleep better and remember more of what they have learned before when they are rocked to sleep,” says Aurore Perrault, a sleep researcher at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Rocking beds might provide a new way to help people with sleeping disorders and older people who often have trouble sleeping.
Her team had previously(先前) found that rocking helped people fall asleep when they had a short afternoon sleep.
To test if it helps at night too, 18 men and women with an average(平均的) age of 23 spent three nights sleeping in the lab. They got used to the lab on the first night. Then, on either the second or third night, they were rocked during the whole night. The bed they slept on was hung from posts at each corner, and pushed 10 cm to one side and back every 4 seconds.
The results showed that when the bed was rocked people fell asleep more easily and slept better. “They all thought that the rocking night was pleasant and relaxing,” says Perrault.
Before going to sleep, the volunteers had to memorize word pairs. The volunteers did better in morning tests after a night of gentle rocking sleep.
The team have no idea why it works. But they have also shown that mice sleep better too when rocked. Perrault says next she wants to see if the effect lasts as people get used to the rocking. She also wants to try it out on older people and those with sleeping disorders.
