25、 Detective fiction is popular in many countries. There are two kinds: stories in which private detectives solve a crime, usually a murder; and stories in which a police detective solve a crime. Both kinds of detective story are equally popular.
The first private detective---PI for private investigator in the USA---was probably Arson Lupin, a Frenchman. However, stories about this detective are not read nowadays. For most people the first, and perhaps the greatest, private detective, was the Englishman, Sherlock Holmes, a character created by the author Sir Author Conan Doyle. Also popular, although not so well-written, are the Perry Mason novels by Erle Stanley Gardner.
