二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Recent research shows the importance of friendship, and its influence on mental and physical health. Preschool friendships are helpful in developing social and emotional skills, increasing a sense of belonging and reducing stress. People who feel lonely tend to be more depressed, have more health problems and may have a shorter lifespan.

Paul Schwartz, a professor of psychology and child behavior expert, has noted the many benefits of childhood friendship. “Friendships significantly help the development of social skills, such as being sensitive to another’s viewpoints, and learning the rules of conversation and age-appropriate behaviors,” Schwartz said. More than half of the children with emotional behavioral problems have no friends or find difficulty interacting with peers.(同龄人).”

“Friends also have a powerful influence on a child’s good or poor school performance, and may also help encourage or discourage deviant(反常的) behaviors,” he continued. “Compared to children who lack friends, children with good friends have higher self-worth, act more socially, and can deal with life stresses and transitions(过渡期).”

Both boys and girls form strong attachments to others and both need social and emotional support. Unfortunately, stereotypes(固有形象) of boys often send the message that boys don’t feel as strongly or form the same type of attachments in their friendships, but this is wrong. It’s human nature to attach to certain people and want closeness and support from others, regardless of gender.

At Powell Elementary School in Washington, all the teachers make an effort to place children in classes with others with whom they have developed friendships. This is designed to help children maintain(维系) special relationships.

Jason Harris, a prekindergarten teacher at Powell, said efforts to place children in classes with their friends have proven to be beneficial. “This year I am sending half of my class to kindergarten,” Harris said. “They will probably be nervous in the fall but less so because they will have a few warm faces who are happy to see them when they step in that classroom for the first time.”

“I do not believe that children can learn if they do not feel comfortable and valued the classroom,” said Amy Symonds, another prekindergarten teacher at the school.

There’s no one-size-fits-all formula for friendship; people develop socially in different ways. There’s, however, ways to help children develop relationship skills that will build deep, meaningful connections with others. And it’s important to note that the benefits of friendship are based on quality, not quantity.

1What can we learn from Paul Schwartz's words?

A.Kids should stay away from friends who are bad influences.

B.Children who lack friends are less likely to be respected by peers.

C.The development of adults' social skills depends on preschool friendships.

D.Over half of children's behavioral problems are caused by their interaction with peers.

2What is the fixed idea that people have according to the text?

A.Girls don't need to form strong attachments to boys.

    B.Loneliness contributes a lot to a person's shorter lifespan.

C.Boys need less closeness and support from other than girls.

D.It's hard for boys and girls to form the same type of friendship.

3The strategy used at Powell Elementary School is to help children ________.

A.develop special relationships with their teachers

B.lessen their fears about the transition to a higher grade

C.learn as much social and cultural knowledge as possible

D.follow class rules and change age-in appropriate behaviors

4Following the last paragraph, the author would most probably further talk about ________.

A.when and where to develop friendships

B.what developing childhood friendships is for

C.how to help develop warm childhood friendships

D.whether to develop more childhood friendships or not

  • 27、The Value of Tears

Tears can ruin make-up, bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. They can leave you embarrassed and without energy. However, crying is a fact of life ... and tears are very useful. Even when you’re not crying, your eyes produce tears. These create a film (薄膜) over the eye’s surface. 【1】

Tears relieve stress, but we lend to fight them for all sorts of reasons. “People worry about showing their emotions. They’re afraid that once they lose control, they’ll never get it back,” explains psychologist Dorothy Rowe. “As children we were sometimes punished for shedding tears or expressing anger. As adults we still fear the consequences of showing emotions.”

Almost any emotion — good or bad, happy or sad — can cause tears. Crying is a way that we release built-up emotions. 【2】 It may explain why people who are afraid to cry often suffer more heart attacks than people cry more freely.

When some people become very stressed, however, they can’t cry. They may be feeling shock, anger, fear, or grief, but they repress the emotion. “Everyone has the need to cry,” says psychotherapist Vera Diamond. Sometime in therapy sessions, patients participate in crying exercise. 【3】 Diamond says it’s best to cry in safe, private places, like under the bed covers or in the car. That’s because many people get uncomfortable when others cry in front of them. In fact, they may be repressing their own need to cry.

In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate. 【4】 “But once you are safely behind closed doors, don’t just cry,” Diamond says, she suggests that you act out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as you like. It will help you feel better. “And,” she adds, “Once your tears have released the stress, you can begin to think of logical way to deal with the problem.”

Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. You should never be afraid to cry.

A.Tears help you when you feel you are ready to explode because of very strong feelings.

B.It is useful to reduce the nerve of our eyes and make them comfortable.

C.They practice crying so that they can get used to expressing emotion.

D.This film contains a substance that protects your eyes against infection.

E.They have brought a lot of benefits for treating patients.

F.It’s good to hold back tears during a tense business discussion.

  • 29、The skin under the eyes is delicate, which is why it sometimes appears sunken and has darker coloring than elsewhere on the face. Aging and health problems play a role in sunken eyes but other factors can contribute too, so it may affect younger people as well.

    Dehydration

The most common cause of sunken eyes is dehydration, or not having enough water in the body. Consuming too much coffee, soda, and prepackaged drinks may increase production of urine, which may lead to dehydration.

    Vitamin shortages

Shortages of vitamin C, vitamin K, and iron can cause eyes to become sunken. Vitamin C helps with absorbing iron and decreasing bruising, while vitamin K is responsible for blood thickening, the lack of which may cause unhealthy skin. Easy bruising and unhealthy skin will result in sunken eyes.

    Weight loss

Most people tend to lose weight in their face first. Sometimes, the weight loss is sudden enough to make blood vessels below the eyes easy to see, and the skin clear, producing the appearance of sunken eyes. Sudden weight loss may also cause nutritional shortages, which can lead to sunken eyes.

Not enough sleep or poor-quality sleep can cause sunken eyes and a person’s DNA or the habit of smoking can also contribute to sunken eyes. Most cases of sunken eyes relate to the quality of an individual’s nutrition and healthy living. When these causes are corrected, sunken eyes can be resolved without further treatment. This means that causes can be avoided or treated in good time to prevent the recurrence of sunken eyes.

【1】What can we do to prevent dehydration according to the text?

    A.Have certain drinks less.

    B.Refuse coffee.

    C.Drink more water.

    D.Say no to soft drinks.

【2】What will lead to bruising below the eyes?

    A.Lack of vitamin K.

    B.Water shortages.

    C.Lack of vitamin C.

    D.Nutritional shortages.

【3】Which of the following should be avoided for people losing weight?

    A.Pale faces.

    B.Sudden weight loss.

    C.Clean skin.

    D.Narrow blood vessels.
