27、William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. His childhood lacked the harmony that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama and poetry.
Yeats had strong faith in coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn’t lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.
Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats’s poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.
He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Price in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would who probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet Auden wrote, among others, the following liners:

Emptied of its poetry.

28、 In 1945, there was a young boy of 14 in a concentration camp (集中营). He was tall, thin but had a bright smile. Every day, a young girl came by on the other side of the fence. She noticed the boy and asked him if he spoke Polish, and he said yes. She said he’d looked hungry, and he said he was. She then reached in her pocket and gave him her apple. He thanked her and she went on her way. The next day, she came by again, bringing with her another apple which she gave him. Each day, she walked by the outside of the fence, hoping to see him, and when she did, she happily handed him an apple in exchange for conversation.
One day, he told her not to come by anymore. He told her he was being shipped to another concentration camp. As he walked away with tears streaming down his face, he wondered if he’d ever see her again. She was the only kind soul he’d seen acro ss the fence.
He made it out of the concentration camp, and immigrated to America. In 1957, his friends had fixed him up on a blind date . He had no idea who the woman was. He picked her up, and during dinner began talking of Poland and the concentration camp. She said she was in Poland at that tim e. She said she used to talk to a boy and gave him apples daily. He asked if this boy was tall, skinny and if he had told her that she shouldn’t come back because he was leaving. She said yes.
It was her, the young girl who came by every day to give him apples. After 12 years, after the war and in another country, they had met again. What are the odds? He proposed to her on that very night and told her he’d never again let her go. They are still happily married today.

29、 Is there a “success personality”—some winning combination of qualities that leads almost essentially to achievement? If so, exactly what is that secret success formula (公式), and can anyone develop it?
At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success, digging into the attitudes of 1500 brilliant people selected at random (随机) from Who’s Who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of the most important, that is, common sense.
Common sense is the most popular quality shared by the top achievers. Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this quality. And 61 percent say that common sense was very important in contributing to their success.
To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To do this, one has to sweep aside extra ideas and get right to the heart of what matters. A Texas oil and gas businessman puts it this way: “The key ability for success is simplifying. In conduction of meeting and dealing with industry, reducing a complex problem to the simplest term is highly important.”
Is common sense a quality a person is born with, or can you do something to increase it? The oil man’s answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. He attributes (归咎) his to learning how to debate in school. Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their and your own mistakes.
Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success: knowing your field, self-reliance, intelligence, the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of course, luck. But common sense stands out. If you develop these qualities, you’ll succeed. And you might even find yourself listed in Who’s Who someday.
【1】Roughly how many people in the survey listed common sense as the most important quality?
A.80. B.60. C.1200. D.900.
【2】In paragraph 4, the example of the oil and gas businessman is used to prove_______.
A.common sense can be judged B.common sense means simplifying

【3】What do we know about common sense?
A.It’s rooted in common people. B.It is a side effect of mistakes.
C.It is taught by our parents. D.It can be trained by ourselves.
【4】What is the best title of the passage?
A.Common Sense B.The Success Personality
C.Personal Qualities D.A Popular Formula

31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 【1】. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 【2】 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.
Is there really much truth behind this science of 【3】 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 【4】 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.
Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.
Each micro-expression is unique to 【5】 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.
A liar refuses eye contact.
People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 【6】 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 【7】of sadness and few people can make this 【8】 expression, so it is actually never faked.
Guilty knowledge technique is 【9】.
Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)【10】. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.
