  • 22、   The cracked (有裂缝的) step four years ago was the start of it. That day, I awoke tired—the children were tiny and needing so much—and I had a golden afternoon of rest ahead, my mother stepping in to allow me to catch up on my sleep. I dropped them off and drove home—the sun shining and my bed signaling. As I was about to enter the house, I caught sight of a deep crack beneath my feet.

Without thinking, I turned around, walked back to the car and drove to a DIY store. Four hours later, I had all the tools, had mixed my own cement (水泥), filled in the crack and repaired the foundation. Perfect. As I stood up to take a photo of my handiwork, I realized that I was trembling. I’d forgotten my shot at a nice long nap, and my children were already on their way home. That sleep... that promise to self was broken, because I had focused, instead, on the crack in the step.

Suddenly, everything started to hurt. My head, my throat, my back. I couldn’t stop shaking. What earned then is that when we break the promises we make to our bodies they will not be silenced. This is when we overwork and overthink to the point of breaking down. Ironically (讽刺地), for many of us, it is only when we have no choice— when we fall ill—that we learn to listen. For me, when that crack ended in a hospital stay which sent me to bed for two unmoving weeks while my body worked to clear two different infections, the lesson is ever present. I did it to myself—a whole twisted spin on DIY.

Sadly it took another two ridiculous DIY projects to finally get through. The cracks will never be fully filled. Focus, then, on your own inner core the feeding of that light, that fire and that strength.

1What made the author so sleepy in the first place?

A.Taking care of the kids. B.Visiting her mother.

C.Doing the housework. D.Dealing with DIY projects.

2How did the author feel as soon as she finished her repair work?

    A.Regretful. B.Upset.

    C.Proud. D.Thankful.

3What can be implied from Paragraph 3?

    A.Our health is ignored deliberately.

B.Our body will respond to what we do.

C.The author took her mother’s advice.

D.The author stayed in hospital for two weeks.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To present a way to fill a crack.

B.To show the danger of DIY.

C.To stress the importance of sleep.

    D.To encourage focusing on oneself.

  • 23、What do you get when you mix six little pigs, four monkeys and the deadly Ebola virus? Bad news, according to a recent experiment by Canadian researchers.

The experiment is the first to suggest that the Ebola virus can spread through the air. The study, published in November, detailed how the virus apparently moved from pigs to monkeys without their coming into physical contact. Previously, researchers thought animals had to touch to pass along the virus, which has been blamed for the deaths of more than 1,500 people.

In the experiment, researchers infected six piglets with Ebola. The team then placed the infected piglets in a room with several monkeys. A barrier separated the monkeys from the pigs, so the two species could not touch. And yet, after about a week, two monkeys became sick, infected with the virus. A few days later, the other two monkeys also fell sick with Ebola.

The Ebola virus is named for a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa, close to where the germ was discovered. The virus causes high fevers and deadly bleeding disorders in primates, including people and monkeys. It is often deadly. However, scientists previously believed that the virus spread only through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person or animal. Other viruses, including the ones that cause chicken pox and the common cold, are known to spread through the air.

Though Ebola too appeared to spread through the air in the laboratory experiment, researchers haven’t documented any cases of airborne infection under normal conditions. Since the discovery of Ebola in 1976, it has infected more than 2,200 people. Of that total, only 13 people fell ill apparently without coming into direct contact with an infected animal or person. If Ebola spreads easily through the air, scientists and doctors would expect to see more such cases.

1What does the underlined part “Bad news” in Paragraph1 refer to?

    A. The animals will only spread the virus to other animals.

    B. Canadian researchers have not reached a conclusion.

    C. The virus will be spread among people by pigs and monkeys.

    D. The pigs and monkeys will get infected with the virus.

2What have researchers surprisingly found about the Ebola virus recently?

    A. The Ebola virus can be deadly to animals in the wild.

    B. The Ebola virus can spread without direct physical contact.

    C. The Ebola virus can kill humans after they get infected with it.

    D. Animals have to touch each other to pass along the Ebola virus.

3What do we know about the Ebola virus?

    a. It was first found in an African country.

    b. It spreads totally differently from chicken pox.

    c. It cannot spread through other body fluids besides blood.

    d. People usually suffer from high fevers after getting infected.

    e. It spread only through direct contact with the blood in the past.

    A. abe   B. ad   C. abc   D. bcde

4It is implied about the Ebola virus in the last paragraph that ___.

    A. it has killed thirteen people in total through air spreading

    B. it cannot cause any human infections under normal conditions

    C. spreading through the air is not an efficient route of transmission

    D. more than 2,200 people have died because of the infection of the virus

  • 24、Few writers have had such an impact on the thinking of the modem world as British writer George Orwell(1903—1950).Orwell wrote many things on a variety of topics, for example, poverty in England in the 1930s during the Great Depression and his experience in the Spanish Civil War(1936—1939).

But he is most famous for his works of fiction,Animal Farm(1945)and,especially,Nineteen Eighty-Four(1949).These last books became especially influential in the West in the 1950s during the early Cold War years.

In Nineteen Eighty-Four,Orwell imagined a Britain of the future, modeled on the Soviet union(苏联).His frightening tale of Winston Smith,a regular man who comes into conflict with the government, was close to the fears of many people of the time.Ideas from the novel soon entered everyday culture, and are still in use today.“Big Brother”,for example,is a phrase from the book that refers to how authority is always looking over one’s shoulder. Other phrases used in the novel,1ike“War is Peace”and “Freedom is slavery”are also still used now.Indeed, many people see Orwell’s book as a warning about what might happen if those in power become corrupted.

Even today,Orwell remains an influential voice. Often, writers achieve great fame and popularity, but they don’t affect how people live their everyday lives.UNESCO’S Memory of the World Programme recently decided to include a collection of Orwell’s writings on its register.

The Memory of the World register is similar to UNESCO’s world heritage site program, which protects places and buildings natural features in the world.According to its website, the idea behind the body is“that the world’s documentary evidence belongs to all”and should be “accessible forever to all”.

University College London, which proposed the idea to UNESCO,said in its application that Orwell’s work“had a great influence on human thought in all parts of the world,an influence that remain powerful today”.

1What do we know about Orwell?

    A. He only wrote about imaginary worlds.

    B. He liked to follow the style of other writers.

    C. His works were based on his own experience.

    D. His books were well-received during the Cold War.

2Orwell wrote the novel Nineteen eight-Four to_______.

    A. warn people of the dangers of corruption

    B. present various conflicts with the government

    C. expose the cruelty of the war in the 20th century

    D. describe the serious effects of poverty in England

3The passage mentioned some phrases from Orwell’s books mainly to__________.

    A. stress his ideas are still popular today

    B. share some of his ideas with leaders

    C. show how he used language in a creative way

    D. explain how he described the dark side of society

4Why would the Memory of the Word register include Orwell’s writings?

    A. They are a huge literary success.

    B. They introduced a new way of writing.

    C. They shaped political systems in Western countries.

    D. They continue to have a great effect on human thought.
