二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

If you see a group of people dancing and singing on the street or in the railway station, you don't need to feel surprised. They are a flash mob(暴民). Who are they? Are they mobs? Don't be confused by their name. Actually, a flash mob is a group of people who gather suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a brief period of time, and then quickly disappear.

They are usually organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks. The messages may be sent to friends, who send to more people. At a predetermined time, they gather and perform some activities such as exchanging books, coming together to look at the sky, waving their hands and yelling something at the top of their voice for 30 seconds. Then, they quickly disappear before the police can arrive. Using mobile phones, the flash mob can change its place if the first one has been cancelled for any reason.

Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper's Magazine, organized the first flash mob in Manhattan in May 2003 and the first successful flash mob gathered on June 3, 2003. Wasik claimed that he created the flash mob as a social experiment designed to laugh at fashion seekers and stress the cultural atmosphere of wanting to be an insider or part of “the next big thing”.

Flash mob gatherings can sometimes shock people. Such an activity might seem amusing and magical, but it also might frighten people who are not aware of what is taking place. Undoubtedly, flash mob can serve as good political tools and have great potential, such as using flash mob to advertise a product.

The flash mob is now becoming more and more popular. People use it to do many things. For example, in 2009, Michael Jackson’s fans took part in a flash mob to remember him. Hundreds of his fans gathered singing and dancing Michael’s famous song “Beat It” together. Flash mobs give people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together to create a memory.

【1】What is NOT the feature of the flash mob?

    A. It can get together quickly.

    B. It can change its place freely.

    C. It can do activities suddenly.

    D. It can injure people seriously.

【2】How do flash mobs inform one another?

    ①By using the Internet.

    ②By writing letters.

    ③By yelling.

    ④By waving hands.

    ⑤By using mobile phones.

    ⑥By holding a meeting.

    A. ③④     B. ①⑤     C. ②⑥  D. ⑤⑥

【3】Why did Bill Wasik create the flash mob?

    A. To advertise some products.

    B. To help people make friends.

    C. To laugh at fashion seekers.

    D. To create some memories.

【4】What can we learn about the flash mob from the passage?

    A. Bill Wasik organized the first successful flash mob in May, 2003.

    B. People are encouraged to take a more active part in an activity.

    C. Flash mobs tend to do something illegal for a short time.

    D. Flash mob gathering can frighten all the people present.

  • 22、Gremlins

“It’s festival fun with a mean feature — you’re bound to appreciate even the worst of holiday gifts just a bit more after viewing because, hey, at least that lame (锦缎) pair of socks can’t change into a blood-thirsty elf that bites you from the Christmas tree, right? Right.” —Damon Beres, assistant editor.

    The Ref

“Denis Leary stars as a burglar who takes a quarreling couple—Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis — hostage (人质) in their home on Christmas Eve. The twist is, the couple ends up driving him crazy.”— Andy Simmons, humor editor.

    Elf

“It’s both an original and funny fish-out-of-water comedy and a typical underdog film — we all want enthusiasm, love of family and friends, and believe in Christmas magic to overcome busy schedules and cynicism (愤世嫉俗).”—Sarah Wharton, copy editor.

    Santa Claus: The Movie

“I used to be obsessed with this holiday movie that features John Lithgow as an evil toy maker and an emotional elf named Patch. After remembering flashes of random scenes and not recalling the movie title, I hopped online to Google a variation of ‘homeless boy falls in love with rich girl on Christmas’ and ‘scary-looking John Lithgow yells at weeping elf’ and luckily dug up the name. If this recommendation hasn’t already got you on Hulu, then I give up.”—Alison Caporimo, associate editor.

A.To introduce the plot of the four movies.

B.To advise readers to see the four movies.

C.To present the characters of the four movies.

D.To inform people of the way to spend festivals.

  • 23、In the idealized version of how science is done, facts about the world are waiting to be observed and collected by objective researchers who use the scientific method to carry out their work. But in the everyday practice of science, discovery frequently follows an ambiguous (模糊不清的) and complicated route. We aim to be objective, but we cannot escape the context of our unique life experience. Prior knowledge and interest influence what we experience, what we think our experiences mean, and the subsequent actions we take. Opportunities for misinterpretation, error, and self-deception are plentiful.

Consequently, discovery claims should be thought of as proto-science (原始科学). Similar to new mining claims, they are full of potential. But it takes collective examination and acceptance to transform a discovery claim into a mature discovery. This is the credibility process, through which the individual researcher's me, here, now becomes the community's anyone, anywhere, anytime. Objective knowledge is the goal, not the starting point.

Once a discovery claim becomes public, the discoverer receives intellectual credit. But, unlike with mining claims, the community takes control of what happens next. Within the complex social structure of the scientific community, researchers make discoveries; editors and reviewers act as gatekeepers by controlling the publication process; other scientists use the new finding to suit their own purposes; and finally, the public (including other scientists) receives the new discovery and possibly accompanying technology. As a discovery claim works it through the community, the interaction and confrontation between shared and competing beliefs about the science and the technology involved transforms an individual's discovery claim into the community's credible discovery.

Two paradoxes exist throughout this credibility process. First, scientific work tends to focus on some aspect of common knowledge that is viewed as incomplete or incorrect. Little reward accompanies the copying and confirmation of what is already known and believed. The goal is new-search not re-search. Not surprisingly, newly published discovery claims and credible discoveries that appear to be important and convincing will always be open to challenge and potential modification or refutation (驳斥) by future researchers. Second, novelty itself frequently provokes disbelief. Nobel Laureate and physiologist Albert Szent-Gyorgyi once described discovery as “seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought”. But thinking what nobody else has thought and telling others what they have missed may not change their views. Sometimes years are required for truly novel discovery claims to be accepted and appreciated.

In the end, credibility “happens” to a discovery claim — a process that corresponds to what philosopher Annette Baier has described as the commons of the mind. “We reason together, challenge, revise, and complete each other's reasoning and each other's conceptions of reasons.”

【1】It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that credibility process requires ________.

    A.strict inspection

    B.shared efforts

    C.individual wisdom

    D.persistent innovation

【2】Paragraph 3 shows that a discovery claim becomes credible after it ________.

A.has attracted the attention of the general public

B.has been frequently quoted by peer scientists

C.has received recognition from editors and reviewers

D.has been examined by the scientific community

【3】Albert Szent-Gyorgyi would most likely agree that ________.

    A.scientific claims will survive challenges

B.scientific work calls for a critical mind

C.efforts to make discoveries are justified

    D.discoveries today inspire future research

【4】Which of the following would be the best title of the text?

A.Novelty as an Engine of Scientific Development.

    B.Collective Examination in Scientific Discovery.

C.Evolution of Credibility in Doing Science.

D.Challenge to Credibility at the Gate to Science.

  • 24、Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbours, even pets, will all do the trick, but the biggest longevity(长寿)boost seems to come from marriage or an equivalent relationship. The effect was first noted in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers(鳏夫)were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man’s life and two to a woman’s. The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm.

Even if the odds are stacked against you(the conditions are not favourable),marriage can more than compensate. Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Likewise, a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn’t smoke. There’s a flip side, however, as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouses; death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the  same severe problems. Even so, the odds favour marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects.

So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socio-economic factors, health-service provision, emotional support and other more physiological mechanisms(机制).For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.

A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100.The best social network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says:” People are interconnected, so their health is interconnected.”

1William Farr’s study and other studies show that________.

A.social life provides an effective cure for illness

B.Being sociable helps improve one’s quality of life

C.Women benefit more than men from marriage

D.Marriage contributes a great deal to longevity

2Linda Waite’s studies support the idea that________.

A.older men should quit smoking to stay healthy

B.Marriage can help make up for ill health

C.The married are happier than the unmarried

D.Unmarried people are likely to suffer in later life

3It can be inferred from the context that the “flip side”(Line5,Para2)refers to________.

    A.the disadvantages of being married

B.The emotional problems arising from marriage

C.The responsibility of taking care of one’s family

D.The consequence of a broken marriage

4What does the author say about social networks?

A.They have effects similar to those of a marriage.

B.They help develop people’s community spirit.

C.They provide timely support for those in need.

D.They help relieve people of their life’s burden

5What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.It’s important that we develop a social network when young.

B.To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.

C.Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.

D.We should share our social networks with each other.
