二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、While the human world is suffering from the novel coronavirus outbreak, our planet is actually showing certain signs of “recovery” from the damage caused by human activity. According to the BBC, new satellite images released by the European Space Agency showed that levels of air pollutants and greenhouse gases have “fallen sharply” in major cities in Europe and the United States ever since the lockdown started.

This is a great example of how the world can change overnight as soon as people change their behavior—especially after recent discoveries in Antarctica.

An international team of 89 scientists found that the ice in Greenland and Antarctica is melting six times faster in the 2010s than it was in the 1990s. And in February, Argentina’s Marambio research station in Antarctica recorded a record high temperature of 20.75 ℃ on the continent.

So what exactly will happen if the temperature keeps rising and the ice keeps melting? A third study might give you an idea. A team of scientists drilled a hole into the seafloor in west Antarctica and extracted material from underground, in which they found traces of roots, spores and pollen—typical products of a rainforest—that dated back 90 million years ago. In other words, Antarctica was very likely a rainforest back when the dinosaurs walked on Earth.

But given the fact that the South Pole has four months of darkness winter—even millions of years ago—scientists believe that the rainforest could only exist if the greenhouse gas concentrations were extremely high back then to keep the continent warm when there was little or no sunlight. “We didn’t know that this Cretaceous(白垩纪的)greenhouse climate was that extreme,” Johann Klages of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany and a co-author of the research told the Guardian. “It shows us what carbon dioxide is able to do.”

Ice or no ice, Antarctica will be—and has always been—fine with extreme changes. The human world, however, may not be.

Now, during the coronavirus lockdown, we’ve seen the changes resulting from less human activity. Hopefully, we’ll hold on to those changes—not for Antarctica or the planet, but for ourselves.

【1】What message does the author mainly want to convey in the first paragraph?

A.The air pollution issue in major cities urgently needs to be dealt with.

B.The novel coronavirus outbreak has resulted in a damage to nature.

C.Reduced human activity is beneficial to the healing process of the earth.

D.The novel coronavirus outbreak has changed the patterns of human activity.

【2】What can we learn from the recent discoveries in Antarctica?

A.The climate in Antarctica can change overnight.

B.The greenhouse effect in Antarctica is extremely severe.

C.The high temperature in Antarctica is caused by climate change.

D.The glacier in Antarctica is melting in a faster speed in this century.

【3】Why was Antarctica likely to be a rainforest 90 million years ago?

A.Traces of typical elements in a rainforest were found underground.

B.The greenhouse gas concentrations were extremely high back then.

C.The density of carbon dioxide has changed the climate in Antarctica.

D.The temperature in Antarctica have been increasing since the Cretaceous time.

【4】According to the passage, which of the following statements is True?

A.Human activities do little harm to Antarctica.

B.We should limit carbon dioxide emissions to save ourselves.

C.There is little we can do to recover the environment in Antarctica.

D.Limiting human activities can be used to slow down global warming.

  • 22、In the US, there is an old joke: “Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back and he’ll be speechless.” However, Susan Goldin-Meadowin, author of the book Thinking With Your Hands, has a rather different view.

“Almost everyone gestures, not just Italians,” she laughs. “Conference interpreters gesture in their little rooms, though no one is looking at them. Even people born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. In the TV series, The Crown, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may reveal her real emotions, which could be dangerous and that they have to be tied together so she can learn to speak without gesturing.”

The gesture under discussion is the so-called “co-speech gesture”. It is much more abstract than such symbolic gestures like a finger over the lips for “Silence!” or raising a finger to mean “Great!”. Like words, such symbolic gestures are fixed within cultures (but vary between them). Instead, co-speech gestures that accompany speech are another channel of information and emotion. For example, subjects are asked to watch a film in which a cat runs, but they are told to lie and say it jumped. They may do so in words—while their hands will make a running movement. The co-speech gesture is not sign languages, either. They have clearly defined words and grammar.

And the co-speech gestures have great potential for practical applications. For example, some students who fail at a tricky mathematics problem may gesture in a way that indicates they understand it. Then they should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they really understand it.

“Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at or around birth are likely to catch up verbally by the age of about 30 months, if they gesture as much as their peers (同龄人). Those who gesture less are more likely to need intensive early intervention,” Susan Goldin-Meadowin adds. “Co-speech gesturing is not just about a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is an aid to both.”

【1】What does Susan Goldin-Meadowin really want to tell us in paragraph 2?

A.Lady Diana is probably an emotional woman.

B.Italians are very talkative and gesture too much.

C.It is unnatural for the blind to gesture to each other.

D.Co-speech gestures are used by all of us unknowingly.

【2】What can we say about sign languages?

A.They are as abstract as co-speech gestures.

B.They have clearly defined words and grammar.

C.They are usually learned by human beings naturally.

D.They vary from culture to culture and person to person.

【3】What does the author suggest teachers do in the text?

    A.Put enough trust in students.

B.Encourage students to tell the truth.

    C.Observe the co-speech gestures carefully.

D.Teach the tricky problems in different ways.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Co-speech Gestures Are a Vital Part of Communication

B.Symbolic Gestures Differ Greatly From Co-speech Gestures

C.Co-speech Gestures Are More Difficult Than Sign Languages

D.Symbolic Gestures Have Great Potential for Practical Applications

Its hard to be the bearer of bad news, but most of IKEAs print and digital fascinating shots of picturesque rooms and products are fake. Those beautiful,natural-looking photos of gorgeous rooms and kitchens are mostly the work of computer magic, adjusted and corrected until theyre picture-perfect.

Martin Enthed,IT manager for IKEAs in-house communications agency, revealed,In 2012,12 per cent of its product and concept images was CGI-rendered,increasing to 25 per cent in 2013.Since then, that percentage of rendered images appearing in the companys catalogue and online has tripled.75 per cent of the furniture companys product images today are created by computers.

It’s a move that first caught the attention of photographers and graphic designers a few years back when the furniture giant announced it would cancel photoshoots in favor of computer-generated imagery(CGI).

Enthed said IKEA began shifting equipment in 2009 when company officials called in his team and said they werent pleased with some previous photos and CG images.

“So we looked at all the images they said weren’t good and the two of three they said were great, and the ones they didnt like were photography and the good ones were all CG,Enthed said. Now we only talk about a good or bad image - not what technique created it.

It’s a not-so-secret strategy used by top companies specializing in home and furniture design, though many consumers remain oblivious.

The company claims the shift is another way to reduce its environmental footprint, saying constructing digital files produces less waste. It also helps the home furnishing empires pocketbooks.

1What directly led IKEA to adopt CGI on a larger scale?

    A.The convenience of high technology.

    B.Company officials reaction to works.

C.The change in the concept of management

    D.Development of environmental awareness.

2According to the passage, the advantage of the shift is that IKEA can

    A.expand into another field

    B.increase its financial benefits

    C.win more support of consumers

D.produce more furniture of high quality

3The underlined word oblivious in paragraph 6 means

    A.unaware   B.calm

    C.conservative   D.disturbed

4It can be concluded from the passage that

A.IKEA should be punished because of fake photos

B.IKEA set a good example as the furniture giant

C.IKEA adjusted strategies to answer its need

D.IKEA has a pioneering spirit in promotion

  • 24、Transport has a lot to answer for when it comes to harming the planet. While cars and trains are moving towards greener, electric power, emissions from air travel are expected to increase massively by 2050. If we want big green sky solutions, we need blue sky thinking. Fortunately, there’s plenty of that happening right now, particularly the short-haul flights powered by batteries.

Harbour Air is the largest seaplane airline in North America, flying 30,000 commercial flights in 40 seaplanes each year. Significantly, all Harbour Air routes last less than 30 minutes, making it perfectly fit for electric engines. “As an airline, we’re currently in the process of turning all our planes into electric airplanes.” says CEO Greg. McDougall. To make this happen, the airline has partnered up with MagniX to create the world’s first commercial flight with an electric engine.

Making the skies electric isn’t just good for the environment, it also makes sound financial sense: a small aircraft uses $400 on conventional fuel for a 100-mile flight, while an electric one casts $8-12 for the same distance, and that’s before you factor in the higher maintenance costs of a traditional engine. There’s also the added bonus that electric planes are just much more pleasant to fly in. No loud engine noise, no smell of fuel, just environmentally friendly peace and quiet.

While there has been real progress in the e-plane industry, the technical challenges that remain are keeping everyone’s feet firmly on the ground A battery, even a lithium one, only provides 250 watt-hours per kilogram; compare this to liquid fuel, which has a specific energy of 11,890 watt-hours per kilogram. Carrying adequate batteries, however, would make the plane too heavy to get off the ground. In aircraft, where every bit of weight counts, this can’t just be ignored.

The transition from gas to electric in the automobile industry has been made easier by hybrid vehicles powered by both fuel and electricity. Many believe the same pattern could be followed in the air. Fuel consumption could be reduced as the electric component is switched on at key parts of the journey, especially on take-off and landing.

It’s certainly an exciting time for electric flying. With companies like Harbour Air taking the lead, battery-powered planes, especially on short-haul journeys, are set to become a reality in the next few years.

【1】According to paragraph l, what is happening in air transport?

A.New explorations of the sky are being launched.

B.Pollution caused by batteries is being controlled.

C.Efforts are being made to make air travel greener.

D.Pollution caused by short-haul flights is increasing massively.

【2】What might be the biggest challenge of electric flying?

A.To make e-planes take off successfully.

B.To find qualified technicians for e-plane industry.

C.To calculate the energy needed to power e-planes.

D.To balance power and weight of batteries in e-planes.

【3】What could be done during the transition from gas to electric in air flight?

    A.To expand the landing field.

    B.To use mixed-power technology.

    C.To increase battery consumption.

    D.To produce new electric components.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the prospect of electric flying?

    A.Uncertain.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Skeptical.

  • 26、Directions: Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your won words as far as possible.

Working overtime has been common for employees in China’s internet sector for many years, but debate about the practice heated up recently after a blacklist of technology companies that push their staff to follow a “996” schedule went viral online.

The blacklist is said to have been compiled by current and former employees of technology companies. As of Monday, 84 Chinese companies were on the blacklist, which claims employees are forced to follow a “996” schedule, under which work begins at 9 am and finishes at 9 pm, six days a week.

“ If it’s ‘work more, pay more’ model, I’d be a lot more willing to follow the ‘996’ schedule. But the truth is, not every company is run that way. That’s why many people complain,” a software developer working in a gaming company based in Hangzhou, East China’s Zhejiang Province, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

The online complaints and discussions also come amid young people’s changing attitudes toward life and work, and rising rights protection awareness. With improved living standards, more young people have adopted a “work hard, play hard” lifestyle, compared with the older generations’ “work to live” mind-set. While working hard, they are calling for more holidays, and believe holidays are their rights.

“Bus we don’t know who we should resort to when it comes to all these holidays and payment issues, so we resort to the internet,” the developer said.

“Sometimes when projects come along. I work seven days a week, I sometimes even sleep at the office,” the developer said. “I’m a game lover and I like my job, but I think I’m underpaid and my work is not appreciated.”

Industry analysts noted that the hours required by the “996” model exceed the limits established in China’s Labor Contract Law. The culture of overtime is connected to the characteristics embedded in Chinese people - who are hard -working, diligent, and desirous of success. They are even willing to sacrifice some of their personal lives to achieve career success. This might be quite different and hard to be understood in European countries.

Beyond China, most people in other East Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea also suffer from working overtime due to similar cultural elements. Working overtime has become a global phenomenon, and labor unions around the world should play an active role in seeking more ways to better protect workers’ rights amid an industrial upgrading.
