21、“Just think positively!”
“It could be worse.”
“You should look at the bright side!”
We’ve all heard (and maybe used) these phrases without much thought. But they could be contributing to a culture of toxic(有毒的) positivity. For those new to this term, it might sound like an oxymoron(矛盾修辞法). How can positivity be toxic? Isn’t it supposed to be helpful, or “positive”, as the name suggests? 【1】
“Toxic positivity is when somebody avoids all negative thoughts or feelings, pretending everything is going well when it is not,” explains Melissa Dowd, a therapist at PlushCare, a virtual health platform for primary care and mental health services.Whitney Goodman, the author of Toxic Positivity describes toxic positivity as the “endless pressure to be happy and positive, no matter what the circumstances are.” 【2】 It’s also something we can cause other people to experience.
Expressing toxic positivity to others may look like offering them a simple solution to a complicated problem that we know nothing about, or not allowing people around you to appropriately express negative emotions.
Toxic positivity causes us to suppress our emotions, which can make them worse. 【3】 “Although it can be helpful to look on the bright side when facing challenges,” Dowd says, “not coping with negative feelings in a healthy way in the moment can lead to those feelings resurfacing later in different areas of your life or as a form of anxiety.” 【4】 “If I feel like you’re going to dismiss me, I’m going to stop sharing how I’m feeling,” Goodman adds.
【5】 If you’re using toxic positivity against yourself, Goodman suggests remembering it’s OK if you’re upset about something. It’s valid if something annoys you. “Allow ourselves and other people to share when they’re going through a difficult time,” she says. Dowd adds that it’s essential that “we all learn to cope with and process our emotions in a healthy way as opposed to avoiding how we feel” as life’s stressors continue to rise. For example, instead of simply saying “Just think positively,” we’d better say “Sometimes bad things happen. How can I help?”
A.Are there ways to avoid toxic positivity?
B.Toxic positivity also disrupts connection.
C.It can harm people who are going through difficult times.
D.This can come up in different situations when we are dealing with pressure.
E.They become more intense and can cause long-lasting health concerns in the future.
F.Experts say constant forced positivity can lead to the opposite, and have a negative effect.
G.This is what we may bring on to ourselves by not allowing negative thoughts and feelings.
22、Austrian company Tec-Innovation recently unveiled smart shoes that use ultrasonic sensors (声波传感器) to help people suffering from blindness or vision impairment (损伤) to detect obstacles (障碍物) up to four metres away.
Known as InnoMake, the smart shoe aims to become an alternative to the decades-old walking stick that millions of people around the world depend on to get around as safely as possible. The currently available model relies on sensors to detect obstacles and warns the wearer via vibration (振动) and an audible alarm sounded on a Bluetooth-linked smart phone. That sounds impressive enough, but the company is already working on a much more advanced version that includes cameras and artificial intelligence to not only detect obstacles but also their nature.
“Not only is the warning that I am facing an obstacle relevant, but also the information about what kind of obstacle I am facing. Because it makes a big difference whether it’s a wall, a car or a staircase,” Markus Raffer, one of the founders of Tec-Innovation, told TechXplore. “Ultrasonic sensors on the toe of the shoe detect obstacles up to four metres away. The wearer is then warned by vibration and/or audio signals. This works very well and is already a great help to me personally.”
The current version of the InnoMake shoe is already available for purchase on the Tec-Innovation website, for 3,200 per pair. The advanced system is integrated in the front of the shoes, in a waterproof and dustproof case. It is powered by a heavy-duty battery that can last for up to one week, depending on use. The battery can be charged in just three hours, using a USB cable.
The next step for Tec-Innovation is to use the data collected by its system to create a kind of street view navigation map for visually impaired people. “As it currently stands, only the wearer benefits in each case from the data the shoe collects as he or she walks. It would be much more sustainable if this data could also be made available to other people as a navigation aid,” computer scientist Friedrich Fraundorfer explained.

23、So you’re looking to ski at one of the best? We’ve done the hard work for you.
Breckenridge
Breckenridge is an extremely popular ski destination. It’s undoubtedly an awesome mountain to ride, but it can also get discouragingly crowded. This is not surprising given all the things Breckenridge has going for it: affordable lodging (借宿), an abundance of slopes and North America’s highest lift. The town atmosphere is fun and relaxing, plus there are a ton of shopping, dining, and drinking options to choose from. With so much to offer, Breckenridge makes for a great ski resort that suits all budgets.
Aspen Snowmass
Aspen is the ultimate ski destination for the rich and has evolved into four separate ski areas: Aspen, Snowmass, Buttermilk, and Aspen Highlands. They’re all linked by a shuttle system, accessible with a single ticket, and gathered around one of the greatest ski towns in the world. Aspen is truly the king of apres-ski (滑雪后的社交娱乐) with endless dining and nightlife options! It’s also one of the few ski resorts in Colorado where you won’t be affected by altitude sickness. For all the appeal that brings celebrities here, Aspen does come at a price.
Jackson Hole
Jackson Hole is infamous for its extreme terrain (地形) and steeps with the most continuous vertical in the US. Although it has the reputation of an expert’s paradise, recent improvements have made intermediate terrain easier to access. On the other side, Jackson Hole is not ideal for first-timers and kids due to the lack of beginner terrain. Crowds can also be an issue. If you’re looking for ski-in/ski-out access, stay in Teton Village which has a handful of bars; if not, the town of Jacks.
【1】If you are a beginner with a tight budget, which skiing resort may you choose?
A.Buttermilk.
B.Breckenridge.
C.Jackson Hole.
D.Aspen Snowmass.
【2】What can we learn about Aspen Snowmass?
A.It is economical to ski there.
B.It offers limited social activities.
C.One ticket can be used in 4 ski areas.
D.Visitors will feel sick for its high altitude.
【3】What’s the same disadvantage of Breckenridge and Jackson Hole?
A.The price is expensive.
B.The traffic is not very convenient.
C.They are not friendly to beginners.
D.They are very crowded sometimes.
24、Mount Kenya dominates the landscape all around it. 【1】 At an altitude of around 2,000m, a combination of the quality of soil, temperature and availability of water have long suited the growth of tea.
I visited farms in Meru County, to the east of Mount Kenya. Here I met families where tea planting knowledge has been passed from generation to generation. Whole hillsides are a bright green here. 【2】 The smallholder farmers have plots of one to three acres, with tea growing alongside other crops. I saw beehives set high in trees, and kids chasing animals about; livestock such as cows and goats are kept close.
【3】 As temperatures cooled off into the afternoon, I watched farmers bringing their baskets of tea into a buying station. They spread their tea out in the shade, where it could be inspected for quality; only a central bud with two tips either side of it is picked. At this stage the freshly picked tea is so aromatic; with a rich, organic smell. 【4】 It gives a really bold, orange, bright cup of tea.
Black tea from this region is used in the blend for Yorkshire Tea, the company behind which has supported the planting of 1.5 million trees around tea estates in Kenya. 【5】 They improve soil quality, reduce water run-off and give a secondary income from crops like mangos. The tea-growing region near Meru National Park is rich in wildlife, and so trees planted close together are helping in another way: they discourage elephants from wandering into the tea gardens.
A.I tasted the black tea grown here.
B.The tea-picking season is usually short.
C.Even on a dull day, tea sends out this light.
D.Here the trees benefit farmers in several ways.
E.Within the mountain’s shadow are beautiful tea gardens.
F.The famous tea houses and coffee bars here attract many people.
G.It gets so hot at midday that most activity is restricted to early or late.
