24、 Reintroducing beaver(海狸) to Britain could help clean up rivers, prevent flooding 水灾 and minimise soil loss, said an expert .
The results from a test area in Devon showed muddy water was three times cleaner when it left from where the beavers were living .Richard Brazie,a professor at the University of Exeter said, . "when the beavers dam(筑坝) our streams they keep soil in the headwaters.then the soil wouldn't block up rivers downstream and pollute our drinking and bathing waters. If we bring beavers back it can help to solve Britain’s problem of soil loss and pollution of waterways.
Prof Brazier's claims were disputed by the National Farmers' Union (NFU), which warned that the reintroduction of beavers to Scotland had damaged fields and forests . Spokesman Mark Pope said:"The effect the beavers have had on farmland, riverbanks and flood defenses in Scotland are still unknown. We wait for the results of the Devon test . Prof Brazier, insisted the animals could even play a useful role in preventing flooding. He told BBC News:" The public is now paying people to build leaky有漏洞的 dams to keep storm waters in the uplands. But the beavers do it free when building their own homes."
However, Professor Jane Rickson, a soil specialist from Cranfield University, Bedfordshire, joined the NFU in sounding a note of warning. “ in some places in the UK people were worrying soil loss,” she said “Beavers may in fact reduce the river channel and remove plants, it might cause greater erosion(侵蚀) of bank and increase, rather than decrease in the risk of flooding “. And she said beaver dams should be "leaky" to avoid build-ups of huge amount of waters.

25、 Once there was a poor lady who lived on a hill near the sea. She lived a lonely life. She was so poor that she had to work hard every day.
But one night as she sat at the table, the lady said to herself, “Why can’t I do good to others?” At last, she came up with an idea.
She decided to keep a lighted lamp (灯) at the window for the sailors every night. She found that ships sometimes broke up on the rocks in the sea, since there was no lighthouse to warn them of the danger at night. Maybe her lamp would warn them when their ships came near the rocks on the coast.
The lady felt glad when the thought came through her mind. So she worked late and made money to buy the oil for the lamp and then she placed the lamp at the window each night. In this way she saved many lives.
She did this for five years without the hope of reward ( 报酬). However, good acts were often found out. The sailors whose lives had been saved began to send gifts to her. They sent her tea from China, cloth from India, silk from France and grapes from Spain. But the poor lady did not need these gifts to make her happy. She gave many of them to the poor and the sick.

Graphics are things like pictures, maps, charts and tables. They give information to readers, Very often, we can see different kinds of graphics in books, magazines and newspapers. Writers use graphics to get the readers’ attention and give them some particular(特别的) information. Graphics help to understand the given information in a text. and graphics put the information in a particular order so that it's easy to understand when we take a quick look.

27、Among various programs, TV talk shows have covered all space on daytime television. But no two shows are more opposite, while at the same time standing out above the rest, are the Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey shows.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of "rubbish talk". The topics on his show are as surprising as can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people's lives.
Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes the TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Topics are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.
Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a "final word". He makes a small speech about the general idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.
Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show's main audience are middle-class Americans. Most of the people have the time, money and ability to deal with life's tough problems.
Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are people around 20 years old whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex , money and drugs. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned throung the talk shows.

【3】Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?
A. A new type of robot. B. National hatred (憎恨).
C. Family income planning. D. Street accident.
【4】We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows _________________.
A. have become the only one of its kind B. shows the weakness in human nature
C. appear at different times of the day D. attract different people
