二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Tuna sashimi may be tasty but every bite comes with a high body count: the millions of sharks killed each year when they’re accidentally caught by industrial fishing vessels. Now a new technology has shown promising results in sharply reducing the killing of a top predator key to keeping ocean ecosystems healthy.

The cylindrical (圆柱形的) device, called SharkGuard, was developed by Eishtek Marine, a UK company in 2020. The SharkGuard capsule is attached to a baited fishing hook. It contains a battery-powered capacitor that generates a three-dimensional electric field, which can be sensed by sharks. The electrical pulse overstimulates the animal’s electroreceptors that it uses to locate prey, and shocks the shark away from the hook.

In July and August 2021, two vessels fishing for bluefin tuna off the south coast of France tested SharkGuard on hundreds of baited hooks. During the trials, “bycatch” of blue sharks per 1, 000 hooks fell by 91. 3%.

An estimated 100 million sharks are killed annually by commercial fisheries and shark populations have fallen 71% since 1970, according to scientists.

“I see this as being potentially a game-changer, said Rachel Graham, a marine scientist. “The use of these instruments will be very helpful for companies to be able to label their tuna or their other target species as being ‘shark safe’, like they do with dolphin-safe tuna.”

However, the current version of the device has its limitations and it is not yet commercially available. The battery must be changed after 65 hours, which would not be feasible for vessels that deploy thousands of hooks on fishing lines that can stretch for miles,

A solution, though, is under development. Fishtek has obtained funding from the government to create an induction (电磁感应) charging system that would be built into the bins that store longline hooks. When the hooks are reeled in, they would dock in a charging cup and be fully powered for the next deployment.

【1】What does the underlined part “a top predator” in the first paragraph refer to?

    A.Sharks.

    B.Tunas.

    C.Vessels.

    D.Hooks.

【2】What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

    A.What SharkGuard is.

    B.How SharkGuard works.

    C.Why SharkGuard is invented.

    D.What effects SharkGuard has.

【3】What is Rachel Graham’s attitude towards SharkGuard?

    A.Doubtful

    B.Uncaring.

    C.Disapproving.

    D.Favorable.

【4】What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A.The device will be tested soon.

B.The device has been widely used.

C.The device needs to be improved.

    D.The device doesn’t need charging.

  • 22、   French baby-milk maker Lactalis and health authorities have ordered a major international recall ( 召回) of several food products for babies. The Lactalis Group is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of dairy products. It said French health officials warned the company that 26 babies had been sickened with salmonella (沙门氏菌) since December 1,2017.

The French Ministry of the Economy ordered the suspension of marketing and export of several baby products made at a Lactalis factory in Craon, France. It said all the products were manufactured after February 15, 2017, the French health ministry’s website says the recall affects nine countries in four continents: Britain and Greece in Europe; Morocco and Sudan in Africa; Peru and Colombia in South America; and Pakistan, Bangladesh and China in Asia. The United States, a major market for Lactalis products, is not affected.

A company spokesman told the Associated Press Monday that the recall is “precautionary (预防的)” and involves “several million” products. Lactalis noted in a statement that the 26 cases of infection were linked to products with the brand names Picot SL, Pepti Junior 1 , Milumel Bio 1 and Picot Riz. The statement included an apology and provided financial support to the families whose children were sickened. The company said it had taken measures to clean the area of the factory where the bacteria spread.

Infection with salmonella can cause sickness. Signs of infection include abdominal ( ) pain , diarrhea ( 腹泻) and higher-than-normal body temperature. The sickness is more dangerous among some populations, including the very young.

The Lactalis Group is a privately-held company. Its headquarters is in western France. Lactalis has 75, 000 employees in 85 countries and earnings of about 17 billion euros a year. Its famous brands include President and Galbani cheeses, as well as Parmalat milk.

1Why are the dairy products of Lactalis ordered to be returned?

A.Because they may have been polluted by salmonella.

B.Because they have claimed the lives of some babies.

C.Because their marketing strategy has been adjusted.

D.Because they are being boycotted by consumers.

2What can we learn about infection with salmonella from the passage?

A.26 baby cases have been found by now.

B.The symptoms include a high body temperature.

C.The very young tend to suffer less.

D.Nine countries were infected, including America.

3What measures have been taken to address the issue?

    A.Recalling the products made before Feb.15, 2017.

B.Cleaning all the areas of the relevant factories.

C.Pausing the promotion of products in Australia.

D.Covering the medical expenses of the sick children.

4Where does the text probably come from?

    A.A book review.

    B.A research paper.

    C.A news report.

    D.A doctor’s diary.

  • 23、When Jennifer Williams, now 54, became an elementary school teacher and tutor in Danville, Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But early on, she realized that some kids had limited access to books. “It’s very obvious to teachers of young children which kids are read to versus kids who are not,” she said. “It’s obvious at the end of the first day of school.” To Williams, the solution was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, as part of an event called Engage Danville, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that.

“Anybody could do that,” she said. “I wanted to do something that’s going to stretch my faith, my work ethic, my everything.” So she decided to set a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number, but as Williams posted on Facebook: “Don’t complain in the bleachers if you aren’t willing to work hard out on the field.’’ So she got to work, first by roping in friends to donate books or money to buy books. Before long, as news of Williams’s project spread, strangers started leaving bundles of books on her front porch. As quickly as the books come in, Williams gives them to local schools— free of charge— and also supplies books to little free libraries around the city of 41,000 just over the North Carolina border. She also hosts a book club for inmates in the local jail. In the four years she’s been doing all this, the Book Lady, as Williams has come to be known, has given away more than 78,000 books— only 922,000 more to reach her goal! And she’s not slowing down. It’s too important for kids with few options. Reading can take you anywhere,” she told CNN. You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything.

【1】What did Williams think of her giving away the books?

A.It was her source of income.

    B.It was her duty.

    C.It was her part-time job.

D.It was her access to reading.

【2】What does the underlined word “bleachers” probably mean?

    A.Stands.

    B.Schools.

    C.Offices.

    D.Playgrounds.

【3】What is most people’s attitude towards Williams’s project?

    A.Negative.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Opposed.

    D.Supportive.

【4】What message does the author seem to convey in the text?

A.Williams will continue to donate books.

    B.Reading can’t help the kids.

    C.Reading is not powerful.

D.Williams disliked reading in her childhood.

  • 24、Amaranth(苋菜), an ancient plant, is drawing attention throughout the world and connecting indigenous people(土著人)to their history. Since the 1970s, Amaranth has become a billion-dollar food and makeup product. Health-conscious shoppers will find it in rising numbers of grocery stores in the US and Mexico, and, increasingly, in Europe and the Asia Pacific.

“This is a plant that could feed the world,” said Beata from a nonprofit organization. Amaranth is actually a grain, like buckwheat(荞麦). Its seed is a highly nutritious source of protein, vitamins and minerals. A single amaranth plant produces hundreds of seeds, and a small handful of seeds will turn into hundred-pound bags of harvest the next season. Growing amaranth has provided a degree of economic independence for indigenous farmers in Guatemala and the US. The 8000-year-old plant tolerates a wide variety of climate conditions. Native to Mesoamerica, it is also grown in China, India, south-east Asia, west Africa and the Caribbean.

It’s this toughness that allowed the plant to survive over the centuries, even when the Spanish arrived in the Americas in the 16th century and banned amaranth. Amaranth faced another near-extinction when state forces began targeting the Maya people, and burning their fields, during the civil war. To preserve their traditional foods, Mayan farmers poured seeds into glass jars to bury in their fields or hide under floorboards.

“What we want is for the whole world to produce their own food,” said Maria, a member of agricultural community Qachuu Aloom. “For the seeds, distance doesn’t exist. Borders don’t exist.” Most recently, Maria said that during the pandemic, people with their own gardens, especially in locked down communities, felt secure knowing they had control over their food supply, thanks to amaranth. Amaranth has completely changed the lives of families in our communities, not only economically, but spiritually, added Maria.

【1】What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?

    A.Amaranth is gaining growing popularity.

    A.Its tough root.

    B.Its unforgettable flavor.

    C.Its balanced nutrition.

    D.Its amazing adaptability.

【3】According to Maria, what can Amaranth bring people?

    A.Bodily health.

    B.Greater wealth.

    C.Spiritual security.

    D.Closer relationship.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.How to Fight Food Shortage

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia Koch began what was only her second year as a first grade teacher in a virtual classroom at Edgewood Elementary School in Muskegon Heights, Michigan. One September afternoon a few weeks into the school year, she received a call from Ann Phillips, who was having technical difficulties with her granddaughter's tools for online learning.

Julia immediately knew something was wrong with Ann. The two women had spoken numerous times before, but Julia had never heard the grandmother sound quite like this. Her words were so jumbled(混乱的)that Julia could barely understand her, though she was able to make out that Ann had fallen four times that day. Julia called her principal, Charlie Lovelady, who assured her that he would call and check on Ann himself.

Just like Julia, Charlie could barely understand Phillips. He suspected she might be having a stroke(中风)—he recognized the signs from when his own father had suffered one. Charlie was able to make out the word "kids" and immediately became concerned that Ann's two grand-children, aged six and eight, were probably home alone with her—she is their primary guardian—and scared. Charlie asked his office manager to send an ambulance to the grandmother's home. Then Charlie called Vandiebilt Mathews and Keytria But-Walker, two deans in the school district, to tell them what was going on. Both of them dropped everything and drove to the family's home.

    注意:

    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

When they pulled up less than ten minutes later, the emergency workers were treating Phillips.
