二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Despite more than a month of efforts to rescue Tenora, a young green sea turtle, pollution-related issues made it difficult to save her. Tenora was finally put to death to reduce her suffering.

Tenora was brought in by Rainbow Reef Dive Center staff and customers on October 3, 2020.The rescue team was led by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors)Instructor Josh Phillips who had made it his “personal mission” to help Tenora after seeing her with a softball-sized tumor (肿瘤) out on the reefs (暗礁). He connected with the Turtle Hospital, a nonprofit in the Florida Keys for permission and guidance about how to rescue her.

After over a month of searching and failed attempts, Phillips was finally able to rescue her on a rainy Saturday. Shelby Ferguson of the Turtle Hospital met the boat at the dock to bring Tenora in for evaluation and care. Ferguson explained that green see turtles are the species most easily affected by the virus that causes fibropapilloma (FP) tumors like the one Tenora had. Generally, she said, the more polluted the water, the more turtles present with FP tumors.

In Hawaii, nitrogen ( 氯) runoff from pineapple farms increases the disease incidence in green sea turtles near the islands, explained Bette Zirkelbach, manager at the Turtle Hospital. Scientists there first made the link between poor water quality and increased FP tumors in green sea turtles. The Turtle Hospital is building on this knowledge by leading an in-water scientific study on sea turtle health in the Florida Keys for the next three years, she added.

While external masses can be surgically removed, there is currently no treatment for internal FP tumors in sea turtles, so animals like Tenora are humanely put to death to reduce their suffering, Zirkelbach said.

Phillips reflected on Tenora’s loss, saying, “I think it is terrible to consider that this is mostly caused by humans.” He urged everyone, “Wake up. Do better. We’re all in this together, and if we don’t try to change how we live our lives, things aren’t going to get any better. This is our chance lo do something today for the next generation.”

【1】How did Phillip react while seeing Tenora for the first time?

    A.He almost ignored her condition.

B.He brought her to the Turtle Hospital.

C.He immediately knew she needed help.

D.He decided to start a nonprofit for the species.

【2】What does Ferguson’s explanation tell us about green sea turtles?

    A.They have already become endangered.

B.They are easily threatened by polluted water.

C.It is still unclear how they get FP tumors.

D.It is rare to see they have internal FP tumors.

【3】Why does the author mention Phillips’ words in the last paragraph?

A.To draw attention to green sea turtles.

B.To describe ways of protecting the earth.

C.To call for action to help the environment.

D.To educate the next generation in responsibility.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

A.A Diver Helps Save a Green Sea Turtle

B.Pollution Worldwide Is Putting Species in Danger

C.Rescue Green Sea Turtle Is Put to Death Due to Tumor

D.Researchers Are Looking for Ways to Rescue Green Sea Turtles

  • 22、This summer, Monika Lutz’s life took an unusual turn. Instead of heading off to college, the high school graduate packed her bags for a Bengali jungle. Lutz, like a growing number of other young Americans, is taking a year off. Gap(间隔) years  are quite common in Britain and Australia, but they are just beginning to catch on in the U.S. Lutz, who grew up in Boulder, Colo., has put together a 14-month schedule that includes helping deliver solar power to some communities in India and interning (实习) for a fashion designer in Shanghai---experiences that are worlds away from the lecture halls and university dormitories that await other students. “I could not be happier,” she says.

Why are students attracted to the gap-year concept? According to new survey data from Karl Haigler and Rae Nelson, education-policy experts and co-authors of The Gap-Year Advantage, the most common reason for this is to avoid burnout. “I felt like I was focused on college as a means to an end,” says Kelsi Morgan, an incoming Middlebury College freshman who spent last year interning for a judge in Tulsa, Okla., and teaching English at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. The hope is that after a year out of the classroom, students will enter college more energized, focused and mature. That can be an advantage for colleges too. Robert Clagett, dean of admissions at Middlebury, did some research a few years ago and found that a single gap semester was the strongest predictor of academic success at his school.

Most experts recommend securing a spot in college before taking a gap year and warn against using the time off to lengthen your resume. “Most admissions folks can see right through that,” says Jim Jump, the academic dean of St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Va. But for students like Lutz, who, after getting rejected from five Ivies, decided to take time off, a gap year can help focus interests. Lutz now plans to apply mostly to non-Ivies that have strong marketing programs. “This experience has really opened my eyes to the opportunities the world has to offer,” she says.

But at least one education expert doesn’t want schools spreading the gap-year message. In a study that followed 11,000 members of the high school class of 1992 for eight years after graduation, Stefanie DeLuca, a sociology professor at Johns Hopkins University, found that, all things being equal, those who delayed college by a year were 64% less likely to complete a bachelor’s degree than those who didn’t. DeLuca did not say whether these students voluntarily started college late, but at the very least, her work indicates that taking a gap year doesn’t guarantee success. “I’m not going to say that time off does not have benefits,” says DeLuca. “But I think we should not be so enthusiastic.”

【1】The students take gap years mainly because ______.

    A. they want to be more unusual

    B. they want to refresh themselves

    C. some experts advise them to do so

    D. their parents think it good for them

【2】According to Lutz, the gap year has made her more ______.

    A. energetic B. relaxed

    C. practical  D. enthusiastic

【3】Stefanie DeLuca probably agrees that ______.

    A. students should think twice before taking gap years

    B. taking gap years enables students to achieve success

    C. schools should encourage their students to take gap years

    D. taking gap years increases students’ chances of getting a good job

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards gap years?

    A. Sceptical.    B. Positive.

    C. Disapproving. D. Objective.

  • 23、What should we do when we are in a bad situation? Some may choose to give up. But is that what we should do? The following news report may get you encouraged.

With a population of 156 million, Bangladesh has one of the largest populations in the world. What makes the situation worse is that most of the country is situated on the low-lying Ganges delta(三角洲). As a result, it often suffers flooding, especially during the rainy season from July to October. In this period, the rivers rise as much as 12 feet. In such situations, people can only get to certain places by boat.

The problems are particularly serious in the Chalanbeel region, a poor area where people survive by farming on the rich delta soil when it is not underwater. But many parents there don’t want to send their children to school and there are not enough teachers. As a result, many kids living there do not attend school on a regular basis. The problem becomes worse during the rainy season when land schools cannot be reached. Many students never return to school after the forced breaks.

How to help students attend school regularly? 22-year-old Bangladeshi architect Mohammed Rezwan decided to take action. In 2002, the young man used $500 he had received in scholarships to start Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha. The non-profit organization’s mission was to set up floating schools. It took Rezwan four years to raise enough funds to open his first boat school. But as the world began to know about the organization’s worthy cause, money started to pour in. Until now, Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha has built 22 floating schools, some with playgrounds on the upper deck. Now a lot more children in the Chalanbeel region go to school regularly.

We should keep in mind that there is always a solution to every problem.

【1】Which of the following statements about Bangladesh is TRUE?

    A. It hardly suffers floods after October.

    B. There are not many rivers around the country.

    C. It is situated on the low-lying Ganges delta.

    D. It sees a lot of floods from July to October.

【2】It is implied in Paragraph 3 that in the Chalanbeel region, ________.

    A. children can’t receive a good education

    B. farmers don’t have rich soil to grow crops

    C. parents consider education very important

    D. teachers lose jobs as there aren’t enough students

【3】Knowing about the cause of Mohammed Rezwan’s organization, many people ________.

    A. realized education is very important

    B. decided to do what they could to help

    C. didn’t think his idea could be carried out

    D. were encouraged and tried to solve their problems

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I was 8 years old then. I had little need of luggage. But something about my grandma's old leather suitcase, which had been there beneath my bed, appealed to my imagination.

There was an elegance in the chestnut-brown leather of the suitcase. The cracked handle felt firm in my grip and made me feel like I was going to places. But I didn't use the old suitcase before that day.

It was a fall morning in our North Carolina town, and a fine mist dampened the fallen leaves. I was angry. My mother had slighted (冷落) me somehow, though now I have no idea what sparked my anger. I wanted to make her pay. I wanted to give her a taste of what life would be like without me. I decided to run away.

“Goodbye, Mom. ” I stood outside the kitchen door, suitcase firmly in hand. I was serious.

“Goodbye, Mom,” I repeated twice more, cracking open the swinging door with my foot the final time to make sure she'd heard. At last, Mom emerged, wiping her hands on a dish towel. I lifted the suitcase a little just to make sure she didn't miss it.

“I’m leaving home,” I said. I'd rehearsed for the expected reaction. The plan was to let her suffer guilt and beg for a minute or two, and then I would agree to stay.

“Did you pack a lunch?” Mom's question knocked me off balance. Where were the tears? The begging? The pleas? “I said I'm leaving,” I said. “I'm running away. For Ever!” I drew out the dreaded words, sure they would crack her down.

Instead, she smiled. “Well, would you like me to fix you something? A sandwich? A bag of chips? I just made chocolate chip cookies. ”

    “I'm really going,” I said.

    “I can see that.”

“Maybe a cookie.” I hesitated, “All right, I’m off. ” As I stepped onto the front walk, fresh-baked chocolate chip tucked in my coat pocket, I looked back at our big yellow house.

Surely, she would follow me. I stared at the front door, waiting for it to fling open. I watched the lace curtains in the living room window for movement. But, no! Not even a flicker of a curtain! My mother didn’t care if I ran away. Had she ever loved me at all?
