  • 26、For the first time, scientists have grown plants in the moon soil (土壤) collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts. The scientists had no idea if anything would grow in the moon soil. They wanted to see if it could be used to grow food by the next generation of moon explorers.

Robert Ferl of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences was surprised with the results. He and other researchers planted small flowering plants in the moon soil returned from the Apollo missions. The good news was that all of the plants grew. The bad news was that after the first week, the moon soil stressed the plants so much that they grew slowly. Most of the moon plants were small or not fully developed.

The longer the soil was exposed (暴露) to solar wind on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to do. The soil collected by the Apollo 11 mission was the least helpful for growth. It was exposed a couple billion years longer to the elements, the scientists said.

Simon Gilroy of the University of Wisconsin-Madison wasn’t part of the study. He said, “This is a big step forward to know that you can grow plants.” Gilroy added, “The real next step is to go and do it on the surface of the moon.”

Moon soil is full of glass particles (微粒). They got in the Apollo lunar landers and wore down the moonwalkers’ spacesuits. One solution might be to use younger spots on the moon for digging up soil. The environment also could be changed by adding special nutrient (养分) mixtures or man-made lighting.

【1】What happened to the plants after the first week?

    A.They grew better than before.

B.They died from lack of water.

C.They failed to grow very well.

    D.They were struck by diseases.

【2】What made the plants grow worse?

    A.Solar wind.

    B.Glass particles.

    C.Man-made lighting.

    D.Nutrient mixtures.

【3】According to the text, Simon Gilroy ________.

    A.thinks highly of the research

B.took part in the study himself

C.found a way to improve the soil

D.works at the University of Florida

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.NASA collected soil from the moon.

    B.Astronauts returned to Earth safely.

C.Scientists grew plants in the lunar soil.

D.Explorers grew food on the moon.

  • 27、   I first began experiencing anxiety and depression (抑郁) at the age of 14, after being bullied (欺凌) at school for years. While at first anxiety and depression would came and go, it eventually became a constant part of my life.

I was so eager to find the solution to overcoming my anxiety and depression that I tried everything from when I in college to graduate school: mood-changing medication (药物), special teas, yoga, anything I read about in books, and advice given by doctors. Despite this, I still felt I hadn’t even come close to managing the problem.

But one afternoon, my eyes fell upon an article in a magazine I was reading the talked about how dogs were able to help people with anxiety and depression. The very next day, I decide to get a dog—a corgi. When I brought my little corgi. Buddy, home, I didn’t realize how much he would change my life.

Once the “puppy excitement” went away, my anxiety and depression came back as usual. One morning, I woke up with those familiar feeling again. I didn’t want to get out of bed. I turned to pull the covers back over my head and gave up. That’s when I saw Buddy.

Buddy started jumping all over me, licking my face, letting me know that it was time to go outside. It was as if he were saying, “There’s no time to be sad, the world is amazing!” And for the first time in my life, my life was changing. I really was a new person. This was my new beginning.

It’s been more than a year since that day, and I’ve never spent another morning unable to get out of bed. I’ve not cried myself to sleep or spent my days stuck with fear and regret. Sure, I still have days when I feel sad or anxious. But with Buddy, my best friend, by my side, I’ve finally learned how to manage these feelings and emotions.

1Which cannot describe the author before she got a corgi?

    A. Anxious. B. Depressed. C. Hopeful. D. Fearful.

2How did the author know having a dog might help with her depression?

    A. She read about it by chance.

    B. She knew it from her doctors.

    C. She knew it after having a dog.

    D. She knew it from her friend.

3Which is closest in meaning to the underlined words “stuck with” in the last paragraph?

    A. please with B. unable to move

    C. unable to get ride of D. free of

4What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Dogs Are Our Best Friends

    B. Pet Dogs Can Be the Best Cure

    C. How to Overcome Depression

    D. Getting Rid of Depression Is a Piece of Cake

  • 28、   Dog training is a broad specialism, and the types of training vary just as much as the trainers themselves. 【1】 After all, this is the person who you will be relying on to get your dog under control. Dog training classes should be held at purpose-built facility(设施), though they can be held outdoors too.【2】 If the classes are held outside, then there should be fencing to protect the dogs from escaping or running into nearby traffic.

Not all dog training is basic obedience (服从), as the likes of agility training are popular too. This requires specialist equipment to allow your dog to jump, balance and run through tunnels.【3】

Unless you choose 1:1 training, there will be other dogs in the class. This can be good to owners as it gives you a chance to see how your pet is progressing compared with other dogs.【4】 The ideal class size for dog training is about 6 dogs.

In an ideal world, your dog would learn everything in just a handful of training sessions. Dog ownership is a duty lasting many years, and not all behaviors can be stopped in the bud just like that.【5】

To sum up, dog training classes give your dog the best chance at learning obedience. They are incredibly versatile and can learn various skills. The training then needs to continue at home and for the rest of the dog’s life in some form or another.

A.The location must be puppy proof and free from danger.

B.It helps you cope with your dogs better with dog trainers’ help.

C.It’s important to find a professional and experienced dog trainer.

D.Thus, choose the dog training classes with a complete set of equipment.

E.Be mindful though that your dog gets less individual attention in larger classes.

F.Rather, dog training needs to continue at home and be helped by the whole family.

G.So the facility should agree with the type of training you want to put your dog through.

  • 29、Grand Opening

    Bentwood Truck Museum

    Saturday, November 8, at 10:00 A. M.

After eighteen months of hard work by more than 100 volunteers, the Bentwood Truck Museum is ready to open. The old factory had been scheduled to be destroyed. When Roger Haygood heard about the plans to tear down the building, he bought it so that he could store his collection of old trucks there. Then he had the idea of turning the building into a truck museum.

During the past year and a half, the old building has been transformed into a treasure chest of memories. Instead of a dark and dull house, the building has become a cheery, bright home for all kinds of trucks from the past. The museum now houses 68 trucks, and we hope to have even more soon. There is a 1959 school bus, a 1942 bakery truck, and a 1937 fire engine. Our oldest vehicle is a 1919 milk truck. Our newest vehicle is a 1966 tow truck.

You can take a ride on a fire truck, a mail truck, or an ice-cream truck. Rides are $ 2.00, but you can get a ticket for a free ride at any grocery store in Bentwood.

Help us celebrate our grand opening by bringing your family and friends! There is something to interest everyone who attends. The Bentwood Truck Museum is a special piece of our history.
