  • 27、Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were two young men from Germany who loved a good story. As university students, they became interested in folktales—traditional stories that people memorized and told again and again. They began to collect traditional folktales from storytellers all over Germany. Many were similar to stories told in France, Italy, Japan, and other countries. Between 1812 and 1814, the brothers published two books in German. These included stories like "Hansel and Gretel" and "Little Red Riding Hood."

Despite the fact that Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are often associated with Snow White and Rapunzel, the brothers didn’t actually write any of those stories. In fact, the stories existed long before the two men were born in Germany in the mid 1780s. The fairy tales, in fact, were part of a rich oral tradition—passed down from generation to generation, often by women seeking to pass the time during household chores. In 1812, Jacob and Wilhelm published the stories as part of a collection titled Nursery and Household Tales, or what is now known as Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

The Grimm brothers’ tales were about traditional life and beliefs. For example, forests are common in Germany, and this image often appears in the Grimms’ stories. In the past, many people believed forests were dangerous places. In the Grimms’ stories, a forest is the home of evil witches, talking animals, and other magical beings.

Although most people today think of these stories as fairy tales for children, the brothers first wrote them for adults. Many of their early tales were dark and a little scary. Later, the brothers changed the text of some of the original stories. They "softened" many of the tales and added drawings. This made them more appropriate(合适的) for children. Like the early tales, though, each story still has a moral: work hard, be good, and listen to your parents.

Actually, university-trained philologists (语言学者) and librarians, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published more than fairy tales. They wrote books about mythology, and published scholarly works on linguistics and medieval studies.

【1】What is the main purpose of the reading?

A.To compare the Grimms’ stories to modern children's stores.

B.To explain why storytelling is important in Germany.

C.To examine two of the Grimms' fairy tales.

D.To give information about the Grimm brothers and their stories.

【2】Which of these statements is true about the Grimm brothers?

A.They invented the fairy tales in their books.

B.They wrote their books in different languages.

C.They became interested in folktales as students.

D.They traveled to many countries to collect stories.

【3】Which of the following best explains “moral” underlined in Paragraph 4 ?

    A.interest

    B.text

    C.story

    D.message

【4】What do we know about the Grimms' stories?

A.The later stories had morals, like the early ones.

B.The early stories were written for children.

C.The early stories had a lot of drawings.

D.The later stories reflected German life, but the early ones didn't.

  • 28、“Nomophobia”, NO Mobile Phone phobia(恐惧) is a 21st-century term for the fear of not being able to use your smartphone. Smartphone addiction is on the rise, surveys show, and a new study released adds to a growing body of evidence that smartphone addiction is harming our minds literally.

Smartphone addiction affects many people from all across the globe. Over 1.8 billion people own smartphones and the average owners check their screens 150 times a day. Considering those numbers, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when 44% of people (compared with 20% in 2011) admit feeling anxious when they can’t have access to their phones.

Researchers from Harvard University used brain imaging to study the brains of 19 teenage boys who were diagnosed with smartphone addiction. Compared with 19 teenagers who were not addicted, the brains of the addicted boys had significantly higher levels of GABA, which decelerates neurons (神经元), than levels of glutamate-glutamine, which energizes brain signals. That results in poorer attention and control, which you don’t want to have, because you want to stay focused. So that means you are easier to get distracted.

“Addicted teenagers in the study also had significantly higher scores in anxiety, depression and levels of impulsiveness (冲动) ,” said Dr. Leslie Perlow, who led the study.

If you seem to have the symptoms of smart device addiction, experts have some suggestions in addition to mindfulness training. First, turn off your phone at certain times of the day, such as in meetings, when having dinner, playing with your kids, and of course, driving. Remove social media apps, like Facebook and Twitter from your phone, and only check-in from your laptop. Try to stop yourself to 15-minute intervals at set times of the day when it won’t affect work or family life. Don’t bring your cellphone and its harmful blue light to bed, and use an old-fashioned alarm to wake you. And last, try to replace your smart device time with healthier activities such as meditating or actually interacting with real people.

【1】What is the conclusion of the research?

    A.Smartphone addiction leads to distraction.

    B.Smartphone addiction easily causes anger.

C.Smartphone addiction is harmful to the mind.

D.Smartphone addiction brings about anxiety and depression.

【2】Where can you find the data that best supports smartphone addiction is on the rise?

    A.In Paragraph 2.

    B.In Paragraph 3.

    C.In Paragraph 4.

    D.In Paragraph 5.

【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “decelerates” in Paragraph 3?

    A.Speeds up.

    B.Slows down.

    C.Adds to.

    D.Cuts down.

【4】Which of the suggestions is encouraged according to the text?

    A.To use an old-fashion cellphone.

B.To participate in more social activities.

    C.To stop fifteen-minute intervals.

D.To turn off the blue light on bed.

  • 29、I grew up in California but have spent about four years living in various parts of the UK. The first thing I noticed was that my West-Midlands host family did not sound like the queen. I’ve since learnt that accents change almost every five miles. As far as America goes. I can tell the West Coast from the East or the South, but I can’t tell you a state, much less a county (郡).

The next thing I couldn’t imagine was the quiet, stare-ahead norm of public transportation- if you talk to somebody on the Tube, you’re probably a serial killer or a lost tourist.

I’ve had to deal with the Tube from Heathrow to Victoria with heavy bags more times and Victoria Station is not exactly tourist friendly. Each time I’ve had someone walk up and ask to help with my bags. Not once have they been English. In America, at least from what I’ve experienced, people will start a chat if they see you’re travelling by yourself, and I always immediately have someone taller offer to put my things in an overhead bin (行李箱).

Opening hours-especially Sunday trading laws have also taken so much to get used to. In America, 24/7 fast food, grocery stores. petrol stations, etc. are the norm. In my first year in the UK,I forgot it was Easter Sunday, and went into town at 2:00 pm. Imagine my surprise when 1 found the city center was deserted, and there wasn’t a single car at Tesco. Approaching the building, I saw a large sign announcing opening times. I had to make do with plain bread until 9:00 am Monday, when I’d be able to pay for groceries again.

Speaking of groceries, it took so many people telling me I was crazy to convince me to eat eggs here- they’re not refrigerated, and they’ll often have bits of feather or chicken waste on the outside. 1 am now aware that they ‘re safe, but coming from a childhood of perfectly clean, white, large AAA eggs, I was convinced I’d die a terrible salmonella (沙门氏菌) death.

【1】What’s the author’s impression of the transportation of the UK?

A.It’s very dangerous to use public transportations.

B.It’s easy for a tourist 10 get lost on public transportations.

C.British people willingly offer help on public transportations.

D.British people don’t talk to each other on public transportations.

【2】What happened on Easter Sunday in the author’s first year in the UK?

    A.He left the city center.

B.He failed to buy any food.

    C.A supermarket closed down.

D.A restaurant opened in a tall building.

【3】What is a good suggestion to a foreigner in the UK?

A.Try to speak like the queen.

    B.Avoid eating unhealthy eggs.

C.Store some plain bread in the fridge.

D.Pay attention to the opening hours of the shops.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

A.How to Get Used to Life in the UK

B.What do I Find Strange about the UK

C.How Difficult It Is to Travel in the UK

D.What Can a Foreigner Expect in the UK
