  • 26、   The sharing economy has grown in recent years to include everything from apartment sharing to car sharing to community tool sharing. Since 2009, a new form of sharing economy has been emerging in neighborhoods throughout the US and around the world-Little Free Libraries. The libraries are boxes placed in neighborhoods where residents can take out and leave books. Little Free Libraries come in all shapes and sizes. Some libraries also have themes, focusing on books for children, adults, or tour guides.

In 2009, Tod Bol built the first Little Free Library as a gift to his mother, a devoted reader. When he saw the people of his community gathering around it, exchanging conversations as well as books, he knew he wanted to take his simple idea further. "I think Little Free Libraries open the door to conversations we want to have with each other." Bol said.

Since then, his idea has become a movement, spreading from state to state and country to country. According to Little Free Library. org, there are now 18,000 of the little structures around the world, located in each of the 50 US states and 70 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia.

The Internet has helped to spread Little Free Libraries. But an Atlantic article says the little structures serve as a cure for a world of e-reader downloads. The little wooden boxes are refreshingly physical and human. For many people, the sense of discovery is Little Free Libraries' main appeal: "A girl walking home from school might pick up a graphic novel that gets her excited about reading; a man on his way to the bus stop might find a volume of poetry that changes his: outlook on life," says the Atlantic article. "Every book is a potential source of inspiration."

1How do Little Free Libraries get their books?

A.Tod Bol donated them. B.Citizens shared them.

C.US government provided them. D.The communities bought them

2Why did Tod Bol want to build more Little Free Libraries?

A.He wanted to promote his idea worldwide.

B.He was inspired by the sharing economy.

C.They can offer neighbors more chances to talk.

D.They are a' gift to please his mother.

3According to the Atlantic article, Little Free Libraries   .

A.benefit the spread of the Internet B.help cut down on e-reading

C.promote (encourage) e-reader downloads D.call on human to care about each other

4Little Free Libraries attract readers most in that   .

C.they are in various shapes and sizes D.they may give readers a sense of discovery

  • 27、Kemira had just jumped in the shower when she heard her mother,Tammy, yelling. Kemira’s 12-day-old daughter was choking. Having fed baby Ryleigh just 30 minutes earlier, the 24-year-old new mother burst out of the bathroom and began patting (轻拍) her daughter on the back, but the baby didn’t make a sound. Kemira knew they needed to get to the hospital fast.

They had barely made it out of their neighborhood when the flashing lights of a police car appeared behind them. Officer Will Kimbro stopped the speeding driver. Tammy pulled over and jumped out of the car, crying that her granddaughter had stopped breathing. Desperate for help, Kemira handed her daughter to Kimbro. He found her heart was barely beating, and called an ambulance---it would take seven minutes, and the hospital was even further away. That was seven minutes Ryleigh didn’t have, because her lips had already become blue.

The fact that Kimbro was there was something of a miracle. He is a school police officer who usually spends his days patrolling (巡逻) the middle school ten miles away. But he travels further when school is out in the summer. Even luckier: He had recently completed a first-aid class.

Officer Kimbro gave the baby to Kemira to hold. He checked Ryleigh’s pulse and then began tapping and pressing her chest. Thanks to the class, Kimbro knew the choking baby didn’t have a chance if there was a blockage (堵塞物), and he used one finger to clear her throat. Twenty seconds later, Ryleigh began to cry. “If she’s crying like that, she’s breathing,” said Kimbro. Before the ambulance arrived, Kimbro continued giving first aid. The whole time he was thinking, “Don’t let this baby die in front of her mother and grandmother.”

At the hospital, Ryleigh recovered quickly, and she was brought back to life thanks to a determined school police officer who was in the right place at the right time.

【1】Why did Kimbro stop the car?

A.Kemira signaled to him for help.

B.Tammy drove faster than the legal limit.

C.There was a traffic jam in the neighborhood.

D.The baby had to be taken to hospital at once.

【2】What was Kemira’s reaction after being stopped?

A.She was too angry to explain herself.

B.She tried to do all she could to save her baby.

C.She got mad at Kimbro and gave up hope.

D.She lost her mind and didn’t know what to do.

【3】Kimbro felt sure that his aid worked when   ________.

A.he noticed Ryleigh’s lips were blue

    B.he checked Ryleigh’s pulse

    C.he pressed Ryleigh’s chest

【4】Which of the following words can best describe Kimbro?

    A.Warm and lucky.

    B.Brave and generous.

    C.Kind and responsible.

    D.Intelligent and skillful.

  • 28、   Supermarket shelves are filled with plant-based alternatives (可代替品) to cow milk, including soy, nut, and coconut milk. These products are popular with consumers who cannot drink cows’ milk for health reasons, as well as with those concerned about animal welfare and environmental sustainability. While the dairy-free (非乳制的) options work well with cereal or in coffee, they fail miserably when it comes to making milk-based products like cheese or yogurt. However, these shortcomings may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a new company in California, which has figured out how to create animal-free milk in a laboratory!

Perumal Gandhi and Ryan Pandya founded the company in 2014 after becoming increasingly annoyed with the lack of cows’ milk-free alternatives, particularly for cheese. For Gandhi, who stopped consuming animal products five years earlier due to environmental and animal welfare concerns, the motivation to create a better alternative stemmed from his love of cheesy pizza. Pandya was spurred (被激发) to take action after being forced to eat some “really bad” dairy-free cream cheese on his sandwich.

The two MIT biomedical engineering scientists decided to join forces to create a more realistic alternative to dairy-based products. In their university lab, the pair spent nine months first isolating (分离) cow DNA then inserting it into yeast (酵母). This genetic modification (改造) enabled the yeast to produce the necessary milk proteins. The final step of the process involved mixing the proteins with some plant nutrients and fats.

The dairy-free milk not only tastes like the real thing but is also healthier, has a longer shelf  life and, most important of all, is Earth friendly. According to the company’s website, when compared to conventional (常规的) milk production, their process uses 65% less energy, creates 84% less greenhouse gas emissions (排放) and requires 91% less land and an amazing 98% less water! Best of all, since it contains real milk proteins, the product behaves like the cow-produced version, which means vegetarian (素食的) consumers will no longer have to deal with the unpleasant cheese on their sandwiches and pizzas.

The company plans to bring their creation to market later this year and their first product will most likely be cheese since there are already many good cows’ milk products available to consumers.

1The underlined word “those” in paragraph 1 refers to _______.

    A.actions B.products C.people D.reasons

2The company’s founders were motivated to make the new product because of _______.

A.their deep concern for the environment

B.their worry that farm animals were poorly treated

    C.the over-consumption of the dairy-based products

D.the poor taste of dairy-free cheese presently available

3What can be inferred from paragraph 4?

A.The dairy-free products cannot be stored for a long time.

B.Cow farming causes considerable environmental damage.

C.The new products will taste better than dairy-based ones.

D.The dairy-free milk will be more expensive than cow’s milk.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Healthier Cheese

    B.New Milk Saves Planet

    C.Making Milk without Cows

    D.Fresher Milk, Better Future

  • 29、Challenging work that requires lots of analytical thinking, planning and other managerial skills might help your brain stay sharp as you age, a study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology suggests.

Researchers from the University of Leipzig in Germany gathered more than 1, 000 retired workers who were over age 75 and assessed the volunteers’ memory and thinking skills through a battery of tests. Then, for eight years, the scientists asked the same group to come back to the lab every 18 months to take the same sorts of tests.

Those who had held mentally stimulating(刺激), demanding jobs before retirement tended to do the best on the tests. And they tended to lose cognitive(认知) function at a much slower rate than those with the least mentally challenging jobs. The results held true even after the scientists accounted for the participants’ overall health status.

“This works just like physical exercise, ” says Francisca Then, who led the study. “After a long run, you may feel like you’re in pain, you may feel tired. But it makes you fit. After a long day at work-sure, you will feel tired, but it can help your brain stay healthy. ”

It's not just corporate jobs, or even paid work that can help keep your brain fit, Then points out. A waiter’s job, for example, that requires multitasking, teamwork and decision-making could be just as stimulating as any high-level office work. And “running a family household requires high-level planning and coordinating(协调), ” she says. “You have to organize the activities of the children and take care of the bills and groceries. ”

Of course, our brains can decline as we grow older for lots of reasons-including other environmental influences or genetic factors. Still, continuing to challenge yourself mentally and keeping your mind busy can only help.

【1】Why did the scientists ask the volunteers to take the tests?

    A.To assess their health status.

    B.To evaluate their work habits.

    C.To analyze their personality.

    D.To measure their mental ability.

【2】How does Francisca Then explain her findings in paragraph 4?

    A.By using an expert’s words.

    B.By making a comparison.

    C.By referring to another study.

    D.By introducing a concept.

【3】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Retired Workers Can Pick Up New Skills

B.Old People Should Take Challenging Jobs

C.Your Tough Job Might Help Keep You Sharp

D.Cognitive Function May Decline As You Age

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的概要。

    Take notes, not notepads

If you were allowed to bring a laptop to class, would you prefer to take notes by typing or with a pen and paper? Most people would probably prefer a laptop. And the reason is obvious: they can write much more quickly using a keyboard and therefore take down more information.

But the truth is that faster isn’t always better. A new study, done by Princeton University and University of California, found that students who took handwritten notes actually learned more than those who used laptops, reported The Atlantic. In the study, 65 college students watch a video of a lecture and take notes either with pens or laptops. Students were then asked to complete different tests based on how well they remembered and understood the lecture. Results show that pen users performed better than those who took notes with their laptops.

Curious about the results they compared the notes of the two groups and immediately saw the difference-pen users’ notes were shorter and taken mostly in their own words. Laptop users, however usually type down word by word what the lecture said in a “mindless” way. They found that students with laptops always try to take more notes, so they usually write down information without processing is meaning while pen users know that they cannot possibly record every word in a lecture. Instead, they listen, think and focus on understanding the content of the lecture. Besides brain activities, there is another reason that laptops are not so useful in class. According to Scientific American, when college students use laptops in class, they spend on average 40 percent of class time doing things such as visiting social media sites or shopping, which obviously harms their school performance.

Indeed. Technology is making our lives easier and doing things more efficiently. But learning may not be one of those things. As scientific American put it: “When it comes to taking notes, students need fewer gigs (电脑性能) and more brain power.”
