27、Anita's New Start
Even though it was a beautiful spring day, Anita felt sad as she walked along the beach after school. Her family had moved to the USA three weeks earlier for her father's new job. Anita missed her old home in Mexico. She wanted to eat her grandmother's bread and play with her cousin.
Anita thought about her new life in Texas. She thought she would never learn this new language - everyone spoke so fast. How could she make new friends if she couldn't even talk to people? "I'm too shy to make new friends anyway," she thought, feeling disheartened. Anita decided to try something her mother had taught her. Her mother had said, "Anita, whenever you're sad, take a few deep breaths and think about something that makes you happy." Then Anita took a deep breath.
Suddenly a seagull (海鸥) called overhead. She remembered that she had saved some biscuits from lunch. She quickly threw a biscuit into the air. As the gull caught the biscuit in its mouth, she laughed. Just then, another gull landed near her and stood frozen. Anita noticed its wing was injured. She wanted to help, but didn't know what to do.
At that moment Anita saw a man and a group of children in the distance. She recognized the man as Mr. Turner, a teacher at her school. He was pointing to something and all the children in the science club were listening to him. Anita decided that there was no time to be shy. She began walking toward the group. Anita took a deep breath. "Hello," she said quietly. When Mr. Turner looked up, she pointed toward the gull and begged, "Come, please! Hello, Anita. What's wrong?" Anita pointed again toward the bird. Mr. Turner gestured to the group. "Come on, everyone. Let's see what Anita has found." As the group followed Anita, she noticed a girl from her class. Anita smiled at the girl and spoke carefully, "What is your name?"

28、 Look out of the window of your workplace. Is the view pleasing? Can you see trees and grassy areas, or rubbish bins? Do you enjoy leaving the building at lunchtime or would you rather stay in your office?
Indoor work environments (in particular factors like light, noise and temperature) have an effect on working quality. Attractive offices, with common areas and relaxing activities, will appeal to businesses and workers. If a positive office indoor environment helps, it makes sense that a nice outdoor one should do the job, too.
Those who work in a big city are complaining about crowded conditions, surrounded by busy roads. But there are exceptions. Chiswick Park in west London is the kind of area that local people like to frequent on their days off. It has its own waterfall and lake, where ducks have settled, and there are tree-shaded lawns where one can picnic on sunny summer days. The actively minded can head for a special area to play basketball or football. The autumn brings firework shows and when the weather is good, the site holds food fairs, concerts or other events.
During the week, however, 9,000 people flood into the park’s 12 office buildings. They are home to 73 businesses, including big companies like Paramount and Sony.
Anyone who has visited the main office of a tech company will be surprised to find comfortable chairs, pool tables and even guitars or bikes for hire, like those in a big hotel. The worry about such services is that they aim to keep employees in the office for as long as possible. If you can eat, go to the gym and even get your dry cleaning done at work, why go home?
The danger, as with many aspects of the future economy, is of another class divide. In addition to fat pay checks, well-decorated offices with top-class services located in attractive parks for the fortunate few who program for big tech groups or run large companies; dissatisfying jobs in “satisfying centers” and busy roads outside for the rest. On the bright side, office workers in the latter will at least still have a reason to head home.

29、Jose Adolfo is a banker from Peru. He encourages children to save money and offers his customers cash for recycling plastic wastes. But the remarkable thing is that he is still a child himself.
By the age of 7, he decided to create a bank for children. He was motivated by seeing his classmates skipping lunch because they had spent the little money they had on sweets or football cards. What drove him even more was the poverty he saw among children.
With the support of a local company, the 14-year-old founded the Bartselana student bank which now has more than 2,000 customers between the ages of 10 and 18. Children can withdraw (提取) money from several cashpoints of the bank. They can also monitor their balances online. What makes it different from traditional banks is that it sets savings goals for children. They have to reach those goals in order to withdraw their money.
The student bank really took off when he came up with the “Recycle Plan”, a new way for the children to earn money by collecting recyclable plastic or paper waste. Students can bring recyclable plastic bottles, used school books and old newspapers to the schools and put them into the collecting boxes. The recycling is weighed and the money goes to their bank accounts.
The bank recycles 4.4 tons of material a month and has collecting boxes in seven schools in Arequipa. More are on a waiting list. Increasingly the model is in demand in the rest of Peru and abroad.
His efforts have been noticed by Peru’s environment ministry. “He’s making an amazing change in financial (理财的) education that perhaps many adults could not come up with,” said the Peru’s environment minister, Lucia Ruiz. “He’s achieving a double goal because he’s not just designing a financial opportunity for children and teenagers but also helping to reduce waste in the country.”

Even though the Normans spoke French for the e【8】 250 years they ruled England, French did not replace English 【9】 the first language.
