  • 27、No trip to the beach would be complete without a group of hungry gulls. But be careful, because one of those gulls may soon go after your food. “There's a very small number of very daring individuals that seem to harm the reputation of the whole species.”

Neeltje Boogert, an animal behavior researcher at the University of Exeter, studied the food-snatching habits of gulls in seaside towns in the southern U.K. and found that very few-only the bravest, would actually take the food or make that the bite.

The experiment went like this: A researcher crouched near a gull, then set out a plastic bag of French fries. For those brave gulls that then started to approach, the researcher either stared straight at the gull, as in “I see you, thief,” or simply looked away. And it turned out, staring down at the gulls made them hesitate 21 seconds on average before approaching the fries.

Gulls aren't the only ones who behave better when being watched. A 2006 study found that people paid three times as much for their drinks at an unattended honor-system coffee bar when just an image of staring eyes was displayed nearby.

As for the gulls, Boogert points out that we need to learn to live with them—because the particular species she studied is on the U.K.'s Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern.

“The thing is: people don't want to have a seaside holiday without gulls there. So it's just trying to find ways to live together with one of the only wildlife species we still have around in these coastal areas.”

“So don't turn your back on the gulls,” she says. “Both seemingly for conserving the species and, of course, actually—for conserving your lunch.”

  • 28、Ocean food plays a very important part in our food supply. Not so long ago, the world’s oceans were filled with different types of fish. Now, a large increase in global overfishing has threatened that supply.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, 90 percent of the world’s fisheries (渔场) are either being fully exploited (开发), or are at risk of being closed down.

With fish supplies running out at home, fishermen are traveling further to find their catch. Frequently, fishermen are crossing over into other countries. As fish supplies closer to their homeland’s shores are decreasing fishermen cross borders to find fish.

Overfishing can be found everywhere, from Mexican fishing boats off the US coast of Florida to Russian fishing boats in the western Bering Sea. However, the effect is felt the strongest in the South China Sea.

On the other side of the world, West Africa is now seeing malign effects of overfishing. For coastal African countries, such as Senegal, the fishing industry is a large part of the national economy. The World Bank reports nearly 20 percent of the Senegalese are working in the fishing industry. Rashid Sumaila is the Director of Fisheries Economic Research at the University of British Columbia. He says communities that depend on fish for income and food, like Senegal, are now at risk.

【1】Why do fishermen cross borders to catch fish?

A.Because they want to protect the environment.

B.Because they want to enjoy the overseas scenery.

C.Because fish supplies in their countries are decreasing.

D.Because fishing is not allowed in their own countries.

【2】Where can the most serious overfishing be seen according to the text?

    A.In Russia.

    B.In the South China Sea.

C.Off the US coast of Florida.

    D.In the western Bering Sea.

【3】What does the underlined word “malign” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Harmful.

    B.Satisfying.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Beneficial.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Most people in Africa will be out of work.

B.The World Bank will lend money to fishermen.

C.Rashid Sumaila is unconcerned about overfishing.

D.Overfishing has some bad effects on African people.

  • 29、   Hattie Wyatt was an American politician who became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate(参议院).

She grew up in her native Bakerville, Tennessee, and in nearby Hustburg. She graduated(1896)from Dickson Normal School and for time thereafter(从那以后)taught school. In 1902 she married Thaddeus H. Caraway, who subsequently became a congressman and then a U.S. senator for Arkansas.

When Thaddeus died in November 1931, Hattie Caraway was appointed by the governor to fill her husband's seat until a special election could be held; she thus became the second woman(after Rebecca Felton, 1922)to be seated in the U.S. Senate. She won a special election to fill the few remaining months of her late husband's term. She won reelection in her own right to the seat later with the help of Louisiana governor Huey Long, who campaigned for her. MeClellan firmly established her as a senator in her own right, and her dry humor and homely sayings made her a favorite national figure.

  • 31、

The meaning of silence varies among cultural group. Silence may be 1, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every 2 with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of 3 among people, just at some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore when a person from one of these culture is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be 4 is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these culture, silence is a call for 5.

Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with 6 among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show 7between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority(权威)rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.

Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the 8 meanings of silence wen they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own persona and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not 9 too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing 10 of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
