  • 26、   World-famous violinist Itzhak Perlman was stricken with polio(小儿麻痹) as a child. As a result, he wears races(轮槽) on both legs and walks with the aid of crutches. At concerts, getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He slowly crosses the stage until he reaches his chair. He lays his crutches on the floor, slowly undoes the clasps(扣环)on his legs, puts one foot backward and extends the other one forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor, and starts to play.

One fall evening in 1995, while performing at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City, Perlman had to deal with one additional trouble. Jack Reimer, a famous reporter with the Houston Chronicle, described the scene. “Just as he finished the first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear the sound go off like gunfire across the room. There was no mistaking what that sound meant.”

There was no mistaking what he had to do. People who were there said, “We figured he would have to get up...to either find another violin or find another string for this one.”

But he didn’t. Instead he waited a moment, closed his eyes, and then signaled the conductor to begin again .The band and he played from where he had left off. He played with enthusiasm and power.

Of course, it is important to play a symphonic work with just three strings. But that night Itzhak Perlman refused to know that. You could see him modulate(调音), change, recompose the piece in his head. At one point, it sounded like he was turning the strings to get new sounds they had never made before.

1What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?

A.It’s a piece of cake for Perlman to perform on the stage.

B.It’s not easy for Perlman to get on the stage.

C.Perlman has achieved great success on the stage.

D.Perlman has small achievements on the stage.

    2How did the string break?

A.It only broke by accident. B.Perlman broke the string because he was too excited.

C.A gunfire from somewhere in the room broke it. D.It was broken by the few bars.

3It can be inferred from the last paragraph that Perlman_______.

A.pretended not to know that the string was broken. B.thought nothing was impossible

C.was a very proud man D.showed his self-confidence in time of trouble

  • 28、   I was driving my newly acquired motorcycle across the vastness of North Dakota when all of the sudden it froze up on the road. I would later be told the belt had slipped and this caused one of the pistons(活塞) to crack a cylinder (气缸) head, or something like that.

Anyway, I sat on the side of the road for what seemed like hours. I even pretended to have been in an accident, which didn't help. Finally, a young man pulled over and offered me a ride, but given that he already had two motorcycles in the back of his truck, he could only take me.

He drove me to the next town, where I asked to be dropped off. Rather than drop me off, he waited while I asked around if anyone could help me to pick up my motorcycle. One elderly gentleman was working and said that I could use his pickup! Can you imagine that a stranger gave me the keys to his pickup. It was quite an experience, I must say. So, as I drove back 20 miles to get my motorcycle, the gentleman who first stopped to help me followed me. We both put the motorcycle in the back of the truck, and then I followed him another 50 miles or so and we both unloaded the motorcycle at his place. Then, he followed me back to the small town so I could return the man's truck. I didn't have much cash on me, maybe $40, but I gave it to the man for the use of his truck.

  • 29、   Maps helped people discover new land and allow us to navigate our day-to-day life This series will show us some of the most interesting maps on the Internet.

    Tree Density(密度)per Country

Meanwhile, countries that traded with China through means of the sea, call it "te"! The only country in the Western hemisphere(半球)that doesn't use tea is Brazil.

    Global Railway Network Density

Speaking of Europe and its past, check out how much more dense their railway networks are, compared to other parts of the world! Australia and North America, which were both colonized(殖民)more recently and have a lower population density, have fewer railway systems.

    Money Color Around the World

You know what doesn't grow on tee Money. Despite that being true, many countries still color their bills green. The reason for this is actually because this color was highly resistant(有抵抗力的)to chemical and physical changes. This map shows you the main color on $20 note is the same across the world.

A.Larger countries with a larger population tend to have more trees.

    The Floating School

Life on the islands can feel a bit isolated due to a lack of electricity and internet connectivity.

Although some of the islands have primary schools, most young people must travel to the larger islands or to the mainland to attend high school. Schools on the islands follow the 1 curriculum (课程). They don't teach subjects such as maritime skills, swimming or local fishing traditions, and so the curriculum isn't always 2 with students' everyday life.

So, we 3 the Floating School after winning funding through a US State Department grant competition called Seeds for the Future. Before we started the school, we spoke with young people, community leaders and teachers on the islands to find out the topics young people are most interested in. We also learned about the various 4 of students and young people who don't go to school. Thus, we 5 our own non-formal educational programme that fits with the context of life on the islands. For example, those working in fishing have responsibility 6 the marine life, so we teach environmental protection and discourage destructive fishing practices.

The Floating School is a wooden boat that can 7 up to twenty people and it goes to the students, not the other way around -- we use it to transport educational materials, tools, and teachers to young people living on the islands. Our teachers are local young 8— so far we have had journalists, photographers, computer engineers and musicians — and students who want to 9 their skills.

At first, many of the young people thought the Floating School would be the same as their schools on the islands. They had thought of the teachers to be 10. But our students learn through art, media and literature. They don't have to wear uniforms or shoes, and the teachers treat the students as equals, without judging them. This means our students can be themselves.

This is an unbelievable real Christmas story: one of courage, life and passing on love.

Twenty-five years ago, Ray Anderson, a single parent with a one-year-old son, was returning home after giving out gifts to the needy people on Christmas Eve when he witnessed a terrible accident which took place when the driver of a truck ran a red light and collided (碰撞)with the car of Sandra Jenkins. The influence of the collision killed Sandra instantly, but her three-month-old daughter was left trapped upside down in the burning car seemingly doomed to a fiery tomb.

While others looked on in horror, Anderson jumped out of his car and crawled (爬)into the car through the broken window to try to free the baby. Seconds later, the car was totally on fire, but Anderson was unexpectedly able to pull the baby to safety. While the child came out of the accident with no injuries, Anderson suffered third degree burns over 80 percent of his body.

Two days later, Anderson died, but his heroic act was published widely in the media. Anderson’s son was soon raised by relative, and the family moved to the East Coast.

The most unbelievable part of this story unfolded only last week. Karen and her fiance(未婚夫), Aaron, were looking through some old boxes in the basement of Karen’s home when they came across some old newspapers. “This is me when I was a newborn baby. My mother was busy with some volunteer work when the accidnet happened. I was rescued from a burning car, but my mother died in the accident,” explained Karen. Although Aaron knew Karen’s mother had died years earlier, he never fully understood the situation until he started to skim over the newspaper article. Karen continued to sort through some old books when saw Aaron absorbed in the details of the accident.
