Some people claim they “never forget a face”. But what does that saying mean? Is there really no limit to the number of faces a person can remember? A new study at the University of York in England has found that, on average, people can remember as many as 5,000 faces.
The study is the first time that scientists have been able to put a number to the abilities of humans to recognize faces. The research team tested people on how many faces they could remember from their personal lives and in the media. They also tested them to see how many famous faces they recognized. Rob Jenkins works in the psychology department at the University of York. He said the researchers’ study centered on the number of faces people actually know. He said the researchers were not able to discover whether there is a limit on how many faces the brain can handle.
In the study, people spent one hour writing down as many faces from their personal lives as possible. At first, they found it easy to come up with many faces. But by the end of the hour, they found it harder to think of new ones. Their change in speed let the researchers estimate when they would have run out of faces completely.
The results showed that these people knew between 1,000 and 10,000 faces. Jenkins explained that some people may have a natural ability for remembering faces. “There are differences in how much attention people pay to faces and how well they process the information,” he said. Jenkins also said it could be because of different social environments. Some people may have grown up in more populated places. Therefore, they may have had more social contact throughout their lives.
The people in the study included 25 men and women between 18 and 61 years old. Researchers think age may be an interesting area for further research. “It would be interesting to see whether there is a peak age for the number of faces we know”, Jenkins said. He said it is possible that we gather more faces throughout our lifetime. But, he added, there also may he an age at which we start to find it harder to remember all of those faces.
The study suggests our facial recognition abilities enable us to deal with the many different faces we see on the screens, as well as those we know, like family and friends. Today, facial recognition technology is used in many ways, including by law enforcement agencies to prevent crime and violence. Governments use it to keep secret areas secure and, in extreme cases, control populations. Even Facebook uses facial recognition. For example, when you “tag” or name a friend, Facebook technology may recognize the person’s face from a different picture you had shared before.

26、 My 10-year-old granddaughter was happy the day before yesterday because her mother took her and her friend to a park to celebrate Children’s Day. For a whole day, the two girls played heartily---no homework, no extra-curricular (课外) skills training. The happy life lasted only for one day. Yesterday, everything returned to normal: doing homework till late at night and going over lessons learned at last weekend’s English and “Olympic maths” courses.
Every time I went to my daughter’s house in the evening, I saw her sitting by the small desk in the room doing her homework. On the wall behind the desk are some words she wrote. One sentence reads: “Why is the exercise endless?” Poor girl!
Although teachers have stopped giving after-school homework to primary school children, parents have been forcing their kids to attend different courses-learning English, painting, “Olympic maths” and so on, every Saturday and Sunday.
Are these extra-curricular courses really necessary in children’s education? The answer is certainly “No”. Take the so-called “Olympic maths” for example. These courses are very difficult for the children to understand. Often, they are difficult even for adults.

27、Maybe it is true that we do not know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also true that we do not know what we have been missing until it arrives. Giving someone all your love never means that they will love you back. Do not expect love in return; but if it does not, be glad it grows in yours.
It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Do not depend on one's appearance, it may not be true. Do not depend on wealth, even that disappears slowly. Depend on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.
There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug(拥抱) them.
Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials(尝试) to make you strong, enough sadness to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.
Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too.
The happiest people do not necessarily give the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who cry, those who have been hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tired, for only they can enjoy the importance of people who have touched their lives.
The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.
【1】If you put yourself in another's position, ___________.
A. you should depend on wealth
B. you shouldn't do those things that will hurt you and other people
C. you will do what you want to do however dangerous it is to people
D. you should depend on other people.
【2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. If you give someone your love, you are sure that she will give her love to you in return.
B. We often don’t know what we have lost until it happens.
C. If someone accepts your love and he doesn’t give you his love in return, you should be angry with him.
D. If it takes you an hour to love someone, you will easily forget her.
【3】In the last paragraph of the passage, the writer is actually telling us that a man in the world should be one who __________.
A. can accept the suggestions made by others
B. can live happily and forget the past
C. does good to the people and wins their respect
D. has made a lot of money for himself when he dies

Some animals live in very terrible conditions. Hundreds of chickens stay in a cage, pigs have to live in spaces that are not big enough for them 【3】(turn) around in, and cows are kept in darkened places for the whole of their 【4】(natural) lives. Now more and more people are worried about the conditions of livestock(家畜)animals.
Jamie Oliver, a British chef, 【5】(take) part in a project focusing on pigs. The Sate Our Bacon Campaign showed the public what pig farming is like. He also questioned the actual quality of the meat from these farms.
